Sri Vishnu Bhujanga Prayatha Sthothram by Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics and meanings

I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Vishnu who is the personification of wisdom, he is pure and unblemished, he has no desire or attachments, he has no specific form, and he is the symbol of Om’, he is beyond Thrigunas, he is not perceivable and he is Parambhrama.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Vishnu who is pure and auspicious, he is serene, he has no beginning or end, he is the cause of the Universe and its living beings, he has supreme brilliance and he represents eternal bliss, he is not bound by space or time, he is the essence of Veda.  He is unharmed by heat or cold, he is ever pleasing and symbol of eternal happiness.  He has attractive nose, eyebrows, forehead, etc.. He is decked in magnificent crown on his beautiful curly hair locks, his eyes has the resemblance to lotus flower petals.  He is decked in attractive long ear ornament that constantly touches the neck, he has beautiful smile on crimson colored lips, he is decorated with the garlands made of Mandara which is packed with honey bees, he is decked in precious gem garland Kousthubham.  He is decorated with gem studded armlets and bangles on his powerful arms, he is attired in majestic yellow garments, his lotus feet extends brilliance superior to lotus flower.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Vishnu who is sincerely meditated by ascetics and virtuous with severe austerities and envision the magnificent form of Lord Vishnu that was mentioned above, ultimately they cross the ocean of Samsara at ease and attain the supreme abode of Lord Vishnu.  I shall prostrate before Lord Vishnu along with Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi who has the complexion of precious yellow metal, and Goddess Sri Bhoodevi who has the luster of Dhurvadhala and dark complexioned, he is the flawless Gruhastha of the three worlds.  Oh! Lord, I shall completely surrender at your lotus feet, I have abandoned the sense of ‘I’/body, wife, children, relatives, wealth, possessions, and properties that caused extreme distress.  Oh! Deva, I am worn out with the troubles of aging that chasing me like an evil spirit, ultimately that destroys blood, bone and flesh in the body.  Oh! Compassionate Lord, kindly protects us.  Oh! Prabho, I have completely besieged at the thought of troubles in death bed, I am distressed at the thought of intense pain and difficulty in breathing at the death bed, I shall earnestly pray to protect us. Oh! Deva, I am constantly remembering and reciting your glorious names as Achyutha, Anantha, Govinda, Vishnu, Murare, Hare, Rama, Narayana etc.. Oh! Compassionate Lord, Kindly protects us.  Oh! Kripalo/compassionate, Oh! Hare, Oh! Keshava, Oh! Sheshahetho, Oh! Jagannatha, Oh! Narayana, Oh! Anantha, Oh! Vishno, I shall repeatedly reciting your names, kindly provide us sincere devotion at your lotus feet.  Oh! Vishnu, Oh! Vasudeva/unconquerable, Oh! Narasimha/half man and half lion, Oh! Kalaroopa/incarnation of Lord Vishnu at the time of deluge, Oh! Samharakarthre, Oh! Varaha, Oh! Jagannatha/Lord of the Universe, Oh! Vishno, Oh! Gadha Chakrapane/wielded in mace and wheel, Oh! Prapannarthihara /who destroys the grief and sorrows of his devotees, Oh! Akilesha/Lord of the Universe,  I shall prostrate before you, kindly protect us.  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishnu/Lord Padmanabha, who has beautiful smile and his nails has the luster of moon, he is wielded in divine wheel, he is worshiped by Lord Indhra and deities, he is reclining in the serpent bed Anantha, I am not aware of any deities other than you. Whoever reads or listen to the glorious verses of Bhujanga Prayatha Sthothram with utmost faith and devotion, and meditates upon supreme Lord Murari, would be freed from worldly attachments and rewarded with supreme Yogic practices, eventually attain an indestructible place in the abode of Lord Vishnu.
