Sri Garuda Ashtoththarashathanama Sthothram – Sri Bhramandapuranam - Lyrics and meanings

Devi speaks “ Oh! Devadeva who is Lord of Lords, Oh! Mahadeva, who is mighty Lord, Oh! Sarvajja who is omniscient, Oh! Karunanidhe who is extremely compassionate, I would like to listen the hundred and eight sacred names of Tharkshya/King of birds/Garuda.”


Eshvara speaks “ Oh! Devi, kindly listens to me carefully, I shall narrate the glorious hundred and eight names of Garuda who is magnanimous, these hundred and eight names praising the splendor of Garuda are highly propitious and capable to eradicate severest sins of the worshiper.”


Eshvara continues “ Sri Garuda Ashtoththarashathanama sthothra is highly propitious hymn was composed by Rishi Bhrama, it has Anushtup as chandhass, presiding deity is Garuda, Pranava as Beejam, Vidhya as Shakthi, Veda as Keelakam, it is recited to please Pakshiraja/King of birds Garuda.”


 I shall meditate upon Pakshiraja/King of birds who eradicates all the toxic poisons, he holds Amrithakalasham/pot of nectar of immortality, he has great radiance, he is worshiped by  wise, and learned, he is incomprehensible even for Veda and Shasthras, he has marvelous wings which as the appearance of precious yellow metal, he has the resemblance to fire ball. I shall meditate upon Vainatheya who is son of  Devi Vinatha, he is Gagapathi who explores through the sky, he was born to Sage Kashyapa and  Devi Vinatha, he resembles to fire ball, he is extremely valorous, he has the luster of molten yellow metal, he has beautiful wings, he is celestial vehicle of Lord Hari, he has beautiful appearance, he has great effulgence, he is highly enthusiastic and  powerful, he is Bhramam, he is passionate devotee of Lord Vishnu, he has the luster of  Kundhapushpa and moon, he represents Chakrapani, he is Sreeman who is enemy of Naga/serpent, he is adorned in Naga, he symbolizes supreme wisdom and intellect, peculiar, knowledge and void of impurities, he is the source of happiness and wealth, he is the protector of Universe, he dwells on the Earth, he is beloved of passionate devotees, he has pleasing disposition, he has embodied as celestial vehicle King of birds, he is worshiped by Suras and Asuras as well, he lives in the mound and marsh lands, he is the destroyer of Dhaithyas, he is brother to Aruna, he symbolizes moon, he is immortal, he symbolizes supreme bliss, he is imperishable, he is the essence of Veda, he abstain from food, he represents Sathvik, Rajasik and Thamasik nature, he is beyond comparison, he is Paramjyothiswaroopa, he is Parathpara who is beyond human intellect, he has divine limbs, he is the source of auspiciousness, he is valorous, he has subtle as well as  colossal form , he is enemy of poison-mouthed, he represents learned, wise,  and scholarly, he is perceivable, he is the source of success in endeavors,  he has powerful limbs, he is Jagadheesha, he is  majestic celestial vehicle of Janardhana, he eradicates miseries and sorrows, he is void of Jara and Marana, he is the source of all kinds of auspiciousness, happiness, prosperity and wealth, he has the luster of moon, he is Bhramam/represents Pithru, he remains in the association of Suras, he represents Yajjya and worshiped with fire sacrifices, he has great speed, he is unconquerable, he is celestial vehicle of Lord Vihnu, he is closest companion of Manmatha, he holds Shankha and Chakra, he has immense strength, and extremely valorous,  he holds  vessel of nectar, he has pleasant disposition, he can be formidable to wicked, he is the destroyer of wicked enemies, his limbs resembles to Vajra, he is most promising,  and venerable, he has the speed of wind, he showers abundance of boon on worshiper, he is the delight of Devi Vinatha, he symbolizes wealth and happiness, he is surrounded by the crowd of victorious people, he is Sarvesha who eradicates all the sins of the worshiper, he symbolizes flame, he is surrounded by successful people who produces the sounds of victory, he is the source of delight to Universe, he has powerful nose resembles to Vajra, he has marvelous face, he eradicates epidemic, he crush the pride, arrogance, haughtiness etc.. he symbolizes time, he is beloved of Goddess Kamala, he eradicates evil effects of Kali era, he has the brilliance of lightning, he has marvelous limbs, he protected Devi Vinatha from the slavery of Kadhru, he symbolizes fire sacrifices, Veda, wealth, Gayathri metre,  and Samagana, he is adorned in flower garlands, he has the speed of wind, he moves independently according to his will.  These are the glorious and highly confidential verses praising the splendor of Garuda who is magnanimous, these are most propitious hymns capable to eradicate all the sins of worshiper, and has the purifying effect, this highly auspicious hymn should be  recited along with the worship of Lord Vishnu.”

Sage Agasthya speaks “ The above are the marvelous composition of Dharmaraja, these are the sacred names which removes all the impurities and seeds of impurities, therefore the nectar like sacred verses praising the splendor of   supreme Lord Hari who is adorned in precious gem  Kausthubha and Lord Hara who is adorned in crescent moon on matted hair locks, should be recited always.”

I shall prostrate before Universal preceptor Sri Shankaracharya who is the source of supreme bliss, he imparts the knowledge of Bhramam,  he removes darkness of ignorance and illuminates the soul like Adithya, he symbolizes supreme wisdom and knowledge, he represents full moon which  is the source of nectar like supreme intellect, he established Varnna/Bhramana, Kshathriya, Vaishya and Shudhra,  and Ashrama Dharma /Bhramacharya, Grihasthashrama, Sanyasahrama and Vanaprastha respectively, he is highly admirable, he is the source of liberation from repeated births, he always immerses in  unfolding the knowledge of  Bhramam  to his disciples, he fulfills all the desires of the worshiper, he symbolizes greatest and highly confidential philosophies, he enlightens the soul with the duties and responsibility,  and describes the distinction between righteous and improper deeds etc.. his hands are in Gnanamudra posture, he eradicates miseries of his disciples, he is intended to be religious mendicant and traveled extensively across the land, he is supreme authority and independent to act according to his will, he is supreme Lord Shankara who personified as highly honorable Acharya and established the Adhvaitha Philosophy, he established six sect of doctrines, he enlightens the soul about the supremacy of Veda and Vedic way of life, he symbolizes Veda, Vedantha, and  greatest philosophies, he strictly  opposed the religion which caused to fall beliefs and principles, he symbolizes abandonment, renunciation from worldly affairs, serenity, he is the safest ferry to cross the unfathomable ocean of worldly existence, he has pleasing disposition and pleasant smile on lotus face, he is the source of knowledge of Paramarththa/knowledge of Bhramam/knowledge of self, he is the essence of  sacred scriptures, Veda,  and Smrithi, he is contented always, he is pure, he is supreme bliss, he is void of sorrows or pains, passion, he is  indifferent, free from worldly desires, moving  independently at his own will, detached, unobstructed, and  impartial,  he is supreme soul, he is unblemished, he is free from  worldly matters, sense of possessiveness and selfishness, he is void of impurities like ego, lust, desire, passion, anger etc.. his lotus feet are most venerable, he is worshiped by the whole Universe, he symbolizes Sathvik nature, and store house of virtues, he is beyond Sankhya philosophies, he is sinless, he represents Universal spirit,  he is wise, pious,eloquent and learned, he imparts the knowledge of Bhramam, he is absolute truth, he symbolizes piousness, Sankhya Yoga/ philosophies, extreme penance and austerities, he has great effulgence, he established the division of properties/ Gunathraya/Sathvik, Rajasik and Thamasic nature, he eradicates the evil effects of Kali era, he represents time and deeds, he eradicates dullness, ignorance and lethargy, he is divine personified, he composed remarkable works of  sacred texts, he is highly intellectual invoked Goddess Sharadha, he evidently described the differenciation between righteousness and immoral deeds to aimless, he represents sounds, bindu, and  art forms, he resides in the heart of Yogis and illuminates like Bhaskara/Sun, he has won over senses, he symbolizes supreme wisdom and knowledge, he represents indispensable as well as ephemeral rite, he is universal spirit who symbolizes supreme bliss and intellect, he has numerous Siddhis/supernatural powers, he is the source of welfare and happiness, he is forbearing, and  pious, he is absolute truth, he symbolizes auspiciousness, he has glorious myths, he is most pleasing to all, he has great effulgence, he illuminates the whole Universe with his radiance and in this way he multiplied welfare and happiness of the Universe, he is illustrious, eminent, and eloquent, he enthusiastically works for the welfare of Universe and its living beings, he conducted expedition to Mounta Kailash and eulogized Lord Chandhramauleeshvara, he pleased the  principal deity Amba/Goddess Kamakshi and  installed Srichakraraja Yanthra in the most sacred land of Kanchi, he composed Bhramasuthra, Bhasya on Upanishadhs, and various sacred texts, he is widely honored as Mahamathi/prudent and highly intelligent to adorn the sacred Sarvajyana Peedam, he established Adhvaitha doctrines/non-dualisam, which conquered the whole world, he is attired in crisp saffron robe,  beautifully smeared in sacred ashes, and holds Kamandalu, and Danda, he symbolizes supreme wisdom, he is Universal preceptor who  is reverentially addressed as Bhagavathpadha, he is absolute Bhramam who expounds knowledge of self, he is prominent among spiritual mendicant, he has composed numerous illustrious hymns and verses like Saundharyalahari praising the splendor of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, he symbolizes 64 art forms, he illustrates the nature of Bhramam to the disciples who yearn for supreme wisdom, his lotus feet are worshiped by  Sri Mandana Mishra , and Thotakacharya, he instructed supreme knowledge of Bhramam to Hasthamalaka, he assigned Sureshvaracharya as chief of  first monastic institution, he perceived the marvelous form of Narasimha, he  worships Lord Heramba, he is Jagathguru who conquered Sarvajjyapeedam, he is supreme preceptor Srimath Shankaracharya who is worshiped in the whole I shall take refugee at the lotus feet of son of Lord Hari and Hara who is divine personified as Hariharathmaja,  he resides in the dense wood packed with wild animals, he is ocean of mercy,  he is beyond human intellect, he has numerous wild animals as attendants, he is splendid, he has great radiance, he represents living as well non- living things and he  is perceivable for all, I shall take refugee at the lotus feet of son of Lord Hari and Hara who is divine personified as Hariharathmaja,  he is wish fulfilling creeper to worshiper, he eradicates miseries and sorrows of the worshiper who are surrendered to his lotus feet, he is supreme preceptor to worshiper who are surrendered at his lotus feet, he is divine personified as son of Hari and Hara, he is the essence of Pranava, he has pleasing disposition, he is most desirable seated on  Dhyanayoga posture,  I shall take refugee at the lotus feet of son of Lord Hari and Hara who is divine personified as Hariharathmaja,  he symbolizes piousness, he has the luster of lotus flower, he holds Shakha, Gadha, Parigham/mace, Mudhgaram, Banam,d Dhanuss, Kshurika/dagger, Thomaram, and shakthi as wepons, I shall take refugee at the lotus feet of son of Lord Hari and Hara who is divine personified as Hariharathmaja,   he is pure, he removes impurities of the worshiper, he illuminates the Universe with his supreme radiance, he is eminent and has numerous Ganas as attendants, he is wielded in powerful bow and arrows to destroy the enemies, he is extremely valorous, his lotus feet are worshiped in the whole Universe, he is worshiped by pious and righteous people, he is the source of delight of pious, he is extremely compassionate to worshiper, I shall take refugee at the lotus feet of son of Lord Hari and Hara who is divine personified as Hariharathmaja,  he is worshiped with sacred chants and recitation of hymns, his lotus feet are safest and elixir of nectar, he is the source of welfare, richness and prosperity, he can be formidable too and seize away all the auspiciousness, he is adorned in various ornaments, I shall take refugee at the lotus feet of son of Lord Hari and Hara who is divine personified as Hariharathmaja,  he is surrounded by wild animals, he is beautifully adorned in sandalwoodpaste on the forehead, he has animals as Ganas, and hunter clan as attendants, he has marvelous form  majestically seated on the leopard, I shall take refugee at the lotus feet of son of Lord Hari and Hara who is divine personified as Hariharathmaja,  he symbolizes supreme preceptor, his eyes are soaked in compassion, he is incomparable, he liberates the soul from repeated births, he is the source of  supreme bliss and self-realization/knowledge of Athman/Knowledge of Bhramam to Puru/men, hence I shall take refugee at the lotus feet of son of Lord Hari and Hara who is divine personified as Hariharathmaja.

I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is the commander of Ganas and son of Esha, he takes immense pleasure in the rattling sounds of the small bells adorned across the body, his marvelous lotus feet are dancing to the tune enthusiastically,  he is Thunthila/Ganesha, who is adorned in venomous serpent as sacred thread across the chest, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is the commander of Ganas and son of Esha, his lotus face takes immense joy in the melodious music from the strings of Veena, he has long trunk and sparkling tusk which is soaked in the nectar like dribble, he is adorned in various fresh alluring flower garlands of rich fragrances, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is the commander of Ganas and son of Esha, he has great splendor resembles to the blood red colors  of  inner part of lotus bud, he has the radiance of sun in the early hours of dawn, he has pot sized belly and broken tusk, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is the commander of Ganas and son of Esha, he is adorned in various gem decorated ornaments, he is adorned in marvelous crown, he is adorned in crescent moon on the magnificent crown, he is Vibhu who is adorned in exquisite ornaments all over the body, he is the destroyer of miseries and sorrows of worldly existence, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is the commander of Ganas and son of Esha, his beautiful arms has the resemblance to  creeper, his eye brows are moving to and fro diligently, he is served by the female celstial of Maruthganas with the Chamaram, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is the commander of Ganas and son of Esha, he has rough and desirous tongue, he has reddish-brown eyes, he has incarnated on Earth for the welfare of Universe and its living beings, he symbolizes benevolence, auspiciousness and welfare, he is perceivable to the Yogis who eulogizes his  endless glories, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is primeval deity, he symbolizes sacred syllables of  Ekakshara, he is pure, he is beyond human intellect and virtues, he is supreme bliss, he has no specific forms, he is beyond human intellect or words, he is the essence of ‘Omkara’, I shall repeatedly prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is supreme bliss, I shall repeatedly prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is the source of actions of the Universe and destroyer as well, I shall repeatedly prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who has various pastimes, he is the source of absolute unity with the supreme spirit, perfect isolation which leads to emancipation and  eternal bliss, it provides detachment from material world as well, I shall repeatedly prostrate before supreme Lord Ganesha who is Vishvabeejam/source of Universe and its living beings, Oh! Eshasoonu, kindly protect us.


Whoever reads or listens to the above glorious verses praising the splendor of Lord Ganesha in the early hours of dawn, with intense devotion and faith, would get all their desires fulfilled, worshiper would achieve excellence in speech, and there is nothing is impossible to obtain with the grace of Lord Ganesha.

I shall always meditate upon supreme Goddess Saraswathi, who is Lokaikanatha who is the protector of the world, she is Prananatha of   Lord Bhrama/Sarojasana who is majestically seated on  the lotus flower, she is supreme Goddess who is most venerable, she eradicates ignorance and dullness of the worshiper, she is the source of nectar like excellence in speech, I shall meditate upon supreme Goddess Saraswathi who is stunningly beautiful, she represents all the female deities, she is ocean of mercy, she symbolizes wealth and auspiciousness, she is Viraja who is pure, she has great effulgence, she is adorned in magnificent crown on the long beautiful plait of hair, her marvelous crown is embellished with the crescent moon which spread cool rays, she has lustrous forehead, she has beautiful eye brows which excels the splendor of the bow of Lord of Love, she has most desirable lustrous eyes which excels the beauty of blue lilly, she has attractive nose resembles to the bud of autumnal lotus, her dazzling cheeks has the reflection of precious pearls, her beautiful lips resembles to coral , she has beautiful smile on lips which spread intense luster of moon, she has attractive line of teeth resembles to bud of Mallika, her attractive neck excels the beauty of shell, her two hands are in Vara and Abhaya hastha postures which provides abundance of boons as well as refuge to the worshiper who are surrendered at her lotus feet, she holds Pushtaka/sacred scriptures and Akshamala/prayer beads in each hands, she holds lotus flower, she has thousands of eyes, she has large and high bosom which resembles to the bulging forehead of King of elephant/Airavatha, and the heaviness of her bosom causes slight bend on forefront, she has deep navel and shining line of hairs, she has dark blue eyes, she has long attractive curly hair locks, she has pretty three lines on the belly and her luster excels the beauty of sacred fig tree, she is attired in pure white garment, she has attractive thighs and shank, she has attractive features that excels the beauty of Kamadeva, I shall meditate upon supreme Goddess Saraswathi who has attractive thighs, her upper feet resembles to shell of tortoise, her lotus feet are void of sorrows and miseries which has the luster of moon  resembles to shimmering buds, I shall repeatedly prostrate before Mahadevi who symbolizes all colors, I shall repeatedly prostrate before Mahadevi who is eulogized by all the deities, I shall repeatedly prostrate before supreme Goddess who resides in the dense wood of Mahapadmam, Oh! Devi, kindly bless us with knowledge in all fields, I shall prostrate before supreme Goddess who resides on the tongue of Padmabhu/lotus born Bhrama, I shall prostrate before supreme Goddess who is worshiped by Padmanethra who has beautiful eyes resembles to lotus flower petals/Lord Vishnu, I shall repeatedly prostrate before supreme Goddess who has the luster of fully blossomed lotus flower, I shall reverentially prostrate before supreme Goddess who is stunningly gorgeous and whose eyes has the resemblance to lotus flower petals, I shall prostrate before supreme Goddess who showers abundance of boons to virtuous and extremely formidable to wicked, she holds attractive parrot which has beautiful beak resembles to flowers of  palasha, its feathers has the luster of blue lily, and it has  attractive three colors on the neck, I shall always meditate upon supreme Goddess Saraswathi  who resides in the middle of dense wood of Kadamba, she is surrounded by female celestial apasaras and attendants, she takes immense pleasure in various pastimes,  and playing melodious music on Veena, she is anointed with the nectar  in the golden vessel, she is most desirable, she is beloved of her passionate devotees, she is most venerable, she is worshiped by Sanakadhis and illustrious Rishis and Sages, Oh! Jaganmatha, kindly purify our intellect, I shall repeatedly prostrate before supreme Goddess who represents all the female deities, she eradicates darkness of ignorance and illuminates like Marthanda/Surya, she is ShivA who symbolizes auspiciousness, she imparts supreme intellect, she is the protector of soul from the miseries and perils,  I shall meditate upon supreme Goddess who is beyond human intellect, she is unblemished, she is pure always, she is the safest heaven to worshiper who are surrendered at her lotus feet and she is the protector of them, she symbolizes female aspect of  trinities, she is the protector of three worlds, I shall repeatedly prostrate before the lotus feet of Goddess  Ambika,  Oh! Devi, kindly dance on the tip of our tongue always, Oh! Mother, who has boundless compassion and love towards distressed and desolate people, kindly protect us, I shall take refuge at your lotus feet, Oh! Anandhamoorthe who symbolizes supreme bliss, I am helpless, I am not aware of anyone other than you; hence I shall take refuge at your lotus feet.  Whoever reads or listens to the glorious verse of Bhujangaprayatha praising the splendor of Goddess Saraswathi, for three months during the early hours of dawn with intense devotion and faith, would attain the blessings of Goddess Saraswathi.

is Paramjyothiswaroopam who has supreme brilliance, he represents numerous forms of particle, Bhramam, living beings etc.. he is store house of virtues, he is extremely compassionate to his ardent
