Sri Vittala Sahasranama Sthothram – Padma Puranam – Dhyanam - Lyrics and meanings



|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||












Sri Shaunaka speaks “ These thousands of sacred names of Vittal are the essence of Veda, whoever reads or listens to it would   get their desires fulfilled instantly, Theertham/holy river, Kshethram/shrine and presiding deity are capable to purify and bring abundance of meritorious reward, therefore I would like listen to those glorious names of Vittala from your lotus like face, hence kindly narrate to me about the splendor of Lord Vittala who is Sathchithmukhaswaroopi/eternal bliss and always engrossed in the welfare of passionate devotees.”


Sri Sutha speaks “ Oh! Bhraman, carefully listen to the thousands of sacred names of supreme Lord Vittala, which is highly meritorious and superior among all the hymns of Sahasranama.  The Vittala Sahasranama is highly propitious hymn composed by Sri Pundarika Rishi, praising the Lord Srivittala who is supreme preceptor and Paramathma,  it has Anushtup as chandhas, Pundareeka Varaprasadha as Beejam,  Rukmneesha and Ramapathi as Shakthi, Pandurangesha as Keelakam, and  it is recited to please Sri Vittala. ”


|| Karanyasa: ||

“ I shall offer salutation to  Lord Pundareeka Varaprada with thumb,  I shall offer salutation to  Vittala: Pandurangesha/who is the Lord of Panduranga  with the forefinger,  I shall offer salutation to  Chandrabhaga Sarovasa who dwells on the sacred river bank of Chandrabhaga, with the middle finger, I shall offer salutation to Vajri  Shakthira Dhanda Dhara:/wielded in Vajri, shakthi and Dhanda/  with the ring finger, I shall offer salutation to Kalvamsharavakrantha/who eradicates birth in low clan/  with the little finger, I shall offer salutation to Yenonthakrinnamadhyeya:/who protects from sins and evil by  recitation of sacred names/ with the palm and back of the palm as well.”


|| Hridhayadhi Nyasa: ||

“I shall prostrate before superme Lord Pundareeka Varapradha  and assume his eternal presence in my heart,  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord  Vittala: Pandurangesha  and assume his eternal presence on my head, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord  Chandrabhaga Sarovasa and assume his eternal presence on my tuft, I shall prostrate before  Vajri Shakthira Dhanda Dhara: and assume him as protective armor,  I shall prostrate before  Kalvamsharavakrantha and assume his eternal presence in three eyes, I shall prostrate before Yenonthakrinnamadhyeya: and assume his eternal presence as weapon, I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Vittala and assume his eternal presence in all directions.”


Dhyanam –

“I shall prostrate before Lord Purushoththama who marvelously standing and keeping his lotus feet on the brick in an even way, placing both the hands on hip, decked in garland of Kadhamba flowers, he is holding Shakha/conch and Padma/lotus flower on both the hands, he has beautiful smile on his face, his  head is embellished in turban, he is attired in directions as garment, he is decorated in various ornaments all over his body, he is worshiped by Lord Bhrama and deities, he symbolizes supreme wisdom and knowledge, I shall meditate upon the supreme Lord who is personified as Vittala.”
