Kashi Sri Vishvanatha Ashtakam – Lyrics and meanings

I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishvanatha who is the Lord of sacred land Varanasi, he is adorned in beautiful streaming river Ganga on matted hair locks, he is inseparable from consort Goddess Girija who is seated on his left, he is beloved of Lord Narayana, he crushed the pride of Lord Kamadeva,  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishvanatha who is the Lord of sacred land Varanasi, he is beyond description, human intellect or senses, he is store house of virtues, his lotus feet are worshiped by Vageesha/Lord of speech/Lord Bhrama, Lord Vishnu and deities, he has marvelous form seated with most attractive Goddess Girija,  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishvanatha who is the Lord of sacred land Varanasi, he is the commander of Bhoothaganas, he is decked in venomous serpents all over his body, he is attired in the skin of tiger, he have attractive matted hair locks, he have three eyes, he is wielded in Pasham, Ankusham, and two hands are in Abhya and Varadha hastha posture respectively, he is wielded in powerful trident, I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishvanatha who is the Lord of sacred land Varanasi, he has the luster of moon, he is decked in magnificent crown, he has Lord Agni as third eye on his forehead, he is adorned in king of serpent as marvelous earrings that spreads intense radiance,  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishvanatha who is the Lord of sacred land Varanasi, he is fierce like lion that eradicates excessive pride, ego, lust, ignorance in worshiper, he is vicious like Garuda that obliterate the wicked nature in worshiper, he is like woodfire that eradicates the fear of death, aging, sorrow and miseries of worshiper,  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishvanatha who is the Lord of sacred land Varanasi, he has great splendor, he is beyond Saguna/virtues, properties, Nirguna/devoid of properties, he is unique, he is eternal bliss, he is unconquerable and unfathomable, he is adorned in serpents, he is pure, he dwells as soul in living beings, I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishvanatha who is the Lord of sacred land Varanasi, he is devoid of Ragadhosha/sins of lust, desire, passion, ego, jealousy, pride, etc… he is truly compassionate to his worshiper, he is the essence of renunciation and peace, he is embodied as Ardhanareeshavara/Shivashakthi, he symbolizes compassion, valor, and auspiciousness, he has bluish throat,  I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Vishvanatha who is the Lord of sacred land Varanasi,  leaving behind all my desires, tendency to criticize and finding fault in others, sin, lust, and I shall sincerely contemplate upon Paresha in my lotus like heart.  Whoever reads or listens to the glorious eight verses praising the splendor of Lord of sacred land of Varanasi, would attain highest of knowledge and wisdom, abundance of wealth, pleasures and eternal fame, ultimately liberation from repeated births.
