Sri Soma Sthothram/Sri Nishakara Sthothram – Lyrics and meanings

Sri Soma sthothra is highly propitious hymn composed by Rishi Gauthama, it has Anushtup as Chandhas, Soma as presiding deity, and it is recited to please Lord Soma.  I shall reverentialy recite the sacred syllable “Vam” and offer salutation with my thumb, I shall recite the sacred syllable  “Veem” and offer salutation with my index finger, I shall recite the sacred syllable “Voom” and offer salutation with my middle finger, I shall recite the sacred syllable “Vaim” and offer salutation with my ring finger and I shall recite the sacred syllable “Vaum” and offer salutation with my ring finger, I shall recite the sacred syllable “Va:” and offer salutation with my palm and back portion of palm, I shall recite the  sacred syllable “Vam” and offer salutation with my heart, I shall recite the sacred syllable a “Veem” and offer salutation with my head, I shall recite the sacred syllable “Voom” and offer salutation with my  tuft, I shall recite the sacred syllable “Vaim” and assume it as protective armor, I shall recite the sacred syllable “Vaum” and offer salutation with my eyes, I shall recite the sacred syllable ‘Va:” and assume it as Asthra, I shall recite Bhurbhuva: Suvarom and offer salutation to all directions.

Dhyanam –


I shall prostrate before Lord Chandhra who reveals his sparkling presence in the white sky, he is decked in garlands of white fresh alluring flowers that releases intense fragrances, he is mounted on the white grand chariot pulled by ten white horses, he is worshiped by all the deities, he is Sudhamshu who spreads nectar like cool rays, he is wielded in Gadha/mace and two hands are in Abhya/shelter and Varadha/boon posture respectively, he is decked in ornaments Srivathsa and precious pearls.


I shall prostrate before Lord Soma, who is born in the illustrious clan of Athreya, he rides on the grand chariot pulled by ten white horses, he emerges from south-easthern side, he belongs to the region of Yamuna, he is seated  on the  rectangular seat, he is wielded in mace, he is the consort of Devi Rohini,  I shall prostate before Lord Chandhra who represents prosperity, he is Kalanidhi who lures the entire Universe with his loveliness, he is decked in Keyoora/armlets and magnificent crown, he is the provider of boons to worshiper who are surrendered at his lotus feet, his eyes has the resemblance to Vasudeva, he is the cause of delight of Vasudha, he is Vidhu, he is adorned in white flower garlands, he is smeared in highly fragrant white musk, he carries white umbrella, he is Shashi, he is the source of life in the Universe, he spreads neactar like cool rays, he is Soma, I shall earnestly pray to Lord Soma to bless us with good health, he is King among Bhraman, he is  brother to Rama/Mahalakshmi, he is King among medicines, hence  Rajaneekara kindly protect us, he is precious gem decorated in the head of Lord Shankara, he has attractive eyes resembles to Shargni/Lord Vishnu, he is  Lord of stars, his lotus feet are capable to guide us to cross the ocean of Samsara/material existence, he is Kalyanamoorthi/auspicious, he is Varadha who provides abundance of boons to worshiper, he is Karunarasavaridhi who is ocean of mercy, he is originated while churning the milky ocean for nectar of immortality, Oh! Kalanatha, kindly protect us, he is initiated from the milky ocean along with Chinthamani, Oh! Kalpadhrumasahodhara/ brother to Kalpadhruma, kindly fulfil all our desires, Oh! Chandhra, who appears in the clear sky, decked in garlands and ornaments of white in color, wielded in mace, spreads intense white light, he has powerful two arms, he resembles to nectar and provider of boons to worshiper, and he is adorned in magnificent crown, Oh! Deva, kindly bless us.  The above are the Nishakarasthothram praising the splendor of Lord Soma, whoever recites or listens to it on daily basis would be relieved from all kinds of miseries and perils.
