Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham - Nithya Anithya Vasthu Vichara:

Chapter – 8 –Nithya Anithya Vasthu Vichara:

Oh! Rajan, Do you think the practice of learning Veda, Vedanta, Shastra, and Purana, and achieving vast knowledge in the scriptures and Vedas, performing all those Yaga, Yoga, Tapa, Karma with the desire to attain heavenly pleasures would do any good to Jeeva? Oh! Rajan, these have become commercial activities, unless and until the Jeeva strive for the destruction of Pralayagni like the miseries and sorrows of the  worldly existence without the knowledge of the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam which is supreme bliss resides as a soul in living beings and knowledge of oneness-in-all, all the above activities would not provide fruitfulness in their lives. Therefore Oh! Jeeva, leave all those practices yearning for material welfare that will bring no good to you, hence strive to achieve that supreme Bhramam with the constant meditation and contemplation.

Oh! Jeeva, at the end of the Yuga, the mount Mahameru which is well-known for its rich mineral and gems deposit break into pieces in the Pralayagni, all those oceans which are the storehouse of various pearls, giant aquatic animals like sharks, sea snakes, seal, alligator, dolphin, beautiful fishes of various species meet its death when the water dries up completely, the Earth which is the treasure house of richness and mountains meet massive destruction, do I need to explain the delicate Jeeva which has the strength of the edge of the elephant’s ears? Oh! Jeeva, you cannot withstand in that Mahapralaya, therefore contemplate upon that supreme Bhramam which is the cause for the deluge.

Oh! Jeeva, life on Earth is miserable, after some years the body starts to meet its ruin and it would become too thin and difficult to walk alone, the pair of teeth would disappear, eyes would lose its sight and the ears would lose the hearing capacity, the mouth would drench in dribble, the speeches would not be clear and audible, no one will have the interest or patience to listen or respond or follow them, your wife, children and relatives won’t have the patience to listen to you, eventually, they will become your enemies. How pathetic human life on Earth!

Oh! Jeeva, after a few years your hair would become gray, bones start to pop up and uneven which makes the ugly look, the old age is a curse; the beautiful women abandon old men like the well of Chandala. Oh! Jeeva, strive hard to achieve the ‘Shreyas’, /the knowledge of the supreme soul, which is all-pervasive, absolute Bhramam is the eternal truth and supreme bliss,/ while your body is free from illnesses, before reaching the old age, before the sense organs get damaged, before the life span ends. Otherwise, all your efforts would be like digging well when the house is on the fire. Oh! Jeeva, reading scriptures and sacred texts to understand the nature of the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam during old age is exactly like digging well when the house is on the fire.

Oh! Jeeva, the life span of humans are too short, hence be in the association of ascetics and saintly person, serve them relentlessly, and acquire the knowledge of the Paramamthma Thaththva, live on the river banks of Ganga, or serve your chaste wife with respect and kindness, while living in the Grahasthashrama, or conduct studies on scriptures and sacred texts, or read great poems which carries nectar-like messages. Oh! Jeeva,  a short span of life is not enough to do all those above mentioned.

The Kings who have an unsteady mind cannot get pleased easily. We are ordinary humans with great expectations and desires with a short span of life, our body is tender and delicate, attacked by Jara/aging and illnesses and life is snatched by Mrithyu as well. Oh! Sakha, the intellectuals strive hard to achieve the Paramarththa to make their life fruitful, the Jeeva with the unsteady mind undergoes sufferings and miseries and hurl into the vicious cycles of repeated births. The intellectuals take pleasure in the constant meditation and contemplation upon the supreme Bhramam, living in the caves or hermitage closer to the sacred river Ganga. The intellectuals do not waste their lives until the last minute; they do not wait to take the disgrace of the people in the families and children, they do not wait to meet ruin of wealth before their eyes, they do not wait to see the people approached for help return with disappointment, they do not wait to see abandoned by friends, relatives, and servants, and they do not wait to watch their youthfulness leaving all of a sudden.

Oh! Jeeva, the moon rays are beautiful, the lush green land, the happiness derived in the association of ascetics, intellectuals and saintly people are extremely pleasurable, good poetries, the reddened face of the lover soaked in tears due to the silly jokes, everything is beautiful to watch, Alas! If you have the knowledge of the impermanent nature of all those things, you won’t even take pleasure in it. Once, the Jeeva attained the Bhramanandham, the rest of the things in the Universe seems futile and least interesting. Oh! Jeeva, wake up, living in the sophisticated homes and fortress, listening to the melodious music and instrumental music, association with the beloved lover and wife are highly enjoyable. Alas! All those happiness and pleasure are momentary like the fireflies gets attracted to the flame, with the force of the wind it sacrifices life in the flame. Oh! Jeeva, wake up, all those intellectuals, scholars, and saintly people are already left to the forest leaving all those momentary happiness and in search of Bhramanandham/permanent bliss.
