Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter
- 3 -3
Chapter – 11 - The conversation between
Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 42 – 60
Vidura speaks “Oh! Bharatharshabha, the
gold shoved to the blazing fire turns to exquisite ornaments, the discipline, sincerity
and dedication in the work earns a good reputation, good character in a person
attracts everyone, the amount of fearlessness came to know at the times of
troubles, the sufferings of poverty makes a person amiable and courageous, the
dangerous situations in life make the companion turns to the enemy. Oh! Rajan,
Jara/aging destroys the loveliness of the Jeeva, the uncontrollable desires
destroys endurance, the Mrithyu/death takes away the Prana, jealous destroys
the Dharmanishta of a Jeeva, the anger destroys the auspiciousness, the association
with the Dhurjjana destroys the character of a person, lustfulness destroys the
shame and pride destroy everything owned by a person. Oh! Rajan, I shall
describe how the welfare and auspiciousness derives from the Sathkarma work in
the life of a Jeeva, it multiplies with the hard work and discipline, and it
enhances the skills and perseverance, and it deepens with the self-control. Oh!
Rajan, superintelligence, birth in an illustrious clan, good self-control,
knowledge in various fields, valor, limited speech, the performance of charity, and
gratitude makes a person shine in the world. These eight qualities get firm
and well-known when the person was honored and admired by the King. Oh! Rajan, I
shall describe the eight qualities which would provide the heavenly pleasures
while living on the Earth, and four of the qualities innate in the Sajjanas and the other four qualities that would enhance with the regular practices. 1)Yajjam, 2) Dhanam,
3) Adhyayanam 4) Tapasya are the innate
nature of Sajjanas, and the other four virtues multiply with the regular
practices are 1) Self-control 2)Sathyam 3) sincerity, 4) and kindness, these
are the qualities are practiced by these Sajjanas throughout their lives. Oh!
Rajan, there are ten virtues that would bring the attainment of heaven 1
)Sathyam 2) loveliness 3) knowledge in Shastra, 4)pure knowledge 5) birth in
illustrious clan 6) good virtues 7) courage 8) wealth 9) valor 10) ability to
engage in long and pleasing conversations. Oh! Rajan, a person who commits sin
would definitely undergo afflictions, and the person who performs righteous deeds would
enjoy the fruit of the same. The person who engages in the repeated sinful
deeds would meet the destruction of intellect; once the virtues and intellect
are lost the Jeeva permanently forces to commit the sin. The performance of righteous /pious deeds
would enhance the intellect of the Jeeva, which would protect the Jeeva from
the sinful deeds. Oh! Rajan, a person who is swollen with pride and jealous, a person who finds pleasure in insulting others, and a person who engages in
constant conflicts and arguments, would undergo afflictions. Oh! Rajan, the
person who is freed from jealous and pride, and sincerely follow the pious
deeds, and intelligent would not undergo troubles, live a happy and comfortable
life. Oh! Rajan, an intelligent person constantly strive to achieve knowledge
from different sources is the scholars, these kinds of people will have a thorough knowledge of Dharma and Adharma, so they strive for Dharma and Arththa
to achieve comfort and happiness. Oh! Rajan, a person who wants to spend the
night peaceful would finish all the work in the day, in the same manner, the
intelligent would make sure to store the grains and necessities for the rainy
season. Oh! Rajan, a person who wants to live a comfortable life in the latter
years of age would make sure to work during youthful days with farsightedness.
In the same manner, the Jeeva should perform righteous deeds while on the
Earth to achieve a comfortable stay afterlife as well /life in the Paraloka. Oh! Rajan, the intellectuals respect the
grains that easily get digested, the wife who has lost youthfulness, the
warrior who has achieved victory in the battlefield, and well-known Tapasvis
and ascetics. Oh! Rajan, the religious and spiritual rites, and various pious
deeds performed with the money earned in immoral ways would not bring fruitful results;
moreover, it would bring unresolved issues in the life of the doer.”
