Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter
- 5 - 1
Chapter – 1 - The conversation between
Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 5 -1
Vidura speaks “Oh! Vaichithra Veerya,
listen to me carefully, Swayambhuva Manu described the seventeen
categories of the people who are least trustworthy, and it is a futile effort
to correct these kinds of people, if so it would be running after the air to
fasten it. These seventeen categories of people chase towards hell. 1) The person who prepares to smack the sky with his fist, 2) people who make an effort to bend the rainbow, 3)people who
tries to get hold of the sun rays. 4) Preceptor who gets angry on the person
who is not his disciple 5) Person who tries to calm down the other who is in
extreme fury 6) person who takes control over the weakness of the women 7) the person who beg to the one who is a miser by birth 8) person who self-praise 9) the person who engages in immoral activities after having birth in the illustrious
clan 10) the person who desire for something which does not worth to him/her 11)
Shvashura/father-in-law who jokes with the daughter-in-law 12) Shvashura who
lives in the association with the daughter-in-law and protect his dignity 13) the person who spread rumors 14) person who complains about his wife publicly 15) the person who forgets the favor of others 16) Person who claims permanent
possession of the things which was borrowed 17) person who tries to calm down a
born-wicked. Oh! Rajan, it is fair to treat the person who treats and behave to
you, in the sense, people who mistreat you should be treated in the same manner,
and the person who is truthful should be treated exactly in the same way.”
Dhritarashtra speaks “Oh! Vidura, it was
predicted that the human life span is a hundred years in the scriptures, although
why did the human does not achieve the same? What is the reason for the
shortage of life span? Explain to me.”
Vidura speaks “Oh! Rajan, it was not the
death takes away the Prana, I shall describe them clearly 1) The excessive
haughtiness 2) unnecessary talks 3) lack of sacrificing nature 4) Krodham/anger
5) curiosity 6) Mithradhroham. Oh!
Rajan, these are like a sharp sword that would cut off the life span of a human. Oh!
Rajan, I wish all the success to you. Oh! Rajan, I shall describe the
Bhramahathya sins which require performing atonement to get rid of the sin,
hence Veda strongly recommends Prayashchiththa for all these sins. 1) person
who approaches the wife of his companion
2) person who approaches the wife of the preceptor 2) person who slaughters the
cows 3) person who kills or disgrace the Bhramin 4) Twice-born who accepts
Shudra woman as wife 5) Person who is disrespectful towards preceptor and
illustrious scholars 6) Bhramin who consume intoxicating drinks 4) Person who
creates an obstacle to the livelihood of others 5) Person who appoints twice-born
as servant 6) The person who has taken away the life of the one who is
surrendered to him. Oh! Rajan, I shall describe the nature of noble souls who
achieve heavenly abode 1) Grihastha 2) Dhanasheela 3) people who keep up
promises 4) people who sincerely follow the worship Deva and Pithrus, and
consume meals after offerings made to the deities and Pithrus. 5) person who
strongly believes in non-violence and strictly follows them 6) person who does
not create havoc in a society 7) person who does not engages in arguments and
conflicts 8) grateful people 9) Truthful 10) pleasing natured and 11)
wise. Oh! Rajan, it is difficult to find
people who talk pleasantly and truthful, in the same manner, it is rare to find
people who are promising and always think about the welfare of others. Oh! Rajan, listen
to me carefully, it is not a Sthuthipadaka who always engages in the praise of
you, it is the minister who always speaks of Dharma and most promising things
for the King and the Kingdom, without considering the likes and dislikes of the
King would increase the strength of the King and multiplies the welfare of the
Kingdom. Oh! Rajan, it is advisable to discard the person who is harmful and
disgraceful to the clan, it is advisable to discard a clan who engages in
immoral deeds for the welfare of the village, it is advisable to abandon the
Earth for the welfare of the soul. Oh! Rajan, the wise would store wealth and
grains for the difficult times, it is important to protect wife with great care,
more than the wealth, Oh! Rajan, a person should protect his self/
Athman/knowledge of self, more than wealth and wife. Oh! Vaichithraveerya, I
have already instructed you about the evil consequences of the gambling between
the Kaurava and Pandava, but you did not take my word like a patient does not
follow the medication. Oh! Narendra, Pandavas are the essence of Dharma, like
the peacocks with beautiful and colorful feathers, you wanted them to overpower
by your sons like the crow. You are leaving the lions, letting them remain
unprotected and caring the Jackals, when the time comes you would cry over it.
Oh! Thatha, a good master won’t behave harshly to his truthful servant who
serves sincerely, and vests complete trust upon them, therefore both of them
won’t leave each other during the troubled times.”
