Chapter – 172- Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The recitation of Sri
Ramanama is significant in the Kali era
Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, how could
you liberate me from the sufferings of worldly existence? I am reluctant to
leave the chase for physical and material pleasures, I am a grave sinner by
words, mind, and deed. My intellect is unwilling to leave the interest in
worldly matters of possession, richness, fame, money, children, wife, companion, and relatives of fleeting nature. My day and nights are spent for the
prosperity and fame of my clan and family. Oh! Prabho, my sins are countless,
if Lord Ganesha makes an effort to write down the list of my sins, using the
Prithvi/earth as paper, Kalpavruksha/wish-fulfilling tree as the pen, and ocean
water as ink, I fear he could not complete it. Oh! Prabho, you have liberated
Gajendra, the elephant that took great pleasure in its herds, finally, it was
caught on the leg by the crocodile in the pond made several attempts to release
was failed, ultimately it was left alone by the family, children, wife,
companions. Oh! Prabho, you have
liberated Ganika, the prostitute who was aged, abandoned by the crowd, finally, she took great care of a parrot brought from the house of a devotee of Lord Hari,
mere listening to the Harinama from the parrot, she has attained liberation
from the worldly existence. Oh! Prabho, the twice-born/Brahmin Ajamila was got
attracted to a prostitute in the forest while he was collecting Samith/dried and
brittle wooden sticks used for the fire sacrifice. He forgot his family, and aged
parents and started living with the prostitute for several years, the couple had
children, the youngest one was named ‘Narayana’ who was too fond of Ajamila. At
the death bed, Ajamila cried out calling for the youngest son Narayana and got
liberated from the clutches of emissaries of Yama. Oh! Prabho, I have committed
heinous crimes that cannot be compared to Ajamila, Gajendra, and Ganika. The Lord Chithraguptha would get tired of
counting my sins, the illustrious sages and Maharishi Brighu would get
disappointed listening to the list of Aparadha/sins, and the Lord Yama would get annoyed
listening to it and wouldn’t let me live in hell too. Oh!
Kripanidhan,/merciful, you are the purifier of souls, your sacred names are
capable to liberate the Jeeva from the sufferings of worldly existence, fear of
death, Thapathraya, and repeated births. Oh! Prabho, after listening to your
endless glories I have gained the courage that I would get rid of impurities of
the mind, sufferings of worldly existence, and repeated births by mere chanting your
sacred names, along with your compassionate grace.”
