Chapter – 298-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –Be kind and truthful, and the association with the saintly people/Santh, Mahathma Sapurusha would bring fruitfulness in life

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, we have achieved the rarest birth as a human after an abundance of pieties from several births, and the precious birth as a human should be utilized to achieve the four Purusharththa/Dharma, Arththa, Kama, and Moksha. In order to achieve the fruitfulness of life 1) be kind 2) truthful, 3) be in association with saintly people/Santh, Sathpurusha, and Mahathma, the mere nearness and listening to their nectar-like speeches are enough to remove your grief and sufferings of worldly existence. Oh! Mortals, listening to the glorious legends of the all-pervasive supreme Lord and reciting his sacred names would keep you away from the attachment to the worldly matters of infinite nature and three kinds of grief, hence practice pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari would transport you to the state of ecstasy, shedding tears of joy mere listening to the countless virtues of the Lord, your bodily hair would stand upright in extreme happiness, your voice would get trailed and you would perceive that Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma everywhere/Oneness-in-All. In this way, all your impurities of mind such as lust, desire, ego, anger, jealousy, pride, Ahamkara and Mamakara, and attachments to worldly matters would vanish, and you would perceive that all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva is nothing but ETERNAL BLISS.”

Chapter – 297-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The precious birth as a human should be utilized to achieve fruitfulness

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, abandon your interest in worldly matters of infinite sounds, passion, touch, smell, and appearance, and chase after the material matters of possession, wealth, money, richness, children, wife, fame, companion, and relatives of fleeting nature, and engage in the worship at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari.  Oh! Mortals, the worship of demi-gods for fulfilling desires, performing rites, etc. won’t protect you from the grief and suffering of the bottomless ocean of worldly existence and repeated births. Oh! Mortals, we have taken several births in various wombs of animals, birds, reptiles, and humans, and in each birth, we were absorbed in that body and committed sins by words, deeds, and mine, thereby we have accumulated sins of mountain-sized, and there is no way out of the cycles of births unless and until the sins nullified, and there is no way out to get rid of the accumulated sins other than the meditation and contemplation of Lord Sri Hari. The devotion and pure love at the lotus feet of Lord Sri would work as a powerful sword to sieve off the mountain-sized sins of several births. The Veda, Purana, Bhagavath, Gita, etc. highly emphasizes the practice of devotion and austerities, the worship at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari would work as the safest ferry to cross the unfathomable ocean of worldly existence and repeated births. Oh! Mortals, listen to me carefully, you don’t have much time left to live, leave your attachments to worldly matters, and practice meditation and contemplation at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari immediately, life is unpredictable and has the life of water bubbles, and the time spent won’t come back, hence take this opportunity to achieve the fruitfulness of life, otherwise you may throw yourself into eighty-four lakh wombs and go through hellish tortures to achieve the precious birth as  a human.”

Chapter – 296-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of remembrance of the all-pervasive supreme Lord to get rid of grief

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mind, meditate, and contemplate upon the supreme Lord Sri Hari, who is the savior of the distressed souls, sing in praise of his glorious legends, and worship at his lotus feet which is the ultimate asylum even for the grave sinners to get rid of suffering and repeated births. Oh! Mind, the all-pervasive supreme Lord Sri Hari removes the anxiousness and fear of his devotees, hence take shelter at his lotus feet, and contemplate upon him. The Bhramin Ajamila who abandoned his elderly parents, family, and the Bhramanic way of life for a prostitute in the forest, later years of age at the death bed he cried out for his youngest son ‘Narayana’, thus he got liberated from the dreadful emissaries of Lord Yama/Lord of Death. The King of birds, eagle/Jatayu got brutally wounded while fighting to get freed Devi Sita from the forceful custody of the ten-headed demon Ravana, and finally left his mortal coil on the lap of Lord Rama, thus it got liberated from suffering. The Ganika/prostitute, in her later years of age lived in complete isolation, she brought a parrot from the devotee of Lord Sri Hari, mere listening to the Sri Ramanama from the parrot she attained liberation from worldly existence. Arjuna was the most fortunate one to attain Lord Sri Krishna as his dearest companion, the Mookachandala served his parents like the supreme Lord Sri Hari, and eventually got rid of grief of worldly existence. The Brahmin couple who lived in the Dwaraka, lost all their children immediately after birth attained the grace of Lord Krishna, and regained all their children. The elephant Gajaraj who was seized on the leg by the crocodile in the pond was abandoned by his family and friends, fought several years all alone, and finally cried out for Lord Sri Hari, and got relieved from the curse. The child devotee Prahaladha was tortured by his father demon Hiranyakashipu, finally, the supreme Lord Sri Hari incarnated as half-lion and half-man, and ripped off the chest of Hiranyakashipu.  Oh! Prabho you have promised to protect your devotees from all the troubles, thus whoever sang in praise of your glories was protected and liberated from the repeated cycles of birth.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, how do I live without the worship of your lotus feet? How can I refrain from pure love at your lotus feet? Oh! Prabho, you are the cause of the Universe, and its living and non-living things, Oh! Lord of the Universe, you are the creator, preserver, and destroyer of the Universe, you are omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam/Sath-eternal, Chith-pure, Anandha-bliss/ resides as a soul in the living beings, you are the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, chiththa, Ahamkara, Karma, and Gnanendhriyas, etc. You represent the Mahaththaththva/sun, moon, fire, and air, and Panchaththaththva/Earth, air, water, ether, and fire, the three attributes/Rajasi, Sathvik, and Thamasik, etc. Oh! Prabho, I am that Harina/deer that gets attracted to the melodious music and get caught up in the hands of the hunter, I am that Chakora bird that takes great pleasure looking at the full moon and keeps staring at it. I am that lotus flower that blossoms at the sight of sunrise, in the same manner, I take great pleasure in singing in praise of your virtues and listening to your glorious legends.”

Chapter – 294-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of Prapaththi/surrender

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, how did I achieve eternal bliss? I have no one to protect me from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence, I have taken shelter at your lotus feet, like the anxious bird flying around searching for a comfortable place to settle, finally returning to its own place. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Kamalalochan the Jeeva who performs various rites yearning for fruitful results, and worships demi gods leaving your lotus feet are ignorant, like the thirsty fellow dig for well leaving the sacred waters of river Ganga. Oh! Prabho, the honeybee that has known the taste of the nectar of lotus flower won’t taste the bitter flowers. Oh! Prabho, you resemble the divine cow Kamadhenu, which fulfills all the desires of your devotees, and your unconquerable Maya is like a goat, why should the wise approach the goat by leaving Kamadhenu/the divine cow for milk? Oh! Prabho, the worldly matters of infinite sounds, appearance, touch, smell, passion, etc. are your Maya/illusion, which is ‘unreal’ and has the fleeting nature of a ‘dream’, as soon as the person wakes up from the slumber, the dreams will disappear, your unconquerable Maya hurls the ignorant Jeeva into a deep slumber, and the knowledge-of-self/Oneness-in-all/The absolute truth/Paramarththa Thaththva/the knowledge of Sacchidhanandha Paramathma Parambhramam would burn the ignorance.”

Chapter – 293-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Prapaththi/surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari to get rid of Thapathraya

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, kindly shower your compassionate grace upon me and provide intense devotion at your lotus feet. I have abandoned the interest in infinite worldly matters of sounds, appearances, smell, touch, and passion, of fleeting nature, that have constantly thrown me into grief and agony, hence kindly provide me firm devotion at your lotus feet. Oh! Prabho, I have soaked in your powerful illusion/Maya the moment I was thrown out of the womb of my mother, I have continued the chase after the toxic poison of worldly matters, thereby I am worn out of grief and agony, now I am burning in the flames of three kinds of grief. Oh! Prabho, I have committed various sins by words, mind, and deed while chasing for appeasing my senses. Alas, I have been thrown from the top of the hill of illusion several times! Even after that, I did not control my senses or I did not get satisfied. The deities and Lord Shankara may get surprised to watch my ignorance, and no one can protect me from the Thapathraya. I have performed several rites with the selfish motive to fulfil my endless desires, unfortunately, none of the deities are pleased with me. Oh! Prabho, I have committed several sins, hence taken several births in various wombs of birds, animals, and humans, and each time I ended up in the abode of Yama to go through the hellish torture, the emissaries of Yama are tired and horrified of witnessing a grave sinner again and again. Oh! Prabho, I am drenched in impurities of lust, ego, jealousy, pride, anger, desire, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, therefore I have no shame to perform any immoral deeds. Oh! Pathithapavan/savior of the souls, I have promised to myself to abandon my interest in worldly matters of possession, wealth, richness, money, fame, children, wife, companion, and relatives, I have taken shelter at your lotus feet, I am standing at your doorsteps. Oh! Kripanidhan, I am determined, I won’t leave your doorstep even if you ignore me, or forcefully throw me out of your vicinity. Oh! Prabho, I have no one to protect me other than you.”

Chapter – 291-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The Universe has been created to live all the living things in complete harmony and peace

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, the supreme Lord Sri Hari is the Lord of the Universe /Vishwambar, and its living and non-living things, he is the preserver of the Universe, and he’s the source of the welfare and happiness, hence whoever surrenders at the lotus feet of the Lord, abandoning the interest in the worldly matters of possession, wealth, richness, money, fame, children, wife, companion and relatives of fleeting nature, won’t get anxious about the necessities of the life, as the cow and calf tied to the shed will be taken care by its owner. How can the supreme Lord forget the Jeeva who have already taken shelter at his lotus feet? Oh! Mortals, it was the grace of supreme Lord Sri Hari that nourished the fetus while in the mother’s womb, and it was his kindness that arranged for the mother’s milk as soon as the infant was pushed out of the mother’s womb. Oh! Mortals, it was the kindness of Lord Sri Hari that the mountains hold the rich mineral and natural resources, the rivers carry crystal clear water and provide shelter to the various species of aquatic animals and quench the thirst of living things, and the forest holds a multitude of trees that bear flowers and fruits as well as provide shelter to animals and birds, etc. Oh! Mortals, Lord Sri Hari has given us two hands to use as vessels to hold water, the skin of trees as clothing, a beautiful Earth as bedding, and caves as shelter places. Therefore, leave your anxiousness and take shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, and contemplate and meditate upon him to get rid of the sufferings of worldly existence and repeated births.”

Chapter – 290-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Any Karma/deeds performed with the impurities of mind won’t bring desired results

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, 1) the practice of Yoga, Yajja, Japa, and Thapa won’t bring good results as long the person is swollen with lust, desire, ego, jealousy, pride, anger, etc. hence, any Karma/deeds performed with the impurities of mind won’t bring desired results, it would be a futile effort. Oh! Mortals, 2) the excessive interest in worldly matters can’t provide Purusharththa, even if he/she undertakes Theerthayathra, the holy dip in the sacred rivers, dressed in saffron robes, smeared sacred ashes, and adorned in matted hair locks. Oh! Mortals, 3) The knowledge in the eighteen scriptures and Veda cannot make one’s life fruitful, if the person is soaked in lust, desire, ego, jealousy, pride, and anger. It would be like the Thapasya hanging upside down on the flames. Oh! Mortals, excessive interest in infinite worldly matters of Shabdha, Sparsha, Rasa, Roopa, and Gandha/sound, touch, passion, appearance and smell, the lack of self-control, and the impurities of mind such as lust, desire, ego, jealousy, pride, and anger, etc. are the enemies causes hindrance in achieving the four Purusharththa/Dharma, Arththa, Kama and Moksha. Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The cycles of birth and death - The growth of the fetus in the mother’s womb and the description of human life

Chapter – 288-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The cycles of birth and death - The growth of the fetus in the mother’s womb and the description of human life

The unfortunate Jeeva/humans drenched in worldly matters of infinite sounds, touches, passion, smell, and appearances, driven afar from the practice of devotion/Bhakti, wisdom/Gnana, and Vairagya/renunciation gets thrown into the abode of Lord Yama after death and undergoes hellish tortures. After some time, the soul enters into the womb of any of these eighty-four Lakh types of creatures in the Universe, and keeps taking birth as Air-born, Water-born, and Earth-born creature and undergoes suffering, and this will continue until the soul enters into the Veerya/sperm of the father through the meals consumed, eventually, the sperm get deposited into the womb of a mother through their intimate physical contact. This is how a soul attains the precious birth of a human after hurling into the series of cycles of birth and death in the womb of eighty-four Lakh types of creatures.

The first few days after the physical relationship, the sperm deposited in the mother’s womb would remain as a water bubble, and it takes a month to grow into the size of a berry. The next month, the berry-sized fetus achieves a head, in the third month it achieves hands and legs, and in the fourth month the fingers start to grow, and the Pranavayau/vital air of the mother gives movement to the fetus. In the fifth month, the fetus would achieve bones, and in the sixth month the Indhriya/sensory organs. In the seventh month, the fetus achieves ‘life’/consciousness, and in the eighth month, the fetus achieves all the limbs. The fetus turns upside down in the mother’s womb, and here onwards the struggle begins for the unborn, the head remains in the water mixed with its excreta, urine, and worms. The heat and cold food consumed by the mother would become unbearable for the fetus, which makes the fetus constantly move in the tiny dark space in the mother’s womb. The worms from the excreta and urine constantly attack its tender head, and it becomes unbearable in this way, the fetus undergoes hellish torture in the mother’s womb. In the ninth month, the fetus recollects its previous birth and repeatedly prays to the supreme Lord “ Oh! Prabho, kindly protect me from the hellish torture, if I leave this tiny dark space, I will practice devotion at your lotus feet, Oh! Prabho, kindly shower your compassionate grace and provide me Ananyabhakthi/uninterrupted devotion at your lotus feet, and do not forget the supreme wisdom.” Thus, in the tenth month, the infant is pushed out of the mother’s womb, and eventually, it forgets everything that has happened while in the mother’s womb.

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “ The initial childhood days are extremely difficult, the hunger, thirst, and pain cannot be expressed by words, the child has to lay in excreta and urine unnoticed, and in addition to that the troubles from the flies. After six months, the child starts to move here and there, and the parents won’t allow it, again the child feels unhappy. The parents take care of the child with great love, and in return, the child starts to show affection to them, in this way, the bond between the child and parent gets stronger.  Childhood is spent in various amusements, and as the years pass by the child grows into an adult.  Later, the Jeeva/human gets married to a beautiful woman, and together their needs grow endless, like decent meals, clothing, shelter, etc. Once again, the Jeeva feels disappointed to bring the necessities of life and the chase begins for the accumulation of wealth, possession, fame money, richness, children, companion, relatives, etc. and it continues until the later years of age. Once, the Jeeva attains the later years of age, the sensory organs become dull, the ears lose their hearing capacity, eyesight becomes dull, the limbs become fragile, movements get restricted, the limbs won’t co-ordinate with the mind, and the understanding ability disappears, the memory loses, speaking ability reduces, words won’t come out of the mouth, the airways get blocked, consumption of meals becomes difficult, and the persistent fear of death, loneliness, grief at the separation of beloved ones becomes a constant companion. Finally, the Jeeva meets its end with huge regret for not striving to achieve the ultimate object of human life, the four Purusharththa/righteousness, wealth to do righteous deeds, desire to perform righteous deeds, and Moksha/liberation from worldly existence. Once again, the soul gets shoveled into the hellish torture in the abode of Yama and thrown to the womb of eighty-four-lakh types of creatures such as Airborn, Waterborn, and Earthborn, thus, the cycles of death and birth continue. Oh! Mortals, abandon your interest in worldly matters of fleeting nature and contemplate and meditate upon Lord Sri Hari to get rid of sufferings of worldly existence and repeated births.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Sankhya Philosophy/Karma Yoga, Gnana Yoga, and Bhakthi Yoga - The conclusion of the Kapilopadhesham/conversation between Devi Devahoothi and Sage Kapila

Chapter – 287-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –Sankhya Philosophy/Karma Yoga, Gnana Yoga, and Bhakthi Yoga - The conclusion of the Kapilopadhesham/conversation between Devi Devahoothi and Sage Kapila

Sage Kapila speaks “Oh! Mother, if the devotee is Sakama/yearning for Purusharththa, he would achieve that with the gradual practice of devotion, these devotees achieve the Bhramaloka, and at the end of Mahapralaya/deluge, they will attain the supreme abode of Lord Sri Hari. The Nishkama Bhakth/liberated souls need not wait too long, they immediately attain the supreme abode and will not fall into the cycles of birth and death. Oh! Mother, I shall describe the three types of devotion that would provide the supreme abode of Lord Sri Hari, listen to me carefully.

1) Karma Yoga – The Karmayogi sincerely follows Dharma, the religious and spiritual rites, Varnna and Ashrama Dharma, with the practice of Nishkama Bhakthi /practice of devotion without any desire to achieve worldly matters, would attain my supreme abode.

2) Bhakthi Yoga – The Bhakthiyogi sing in praise of the glories of Lord Sri Hari, with the constant remembrance of the Lord, conducts the worship of the Lord, and eventually attains the abode of Lord Sri Hari.

3) Gnana Yoga – The Gnana Yogi with the knowledge of self/Paramarththa Thaththva/The absolute truth -Oneness in All, considers all the living and non-living things as the Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhram/Lord Sri Hari, and spread love and kindness, ultimately attain the supreme abode.

Sage Kapila concluded “Oh! Mother, all my devotees with the gradual practice of devotion attain the abode of Sri Vaikundam. Whoever listens, or recites the conversation between you and me in the Kali era would attain the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari.”

Devi Devahoothi prostrated before Sage Kapila and spoke “Oh! Prabho, previously I was ignorant and considered you as my son, but now I have understood that you are Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhram/Eshwar. I have achieved the supreme wisdom with your grace and my ignorance has disappeared, and the grief as well.” Later Devi Devahoothi proceeded to the wood and conducted extreme penance contemplating upon the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, and left the mortal coil.”

Sage Shukadeva speaks to King Pareekshith “Oh! Rajan, I have retold the conversation between Sage Kapila and Devi Devahoothi, which was known as Sankhyopadhesha. Whoever reads and listens to the marvelous Sankhya Philosophy, and contemplates, and meditates upon the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari would achieve the abode of the Supreme Lord.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of the practice of devotion - The conversation between Devi Devahoothi and Sage Kapila

Chapter – 286-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of the practice of devotion - The conversation between Devi Devahoothi and Sage Kapila

Devi Devahoothi speaks “Oh! Vathsa/son, Oh! Prabho, my desire to be with my husband Sage Kardhamaprajapathi is not letting me live in peace, kindly advise me on how to get rid of the grief of separation from him.”

Sage Kapila/incarnation of Lord Sri Hari replied “Oh! Mother, I shall describe the practice of devotion and its techniques elaborately, if you practice the four kinds of devotion, you would gradually get rid of the grief and sufferings of worldly existence. Oh! Mother, if you want to travel to a distant place, you have to prepare yourself, you have to choose the mode of transport and the requirements for the travel, etc. in this way, the devotees attain ME with the practice of devotion. If someone is already on a journey and became exhausted half of the way, the other person discourages saying that ‘you are not going to make it to that far-off place’ then the person already disappointed would die of fear. Instead, he was motivated and encouraged to go on with all the strength to reach the destination, definitely, he will make it. Oh! Mother, the spiritual seeker/Sadhaka with immense courage would reach ME with the perpetual practice of devotion. Oh! Mother, the Thamoguni Upasak/devotee with Thamasik nature, desires the terrible death of his enemy. The Rajoguni Upasak/devotee with the Rajasik nature, yearn for wealth, possession, richness, fame, children, wife, companion, and relatives. The Sathvikbhakth relentlessly serve the Santh, Mahathma, and Sathpurusha, and consider them as emissaries of God, even if they desire Mukthi/liberation, I shall provide without any hesitation.  Oh! Mother, the Nirguna Nishkama Bhakth won’t yearn for Mukthi, they immerse in supreme bliss perceiving the Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam in their hearts, and Oneness-in-all, persistently engage in the meditation and contemplation upon me. These are Paramamuktha/liberated souls, they are free from worldly matters, desires, and the sufferings of dualities, these liberated souls will not return to the ocean of Samsara. Oh! Mother, the Sadhaka whoever chosen any one of these four kinds of the practice of devotion won’t meet destruction, all of them would achieve the supreme abode with the gradual practice of devotion, but the liberated souls are beloved of mine, they will not return to worldly existence and the cycles of birth and death.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Who is a liberated soul? - The method of meditation upon the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari – Conversation between Devahoothi and Sage Kapila

Chapter – 285-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Who is a liberated soul? - The method of meditation upon the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari – Conversation between Devahoothi and Sage Kapila

Sage Kapila speaks “Oh! Mother, the association with the Sathpurusha, Santh Mahathma would remove the impurities of the mind such as lust, desire, ego, jealousy, pride, anger, Ahamkara and Mamakara, and eventually the interest in sinful deeds too. The intake of meals should be limited, the half of the stomach should fill with water and the remaining half with cooked grains, leaving spaces for the circulation of air, so that it won’t create lethargy in the person. Whatever is earned should be accepted with utmost content, leaving greed and always striving to achieve more. Oh! Mother, live in a workplace where there is no fear, even if it is a sacred place if the fear persists, it is advisable to leave the place immediately. The intellectuals/spiritual seekers/Mahapurusha perceives Bhagavan Sri Hari who has a dark cloud complexion and his four arms holding the Shankha, Chakra, Gadha, and Padmam/ Chathurbhujaroopa Shyamavarnna and meditates upon his lotus feet, which is the origin of the sacred river Ganga on the Earth, and the powerful water current settled on the matted hair locks of Lord Shiva, thus it multiplied the auspiciousness of Lord Shiva. Oh! Mother, perceive the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari which is always caressed by Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, and keep staring at the marvelousness of it. Oh! Mother, perceive the beautiful calves of Lord Sri Hari that resemble the trunk of a plantain tree, or pillars of the precious yellow metal, meditate upon the wide and beautiful chest, and the neck area, adorned with the symbol of Srivathsa, the Vanamala/ garland of various fresh alluring flowers, and the precious gem Kausthubha necklace respectively. Oh! Mother, perceive the deep navel of the Lord, and a pleasing smile on his attractive face. His beautiful eyes are long and stretched up to ears, which resemble the petals of lotus flowers that would remove the grief and sufferings of worldly existence. Oh! Mother, he has a beautiful nose, that resembles the beak of a parrot would remove the grief as well the suffering from the dualities of sorrow and happiness, joy and grief, honor and disgrace, cold and heat, etc. His ears resemble a deep well and are adorned in beautiful fish-shaped ear ornaments, he is adorned with vermilion and sandalwood paste on the beautiful forehead is beyond description, the effulgence of his forehead is beyond comparison, there is no beautiful thing in the Universe to match with it, that excels the beauty of crores of Kamadeva. His beautiful curly hair locks adorned with the magnificent crown and feathers of the peacock. He is attired in the finest yellow silk garments, that would steal the hearts of his devotees. Oh! Mother, in this way, perceive the most brilliant form of Lord Sri Hari in your mind, and contemplate upon the marvelous form of the Lord, if the mind shows the tendency to sneak on to the Samsara, arrest it and bring back to the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari. This kind of practice would bring fruitful results, the spiritual seeker would adapt to being seated in a place leaving anxiousness, which would lead the mind to immerse in meditation as well. Finally, the Sadhaka will achieve a state of trance while walking and living in the Samsara, leaving the attachments to worldly matters of fleeting nature, and perceive that supreme Bhramam that would make them forget the worldly existence, hunger or thirst, happiness or sorrow, pain or joy, and completely get rid of Thapathraya, these are Jeevanmuktha/liberated souls, even though they live in the Samsara, they live like the lotus flower grown from the mud pond, gracefully poised from water and dirt, free from all the impurities.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The origin of Universe/Bramanda from the ‘Egg’ – Athmavidhya/Bhramajjyan/ The knowledge of self to get rid of the illusion – The conversation between Devi Devahoothi and Sage Kapila

Chapter – 284-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The origin of Universe/Bramanda from the ‘Egg’ – Athmavidhya/Bhramajjyan/ The knowledge of self to get rid of the illusion– The conversation between Devi Devahoothi and Sage Kapila

Devi Devahoothi speaks “Oh! Vathsa/son,  Oh! Prabho, kindly describe the significance of Bhakthi/devotion, and the characteristics of devotion, so that I can attain that supreme abode of Lord Sri Hari.”

Sage Kapila replied “Oh! Mother,

there are four kinds of Bhakthi/devotion, 1) Sathvagunamayi 2) Rajogunamayi 3) Thamogunamayi and 4) Sudhdhasaththva. The devotion/Bhakthi is a significant concept that has different nature, like the colors added to the water.

The devotee with the Sathvagunamayi Bhakthi yearns for Mukthi/liberation from worldly existence and repeated births. The devotee with the Rajogunamayi Bhakthi desires wealth, possession, richness, money, children, wife, relatives, and companions. The devotee with the Thamogunamayi Bhakti yearns for his enemy should face a miserable death’. Oh! Mother, listen to me carefully, finally, the devotee with the Sudhdhasathvamayi Bhakthi yearns to achieve the supreme Bhramam/ME, they do not yearn for Mukthi/liberation and immerse in the service of Lord Sri Hari with the mind, deed, and words, they completely abandon desires, and the attachment to worldly matters, these devotees are beloved to me, I will not let them alone not even for a second, whatever they desires would be for the benefit of all. I have a great love for these kinds of devotees, and there is no one greater than them.”

Sage Kapila/incarnation of Lord Sri Hari continues “Oh! Mother, I have three kinds of devotees 1) Rajasik 2) Sathvik and 3) Thamasik, and whatever they yearn I shall make sure to provide them, but there is Ananyabhakth/uninterrupted devotion/my devotee with pure love and firm devotion won’t request for anything to me, it makes me puzzled and embarrassed. These Ananyabhakthas are wise with supreme wisdom, they do not keep enmity or friendships. They are too intelligent, understands the absolute truth that the unconquerable Maya of Sripathi causes grief, they are out of Maya/illusion and Moha/desire, hence do not plummet in grief during the hours of trouble.”

Devi Devahoothi speaks “Oh! Prabho, kindly describe the grandeur of Lord Sri Hari and his unconquerable Maya/illusion.”

Sage Kapila was extremely delighted to watch the inquisitiveness of Mother Devahoothi and began to explain “Oh! Mother, the sun, and the moon are the Lord of day and night respectively, they function at the will of Lord Sri Hari, hence Sun does not fail to rise in the morning, spreading moderate heat to nurture the living and non-living things, same as the Moon does not fail to show up in the night spreading moderate coolness to wave off the exhaustion of the living and non-living things, not to freeze them to deaths. The Air/Lord Varuna does not overthrow the world with the speed of its wind, at the will of Lord Sri Hari, and the same with the fire/Lord Agni does not burn down the world with its heat. The Maya/illusion of the Mayapathi is three kinds such as Sathvik, Rajasik, and Thamasik, which contribute to Mahathaththva, and the Ahamkar originated from the Mahathaththva, and the Ahamkara is three kinds as Sathvik, Rajasik, and Thamasik. 1) The mind and the twelve Karma and Gnanendhriyas/sensory organs originated from the Sathvik Ahamkara, 2) and the expansion of the sensory orangs from the Rajasik Ahamkara, 3)  and the infinite sounds, touches, passion, smell, and appearances/Thanmathra/ initiated from the Thamasik Ahamkara. These Thanmathra created the Panchathaththva/Prithvi, Vayu, Jalam, Theja, and Agni/Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Ether/. Oh! Mother, listen to me carefully, an ‘Egg’ shaped Bhramanda/Universe was initiated from these Mahath Thaththva- Sun, Moon, Agni, Vayu/Ahamkar – Rajasik, Thamasik and Sathvik/ mind -Sathvik/ sensory organs/Thanmathra – Shabdha, Sparsha, Rasa, Gandha and Roopa. Oh! Mother, the ‘Egg’ was lifeless in the beginning, so Lord Bhrama prayed at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, the Egg is lifeless without your grace, kindly shower your compassionate grace on the ‘Egg’/Bhramanda and make it lively.” Lord Sri Hari smiled at Lord Bhrama and invoked his impenetrable strength in it, the sensory organs started functioning, and fourteen worlds initiated from the Bhramanda, the intellectuals address that '’Egg’ as Viratswaroopa, and the ‘life’ invested by Lord Sri Hari is called ‘Adhipurusha’ who is free from the Maya and the three attributes/Rajasik, Thamasik, and Sathvik.  Oh! Mother, the lifeless ‘Egg’ is Maya of Mayapathi, is infinite and impermanent as well. The darkness of ignorance won’t allow Jeeva to recognize the absolute truth. The ignorant Jeeva believes the infinite worldly matters, possession, wealth, richness, money, fame, children, wife, companion, and relatives as ‘Real’, in fact, they are ‘unreal’ like the person smiles and cries in the state of ‘dream’. In this way, the intellectuals/Bhramavadhi/ Athmajjyani, consider worldly matters as unreal, and Bhramam is real/Bhrama Sathyam Jagath Mithya.  The water-filled in the number of pots reflects the image of the Sun, but the Sun can be only ‘One’, the reflections can be countless. In this way, the Prana vested in all the creatures/ Jeeva is ‘One’/Oneness-in-All, it has no color, caste, religion, belief, appearance, etc. The mud pot created out of mud breaks and unites with the mud, and the Sun remains the same. In the same manner, the body ruins but the Prana/soul/Athman remains the same, therefore the Veda and Scriptures highly eulogize the soul as Ajanma/unborn, and Amar/eternal. The knowledge-self/soul/Athma removes the ignorance born out of illusion and interest in worldly matters, until that period of time, the Jeeva should not abandon the practice of Varnna/Bhramana, Kshathriya, Vaishya, and Shudra, and Ashrama Dharma/Bhramacharya, Grihastha, Sanyasa, and Vanaprastha."

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of the association with the Sathpurusha, Mahathma, and noble souls – The conversation between Sage Kapila and Devi Devahoothi

Chapter – 283-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of the association with the Sathpurusha, Mahathma, and noble souls – The conversation between Sage Kapila and Devi Devahoothi

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “ Oh! Mortals, listen to the prayer of Devi Devahoothi to her son Sage Kapila in his lecture about the knowledge of self/Athmajjyan."

Devi Devahoothi speaks “ Oh! Vathsa/son, Oh! Prabho, you have burned down my ignorance into ashes, kindly spread light into the Bhramajjyana/Athmavidhya/Athmajjana and the sufferings of cycles of birth and death.”

Sage Kapila replied “Oh! Mother, I shall describe the knowledge of Bhramam, that would liberate the Jeeva from the grief and sufferings of worldly existence. I shall describe the characteristics of the Mukthapurusha/renounced soul/liberated souls/ so that it would burn down all your qualms. Oh! Mother, the liberated souls are the ones who perceive the supreme Bhramam as Oneness-in-All, they perceive that supreme Bhramam in all the living and non-living things in the Universe and contemplate upon ME/Kapila is an incarnation of Lord Sri Hari/, in this way, they get freed from the grief of dualities/happiness and sorrow, gain and loss, pain and joy, honor, and disgrace, etc. Oh! Mother, the unfortunate ones drenched in worldly matters forget my presence in their body as well in the entire Universe, always seek pleasure in the association of children, wife, relatives, possession, companion, relatives, richness, fame, money, wealth, etc. and constantly undergo sufferings and grief, finally shove to hell afterlife. The association with the Sathpurusha/saintly, Sadhu, and Mahathma would multiply the supreme knowledge, and the association with the ignorant, and wicked people would bring dullness and disgrace.  Therefore, be wise to choose to be in the association of the Santh Mahathma noble souls to get rid of the sufferings of worldly existence, and cycles of birth and death. The association with the noble souls would transform the Jeeva to live in complete harmony and peace by perceiving that all-pervasive supreme Bhramam /oneness-in-All, perceive that Paramathma in the living and non-things in this Universe and be truthful, kind, and loving. Oh! Mother, the Santh, Mahathma, noble souls/Sadhu are the ones who abandoned the interest in worldly matters, and free from the impurities of lust, desire, ego, jealousy, pride, anger, Ahamkara and Mamakara, these liberated souls are free from the sufferings of dualities such as heat and cold, sorrow and happiness, Raga/love and dwesh/hatred, etc. These saintly men do not perform activities for their pleasure or any fruitful results. The Asadhu/wicked are always driven by jealousy, pride, anger, ego, lust, desire, etc. which would destroy the serenity of the mind. The attire of a saffron robe as a Sadhu/saint won’t make a person saintly/ Santh. The Sathpurusha and Mahathma constantly sing in praise of the virtues of Lord Sri Hari, and it would multiply the devotion in the listeners, eventually, they achieve nearness to God/Bhagavathprapthi, and ultimately, they get freed from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence and repeated births as well.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Ignorance is the cause of grief - The attachment to worldly matters causes grief, otherwise no one can cause grief to another

Chapter – 282-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Ignorance is the cause of grief -The attachment to worldly matters causes grief, otherwise  no one can cause grief to another

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, you have forgotten your real nature/Athama is Paramathma, like the dog trapped in the mirror maze, it keeps wandering aimlessly witnessing its own image, drenched in an illusion that there are several dogs around him. Oh! Mortals, you have forgotten that Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam resides as a soul in you, and the increased interest in worldly matters of possession, richness, fame, money, children, wealth, wife, companion, and relatives has driven you afar from the supreme Bhramam, as the musk deer wander for fragrance forgetting the fragrant musk stored on its navel. Oh! Mortals, your increased interest in worldly matters has thrown you in constant grief and agony like the King dreamt of being a pauper and caught by the thieves in the Jungle, he cannot escape from the momentary trepidation unless he wakes up from the dream. Oh! Mortals, your illusion has driven you insane, like the elephant fighting with its mirror image, the lion dived into the well at its own mirror image in the deep dark well. Oh! Mortals, your attachment to possession, wealth, fame, richness, children, wife, money, relatives, companions, etc, has thrown you into unending misery, like the monkey/Jeeva/ greed of dhal/Channa/worldly matters/ shoved its hand inside the mud pot with a small mouth/Samsara/, later it finds difficult to take out its hand because it has already grabbed a fistful of Channa from the pot, and the pot of mouth is too small to take out the fistful Channa. So, the monkey keeps fighting to get the hands out of the pot, by the time the hunter/death/ arrives and gets hold of the monkey. The fate of the monkey/Jeeva, caught by the hunter/death/becomes miserable, it has to dance door-to-door/rebirth. Oh! Mortals, the attachment to worldly matters, and thereby sufferings and grief of worldly existence are the result of ignorance, no one can cause grief to you, and the result of your grief was the attachment to worldly matters.  Oh! Mortals, the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam/Sacchidhanandha/Sath-Chith-Anandha/eternal-pure-bliss/ Swaroopa Paramathma resides as a soul, the lack of knowledge of self and the attachment to worldly matters is the cause for your grief.”

Chapter – 281-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The significance of knowledge of self/Athmavidhya/Bhramavidhya

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, it is impossible to achieve the serenity of the mind without the knowledge of self/soul/Bhramavidhya/ body and soul are different, the body is perishable and soul is imperishable, which is supreme bliss. The lack of knowledge of the Paramathma Parambhramam resides as a soul, persuades the Jeeva to soak in illusion, like the musk deer wanders aimlessly in search for fragrance, without the knowledge that it has the store of rich fragrance on its navel, the humans get attached to the worldly matters of sounds, touch, passion, appearances, and smell of infinite nature, and constantly throws into three kinds of grief, such as 1) grief caused by natural calamities, earthquake, wildfire, flood, famine, drought, epidemics, etc. 2) grief caused by aging, illnesses, fear of death, and separation from beloved ones 3) grief caused by the attachment to possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. in their absence. It would be like the ignorant person looking at his mirror image, and wiping off the ink patches on his face in the mirror, which is a failed attempt to remove the stain on the face. Oh! Mortals, the lecture on the knowledge of self cannot bring the Athmanubhoothi/experience of bliss unless it was put into practice, like the earthen lamp filled with oil and cotton was not lightened with the match stick can’t shed light and disperse the darkness. Oh! Mortals, The knowledge of self would remove the impurities of the mind, such as lust, ego, desire, anger, pride, jealousy, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, eventually, the desire for infinite worldly matters like the darkness of ignorance would disappear. Oh! Mortals,  the life lived without the knowledge of self is futile, like the blind cannot experience the brightness of the sun. The all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul is an eternal bliss, and it is impossible to achieve that bliss without the knowledge of self, the fortunate are the ones who achieve permanent bliss and get rid of interest in worldly matters and repeated births.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The Prana/soul keeps the body alive and it is the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, Chiththa, Ahamkara, sensory organs etc.

Chapter – 280-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The Prana/soul keeps the body alive and it is the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, Chiththa, Ahamkara, sensory organs etc.

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul that is primeval, eternal, pure, unblemished, free from dualities and has no death or birth. The supreme Bhramam is personified as Lord Shyamsundar.  Oh! Mortals, envisage the omnipresent Lord of the Universe and its living and non-living things/Viratswaroopa. The entire Bhramanda, mountains, oceans, sun, moon, stars, planets, fourteen worlds/Athala, Vithala, Suthala, Thalathal, Mahathal, Rasathal, Pathal, etc., as his body parts. The Supreme Lord is the cause of the Universe and its living and non-living things, he is the creator, preserver, and destroyer as well. The supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva and is the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, Chiththa, Ahamkara, Prana, Karma, and Gnanendhriyas, and once the Prana/soul/vital air leaves the body, it is addressed as a corpse.”
