Chapter – 6  - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra 81 – 104

 

Oh! Bharathashabha, the wise/intelligent/noble/Yogi are the one who has the highest of the knowledge about the human body which is the gathering of nine gates/Navadhvarapuri, three pillars, five essential elements, and the soul witness Athman/soul.  Oh! Dhritarashtra there are ten types of people who are ignorant of Dharma, they are 1) person who indulges in intoxicating drinks/spirituous products, 2) careless person 3) Insane 4) lethargic/dull 5) angry person 6) hungry person 7) the person who is in a hurry 8) fearful person 9) Lobhi and 10) Kami/lustful. Hence, an intelligent person should abandon these types of people in their life, and it was clearly stated in a conversation between King Prahladha and the Bhramin Sudhanvan. Oh! Rajan, the best King is the one who 1) is free from the Kama and Krodha 2) King who wisely distribute the wealth among the needy 3) intelligent 4) knowledgeable 5) performs the task with discipline without any procrastination. Oh! Rajan, wise rulers achieve admiration and auspiciousness with their exemplary nature such as 1) build great faith and integrity among the Praja 2) punishes the culprits without mercy 3) thoroughly aware of the kind of punishment should be imposed upon the sinners 4) merciful to the people who deserve it. Oh! Rajan, a valorous person is the one who 1) does not keep enmity with the powerful 2) do not underestimate even the weakest enemies 3) tackle the enemies with great strategies 4) and attack the enemies only at the appropriate time. Oh! Rajan, a successful King would win over his enemies 1) do not lose self-control during the hours of crisis 2) work-hard and do not give space for discrepancies 3) withstand the difficulties and grief with great endurance 4) perfect control over sense. Oh! Rajan, 1) The person who does not indulge in an illicit relationship with the wives of others 2) person who does not leave home and family 3) the person who is not in the association of sinners 4) person who is free from impurities like ego, pride, jealous, selfishness, 5) person who is free from the habit of stealing money or wealth of others 6) the person who is free from the habit of the consumption of spirituous products, lives happily in this world. Oh! Bharatharshabha, a Gnani/wise  1) do not chase after Purusharththa 2) Truthful 3) Do not engage in conflicts 4) do not react on grace or disgrace, good or evil, grief or happiness, etc. Oh! Rajan, these types of people remains respectful always 1) People who do not keep enmity with others 2) kind-hearted 3) do not engage in the fight or conflicts during the hours of weakness 4) the person who is freed from pride 5) person who patiently faces conflicts. Oh! Rajan, these types of people are beloved to all, 1) the person who is free from pride 2) person free from self-praising and complaining others 3) Person who does not speak harshly even the times of annoyed. Oh! Rajan, the superior qualities in a wise are 1) does not keep enmity or friendliness 2) neither proud nor humble, 3) do not over-act during the hours of grief or happiness. Oh! Rajan, I shall add a few more superior qualities 1) person who does not over-act to the situations, be it sorrow or happiness 2) person who does not overjoy in other’s trouble 3) person who does not regret on the charities performed 4) a person who does not speak highly of his charities. Oh! Rajan, the person remains respectful always 1) If he follows the customary practices, according to the country, time, and zone 2) person who are keen and enthusiastic to learn the languages and customs of other countries 3) person who thoroughly understand good and evil. Oh! Rajan, an intelligent person is the one who is 1) free from ignorance, dullness, pride, sinful deeds, enmity to King and powerful people, crookedness, fighting spirit 2) free from the enmity to the powerful in the society  3) person who does engage conflicts with the drunkard, insane, and wicked people. Oh! Rajan, the deities showers an abundance of grace upon people who sincerely follow 1) worship of deities, preceptors, and devotees of Lord 2) people who have perfect self-control 3) people who engage in pure deeds 4) people who engage in auspicious deeds, atonement, and sincerely follow the customary practices. Oh! Rajan, an intelligent person is the one who 1) engages in a conjugal relationship with the people of equivalent status, and Varnna, 2) person who keeps companionship with the people of equivalent status and nature 3) person who keeps conversation and exchange things with people of equivalent status and interests 4) people who admire the wise, person of superior knowledge and sincerely follow them. Oh! Rajan, a person with self-control remains free from afflictions, the nature of them are 1) The person who shares abundantly and consumes a little 2) person who is hard-working and sleeps a little 3) person who is willing to give away even to the strangers who are in need 4) person who have perfect control over sense. Oh! Rajan, a person who plan the strategies with utmost sincerity and dedication, keep it as highly confidential, and performs the tasks meticulously as planned earlier would achieve success in all endeavors. Oh! Rajan, a virtuous person shines like a precious gem among his/her relatives, they are 1) people who are extremely kind and sympathetic towards all the creatures without any personal motive 2) truthful 3) talks pleasantly 4) people who perform an abundance of charity 5) and pure-hearted. Oh! Rajan, a virtuous person feel the shame of his own impurities, even though he is kind, benevolent, pure-hearted, this kind of person shines like Surya.”

 


Vidura concludes “Oh! Bharatharshabha, the five sons born to King Pandu, who was died of a curse, represent five senses, Oh! Ambikasutha/Ambikeya, Oh! Dhritarashtra, these five sons of Pandu have brought up by you and sent to achieve the greatest knowledge in Shastra and usage of armaments, they are extremely grateful and sincerely follow your command.  Oh! Narendra, kindly gives away the share of the Kingdom they deserve and live happily with them. Oh! Rajan, if you do so, none will criticize or none of the Manushya or deities would blame you.”

Chapter – 5  - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra 62 – 80

 


Vidura speaks “Oh! Bharatharshabha, there are four deeds which provide fear and dreadful results, if it was not performed with utmost devotion and concentration, are 1) The fire sacrifices/Agnihothram without devotion or dedication 2,) The vow of silence 3) Adhyayanam/learning of scriptures and sacred texts, 4) and  fire sacrifices. Oh! Rajan, there are five Agni’s should be preserved and served with all efforts 1) father 2) Mother 3) Athma, 4) Agni, and 5) preceptor. The person who worships the five categories people would earn admiration and Shreyas 1)the worship of  Deities 2) performance of ancestral rites/Pithrus, 3) worship of humans by offerings charities, 4) serving Bhikshu/Sanyasin/Vipra and the protection of Go 5) and serving the guests. Oh! Rajan, there are five categories of people you will meet wherever you go 1) friends 2) enemies 3) people neither your friends nor enemies 4) people who give shelter to you 5) the people who seek shelter from you. Oh! Rajan, if any of the five sense organs of human remain uncontrolled, the intellect of the Jeeva gets wasted, like the milk filled in the leather pouch that has a hole in it. Oh! Rajan, the person who seeks welfare and fortune should abandon these six habits 1) excessive sleep 2) laziness 3) Bhayam/fear 4) Krodham/anger 5) drowsiness 6) and procrastination. Oh! Rajan, there are six types of people should be abandoned, like the ferry shattered in the middle of the ocean are 1) The preceptor who does not give lectures on Shastra 2) The priest who does not practice Veda Adhyayanam 3) The King who is not capable to protect his Praja 4) The wife who does not speak pleasing words 5) The cowherd who is not willing to take the cows for grazing in the fields 6) Napitha/hair-doer who is not willing to stay in the village and would like to move to the woods.   Oh! Bharatharshabha, there are six virtues should be protected always and they are 1) Truthfulness, 2) Dhanam/performance of charities 3) hard-working nature 4) free from jealous 5) endurance and 6) Enthusiasm. Oh! Rajan, there  are six types of comforts in this world 1) Permanent income 2) free from ailments 3) devoted wife 4) Chaste and virtuous wife 5) virtuous son and 6) fruitful knowledge. Oh! Rajan, the person who has perfect control over the impurities of Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, and Mathshcharya, would remain untouched by the sins, and will not undergo afflictions. Oh! Rajan, there are six types of people who depend on each other 1) The thieves chases after the careless people 2) female lover depends on male partner 3) The patients depend on the physician 4) The priests depend on the Yajamana/wealthy people who are prepared to conduct the spiritual rite 5) The King depends on the people who are constantly engages in conflicts 6) The scholars depend on the ignorant people. Oh! Rajan, there are six types of things which easily gets destroyed if it was not taken care properly 1)Cows 2) Sevadharmam/service to preceptors and the devotees of the Lord 3) Agriculture 4) wife 5) knowledge and 6) wealth of a Shudra. Oh! Rajan, there are six types of people get ignored after the service is received and given 1) The disciple who has earned knowledge from the preceptor 2) A married person discard mother after the marriage 3) man discard a woman after having pleasing relationship with her and after fulfilling his desire 4) The person who received help from the other at the time of crisis 5) The person who has crossed the river in a ferry, forgets the ferryman 6) Patients forgets their doctor after receiving a cure for the illnesses. Oh! Rajan, there are six things which could provide welfare to Jeeva 1) good health 2) living without debt 3) living without undertaking long journeys 4) constant association with the Sajjanas 5) person who engages in self-employment 6) living a life without anxieties and fear. Oh! Bharatharshabha, there are six types of people undergoes afflictions always, they are 1) person who depends on others wealth 2) jealous 3) hatred 4) unsatisfied 5) angry person 6) and doubtful person. Oh! Rajan, there seven types of activities should be avoided by a wise ruler, which could bring permanent grief 1) hunting expedition 2) association with females 3) gambling 4) consumption of spirituous ingredients 5) harsh talks 6) merciless punishments 7) and improper utilization of wealth. Oh! Bharatharshabha, there are eight visible signs of a person who is going to meet permanent destruction, therefore one should avoid these eight activities, they are 1) Hatred towards the Vipras/Bhramins and opposing religious and spiritual rites, 2) creates obstacles to the performance of rites, 3) taking away the properties of Vipra, 4) treating them as enemies, 5)  killing Vipras and taking pleasure in insulting them publicly,  6) feeling jealous of praising them, 7)  Hesitate to invite them to conduct the religious and spiritual rite and 8) ignoring their requirements in the performance of rites. Oh! Rajan, there are eight tasks which provide immense bliss to a doer, therefore these eight tasks are considered as the source of welfare and happiness too. They are 1) meeting with the closest companions 2) sudden arrival of wealth through proper means 3) praising the virtues of sons 4) feeling exhausted by the husband and wife at the end of perfect physical relationship 5) having a pleasing conversation with the beloved people at the proper hours 6) respect and admiration in the society 7) fulfilling one’s own tasks and desires 8) earning fame and respect from society.”

Vidura speaks “Oh! Bharatharshabha/born in the illustrious clan of Bharatha, I shall describe the characteristics of the intellectuals 1 ) They perform tasks which are appropriate to their strength/prowess 2) They perform the tasks with utmost sincerity 3) They do not ignore or underrate any tasks 4) Intellectuals understands things immediately are studious, 5) They listen patiently 6) They do not fall for desire, but make all the intelligent effort to undertake the tasks and achieve the same 7) They do not interfere in others personal matters, unless and until they are requested 8) They do not chase after impossible things 9) They do not grieve over the loss 10) They do not waste time 11) They do not yearn to perform adventurous things in life 12 ) They do not leave the things in the middle or halfway, patiently wait to finish the tasks 13) They will have perfect control over sense. Oh! Bharatharshabha, 14) Intellectuals take pleasure in Sathkarma/righteous deeds, 15) they perform tasks for the Universal welfare 16) they do not disrespect virtuous people or deeds 17) the intellectuals remain calm at the time of respect and disrespect, do not over-joy or get disappointed in both the circumstances. 18) The intellectuals remain calm and serene like the pond close to the watercourse of Ganga. 19) The intellectuals will have a thorough knowledge of destructible nature of Prakrithi/nature and living and non-living things and material matters and bondage etc. 20) they will have a thorough knowledge of the performance of deeds/spiritual and religious rites, and their inter-related concepts and its consequences etc. 21) they will easily understand the nature of humans who strive hard for their selfish motive. Oh! Rajan, the intellectuals are 22) eloquent, 23) will have thorough knowledge in various fields of knowledge 24) enriched with farsightedness 25) extremely talented 26) will have profound knowledge in scriptures and sacred texts.”

 


Vidura continues “Oh! Bharatharshabha, the intellectuals do not overrule the disciplines, righteousness, moralities, and virtues. I shall describe the nature of an ignorant to you.  1) The person who has no knowledge shastras or Puranas, but take great pride of birth in the illustrious clan 2) The person who is poor but takes great pleasure in giving away 3) The person who perform various rites and tasks for personal benefit. 4) The person who discards his own duties and responsibilities and jump into the affairs of others 5) the person who use unwarranted means to fulfill the task of the companion. 6) The person who falls for the unwarranted needs 7) The person who abandon the duties and responsibilities prescribed for him/her 8) The person who speaks ill of the powerful 9) The person who assumes the enemy as his friend 10) The person who contemptuous towards his well-wisher and engages in the heinous act against them 11) The person who follow immoral deeds. 12) The person who does not perform the ancestral rite 13) The person who does not conduct the worship of the deities 14) The person who does not earn good companions 15) The person who show up in places where uninvited 16) The person who serve opinions without asking for it 17) The person who keeps trust in the people who are least trustworthy. 18) The person who blames others for his own mistakes 19) the person who gets triggered, even though no strength in him to act 20) the person who is not aware of his own talents or skills 21) the person who does not strive for Purusharththa 22) the person who strives to achieve impossible. Oh! Rajan, 23) the fool punishes the innocent 24) respects the ignorant and 26) depend on the misers and wicked.  Oh! Bharathashrabha, an intelligent person who has achieved the supreme wisdom, and immense wealth, do not take pride in it. How did we name a person who uses the entire wealth for his own comforts and luxuries, and take great pleasure in it without utilizing for the welfare of his own people?”
