Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter -  3 - 4

Chapter – 12 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 61 – 67

Vidura speaks “Oh! Rajan, the preceptor contributes disciples with good self-control and discipline to the world, the King of the country is responsible to punish the wicked and put an end to immoral deeds, and the sins committed secretly without anyone’s knowledge would be definitely taken care by Yama. Oh! Rajan, do not enquire about the origin of Rishis, rivers, clan, Mahatmas, and the reason for the absence of chastity in the woman. Oh! Bharatharshabha, the Kshatriya who protects the twice-born and Cows, serves and worships them, and gives away an abundance of charities for the performance of religious and spiritual rites, would rule the Kingdom wisely for several years and finally achieve the heavenly abode. Oh! Rajan, the valorous person, learned one, and a person who finds pleasure in the selfless service would be revered highly in this world, they are capable to cultivate golden flowers on the Earth. Oh! Rajans, the Karma performed with the intellect are revered highly/Uththama, Karmas performed with the hands and thighs are considered as Madhyama, and Karmas performed carrying ingredients on the head is called Adhamadhamam.  Oh! Bharatharshabha, how could you envision the progress of the Kingdom of Hasthinapur leaving under the custody of your dull-minded sons? How did you achieve the welfare of the Kingdom of Hasthinapur and the happiness of its people, after leaving the regime to Duryodhana, Shakuni, Karna, and dull-minded Dhusshasana? Oh! Bharatha, the sons of Pandu are grateful to you, they have great respect and love for you, and they highly revered you as their father, therefore it is your responsibility to show affection and kindness towards them like your sons.”

Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter -  3 -3

Chapter – 11 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 42 – 60

Vidura speaks “Oh! Bharatharshabha, the gold shoved to the blazing fire turns to exquisite ornaments, the discipline, sincerity and dedication in the work earns a good reputation, good character in a person attracts everyone, the amount of fearlessness came to know at the times of troubles, the sufferings of poverty makes a person amiable and courageous, the dangerous situations in life make the companion turns to the enemy. Oh! Rajan, Jara/aging destroys the loveliness of the Jeeva, the uncontrollable desires destroys endurance, the Mrithyu/death takes away the Prana, jealous destroys the Dharmanishta of a Jeeva, the anger destroys the auspiciousness, the association with the Dhurjjana destroys the character of a person, lustfulness destroys the shame and pride destroy everything owned by a person. Oh! Rajan, I shall describe how the welfare and auspiciousness derives from the Sathkarma work in the life of a Jeeva, it multiplies with the hard work and discipline, and it enhances the skills and perseverance, and it deepens with the self-control. Oh! Rajan, superintelligence, birth in an illustrious clan, good self-control, knowledge in various fields, valor, limited speech, the performance of charity, and gratitude makes a person shine in the world. These eight qualities get firm and well-known when the person was honored and admired by the King. Oh! Rajan, I shall describe the eight qualities which would provide the heavenly pleasures while living on the Earth, and four of the qualities innate in the Sajjanas and the other four qualities that would enhance with the regular practices. 1)Yajjam, 2) Dhanam, 3) Adhyayanam 4) Tapasya are the innate nature of Sajjanas, and the other four virtues multiply with the regular practices are 1) Self-control 2)Sathyam 3) sincerity, 4) and kindness, these are the qualities are practiced by these Sajjanas throughout their lives. Oh! Rajan, there are ten virtues that would bring the attainment of heaven 1 )Sathyam 2) loveliness 3) knowledge in Shastra, 4)pure knowledge 5) birth in illustrious clan 6) good virtues 7) courage 8) wealth 9) valor 10) ability to engage in long and pleasing conversations. Oh! Rajan, a person who commits sin would definitely undergo afflictions, and the person who performs righteous deeds would enjoy the fruit of the same. The person who engages in the repeated sinful deeds would meet the destruction of intellect; once the virtues and intellect are lost the Jeeva permanently forces to commit the sin.  The performance of righteous /pious deeds would enhance the intellect of the Jeeva, which would protect the Jeeva from the sinful deeds. Oh! Rajan, a person who is swollen with pride and jealous, a person who finds pleasure in insulting others, and a person who engages in constant conflicts and arguments, would undergo afflictions. Oh! Rajan, the person who is freed from jealous and pride, and sincerely follow the pious deeds, and intelligent would not undergo troubles, live a happy and comfortable life. Oh! Rajan, an intelligent person constantly strive to achieve knowledge from different sources is the scholars, these kinds of people will have a thorough knowledge of Dharma and Adharma, so they strive for Dharma and Arththa to achieve comfort and happiness. Oh! Rajan, a person who wants to spend the night peaceful would finish all the work in the day, in the same manner, the intelligent would make sure to store the grains and necessities for the rainy season. Oh! Rajan, a person who wants to live a comfortable life in the latter years of age would make sure to work during youthful days with farsightedness. In the same manner, the Jeeva should perform righteous deeds while on the Earth to achieve a comfortable stay afterlife as well /life in the Paraloka.  Oh! Rajan, the intellectuals respect the grains that easily get digested, the wife who has lost youthfulness, the warrior who has achieved victory in the battlefield, and well-known Tapasvis and ascetics. Oh! Rajan, the religious and spiritual rites, and various pious deeds performed with the money earned in immoral ways would not bring fruitful results; moreover, it would bring unresolved issues in the life of the doer.”

Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter - 3 -2

Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter -  3

Chapter – 10 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra 21 - 41

Sudhanva spoke “Oh! Prahlada, I have received Jalam/water, Madhuparkkam at the entry point of your palace, I have a few questions required correct answers from you, who is superior Bhramana or Virochana?”

Prahlada spoke “Oh! Bhramin, Virochana is my only son, and you both are present before me. How could I answer your question when both of you are in conflict?”

Sudhanva speaks “ Oh! Rajan, you can give all your wealth and possessions of cows to your son Virochana, I need a truthful answer to my question on which we are arguing with each other so long.”

Prahlada speaks “Oh! Sudhanva, shall I ask you something? What would happen to a person who intentionally gives the wrong answers to the questions?”

Sudhanva speaks “Oh! Rajan,  1) the person who intentionally lies to the questions asked would undergo sufferings like the woman who was rejected by her husband in the night hours, 2) the liar would feel dejected like the person who lost in the gambling, and 3) the liar would feel humiliated like the person who worked so hard all day was rejected to enter into the village.  4) The person who lies constantly would earn a large number of enemies; 5)  a person who lies to get hold of an animal would commit the sin of descending four ancestors from heaven.  6) The people who lie for achieving the possession of cow would commit the sin of descending the ten Pithrus form heaven.  7) The person who lies for achieving the possession of horse would commit the sin of descending hundreds of Pithrus from heaven.  8) The person who lies for pleasing the human would commit the sin of descending thousands of Pithrus from heaven. 9) The person who lies for the achievement of gold would cause to fall down all his Pithrus and Pithrus in the future from heaven.  10) The person who lies for the achievement of possession of the land would destroy the entire thing; therefore one should not stand false witness or lie for the achievement of land in immoral ways.”

Prahlada speaks “Oh! Virochana, Sage Angiras is well-known for his knowledge in Shashthras and scriptures, therefore he is prominent than me. Sudhanva is highly knowledgeable and has profound knowledge in Shashthras, his mother is superior to your mother, therefore you cannot compete with the twice-born Sudhanva, therefore Virochana, and you have lost before the Bhramin Sudhanva. Oh! Sudhanva, I shall request you kindly return the Prana of my son Virochana to me.”

Sudhanva speaks “Oh! Prahlada, you have sincerely followed the Dharma, you did not lie to me after witnessing the threat to the Prana of your only son. Therefore, I am returning the Prana of your dearest son. I have returned your only son Virochana to you, now let him wash my feet before the attractive woman Keshini.”

Vidura spoke “Oh! Bharatharshabha, do not lie for the possession of Kingdom and stately luxurious, and causes to heave all your ancestors and the entire clan to complete destruction. Do not cause the destruction of your people and your subjects due to the love for your children. Oh! Rajan, deities are not like cow-herds who hold a stick to protect their cows, the deities have given intellect to human to protect themselves from the crisis. The person who is focused and concentrates on the welfare of all would achieve success in all endeavors. The person who lives in excuses and wickedness could not protect the Veda, like the birds discard its babies immediately after they attain wings to fly. Oh! Rajan, Jeeva should abandon the following sinful ways of living, to achieve Athmasakshathkara/realization of ‘self’ and knowledge of Paramathma 1 ) consumption of intoxicating drinks 2) conflicts with people 3) enmity with a large number of people 4) conflicts with the relatives 5) ungrateful to country and its leader 6) domestic abuses and violence’s etc.  Oh! Rajan, I shall specify the seven types of people who are not qualified to be a true witness 1) the person who is expert in Samudhrikashasthram/Lakshanashasthra 2) a thief who has become businessman 3) crooked person 4) physician 5) enemy 6) companion 7) person who has the habit of praising others. Oh! Rajan, there are four deeds which are highly propitious, if it was followed with sincerity and dedication, otherwise it would create extreme distress to the performer, they are 1)Agnihothram 2) vow of silence 3) learning scriptures and Veda/Adhyayanam 4) The performance of fire sacrifices/Yajjam. Oh! Bharatharshabha, I shall narrate the deeds which brings Bhramahathya sins 1) The person who set fire to the house 2) the person who injects poison 3) person who eats the meal of a thief 4) Person who sells Somarasa/intoxicating drinks 5) person who creates powerful arrows 6) Astrologer 7) companion turned to enemy 8) person who approaches the wife of others for physical pleasure 9) women who kill the fetus 10) person who approaches the wife of Guru through immoral ways 11) Bhramin who consume intoxicating drinks 12) Person who talks harshly 13) cruel person 14) disbeliever in religion and sacred texts 15) Person who disrespects the Veda and Vedic scholars 16) person who lives on bribe 17) person who is removed from the society or from the particular sect  18) Wealthiest unwilling to spend money on spiritual and religious rites 19) Person who kills the person who has taken shelter in him. These categories of people are considered as grave sinners of Bhramahathya.”

Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter - 3 -1

Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter -  3

Chapter – 9 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra 1 -20

Dhritarashtra speaks “Oh! Mahabudhdhe, Vidura kindly continue to speak about Dharma and Arththa I would like to hear more about, I am not satisfied yet, you are brilliantly narrating the same.”

Vidura speaks “Oh! Bharatharshabha, a  holy dip in the Theertha and interact with the people with utmost sincerity without any crookedness are highly propitious acts, but  I would suggest the sincerity, honesty, and compassion are the commendable virtues of a Jeeva. Oh! Rajan kindly treats all your children/Kauravas and Pandavas with sincerity and compassion, then you would achieve respect and honor while living on the Earth, and will attain heavenly abode afterlife. The Jeeva would achieve heavenly pleasures and honor as long as his fame and goodness were highly spoken on the Earth. Oh! Rajan, I shall describe an interesting conversation that took place between Virochana and Bhramin Sudhanva before the most beautiful woman Keshini, which would affirm the above truth.”

Vidura continues “Oh! Rajan, there was a stunningly gorgeous woman Keshini, desired to choose a flawless husband in the Swayamvara. The Dhaithya King Virochana was present in the assembly to attain Keshini as his wedded wife. Keshini noticed the presence of the King of demons Virochana and spoke “Oh! Demon King Virochana, Bhramin, or the demon who is superior among the two? Why did Sudhanva is not deserved to be in the assembly?”

Virochana spoke “ We have born from Prajapathi, therefore we consider ourselves as the superior, the entire world is under our control, therefore there is no need to respect deities and Brahmins.” Keshini spoke “ Oh! Virochana, I will meet Sudhanva and you in the assembly.” Virochana spoke “Oh! Bhadhre, I will follow your opinion, you will meet me and Sudhanva and in the assembly tomorrow morning.”

Vidura speaks “Oh! Rajan, the next morning Sudhanva and Virochana arrived in the place of Keshini.  Soon, Keshini rose from her seat and received the twice-born Sudhanva with respect and offered him a seat and offered Argyam and Padhyam.  Sudhanva was asked to be seated with Virochana was refused and spoke “Oh! Virochana, you are the King of demons, seated on the magnificent gem decorated throne, I can touch it and feel the same, but I am not supposed to sit with you. If I take a seat with you in that crown, you would be considered as equal to me, there will not be any difference between King and Vipra.”

Virochana said “Oh! Bhramin, a grass mattress, or wooden plank, or skin of antelope would be suitable for you to be seated; therefore you do not deserve to be seated with me in the magnificent gem decorated crown.” Sudhanva said “Oh! Virochana, I shall describe who are qualified to be seated together, 1) Bhramins of the same age and equally qualified 2) Kshatriya, Vaishyas, and Shudras are qualified to be seated together. Oh! Virochana, your father was used to express boundless respect by sitting down from the seat where I have seated now. You have brought up in the home of stately comforts, therefore you do not know about all these.”

Virochana spoke “Oh! Sudhanva, I am not satisfied with your answers, therefore I shall pledge all that wealth of cows, gold ornaments, possessions, and horses, of mine to a scholar, and will get an appropriate answer.” Sudhanva said “Oh! Virochana, you need not pledge your wealth and possessions, we would pledge our Prana and clear your doubts from an illustrious scholar.”

Virochana said “ Oh! Sudhanva, what’s the need of pleading our Prana, what would I do standing before the deities and humans, I cannot stand before the deities or humans.” Sudhanva spoke “Oh! Virochana, we do not approach deities or Vipras, we will meet your father Prahlada, who is virtuous and righteous as well.  He never speaks untruth, not even for his own son.”

Vidura spoke “Oh! Rajan, thus Virochana and Sudhanva proceed to the palace of Prahladha.” Prahlada after meeting a Bhramin and the King Virochana, spoke “I have not seen two angry serpents together moving towards one direction. Oh! Virochana, I have not seen you walking with a Bhramin in my life, are you traveling together? Do you have good relations with the Bhramin Sudhanva?”

Virochana spoke “Oh! Thatha, Oh! Prahlada, I have no relation with the twice-born Sudhanva. We have pledged our Prana to find the truth, I shall ask you one question, kindly do not hesitate to answer truthfully.”

Prahlada spoke “Oh! Bhramin, Sudhanva you are welcome to our place. Oh! Attendants, bring Madhuparka/mixture of honey, ghee, curd, milk to offer Sudhanva. Oh! Bhramin, kindly accept our veneration, I would like to offer a good quality of cow as a charity to you. Kindly accept that too.”
