Sri Subramanya Dhandakam – Lyrics and meanings

I shall repeatedly prostrate before Lord Subramanya who is initiated from the eyes of Lord Hara, he is instigated from Agni, he is appeared in sacred pond Sharavana, he is Shashtikumara, he is Gangeya who is virtuous son of sacred river Ganga, he entices the heart of Goddess Gauri, he is Skandhamoorthi who dwells on the highest peaks of  Mount Himachala, he is younger brother to elephant faced Lord Ganesha, he revealed the knowledge of Pranava to Esha, thus he assumed the form of supreme preceptor.


I shall repeatedly prostrate before Lord Subramanya who has the brilliance of thousands and millions of Adithya, he have attractive six faces that spreads intense luster, he resides in the lotus like heart of passionate worshiper, he enlightens the soul with the knowledge of Athman, he is dearest son of Goddess Sri Parvathi, he is worshiped by Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, he resides in the intellect of passionate worshiper, he takes immense pleasure in exploring through mountain peaks, he is worshiped by Padma, Rama and Vani, he takes immense joy in the caress of lotus like hands of Goddess Uma, he is most charming, he is gorgeous with  most attractive limbs.


I shall repeatedly prostrate before Lord Subramanya who is devoid of Thamasic nature, desire, ego, pride, jealousy, wrathfulness etc.. Whose lotus feet is worshiped by ardent devotees, he has attractive limbs, he destroyed the demons Tharakasura, Simhamukha, Shoorapadma, Krauncha etc.. he crushed the pride of Lord Bhrama, he is affectionately brought up by six pious female Karthika, he is worshiped by illustrious Rishis, Sages and Maharishi Narada, his lotus feet are always remembered by his passionate devotees, he symbolizes ocean of mercy, he is closest associate of distressed people, he is easily attainable to pious and remains remote to people who are immersed in worldly desires, he has most pleasing disposition.


I shall repeatedly prostrate before Lord Subramanya who dwells as soul in living beings and he represents the non-living, he symbolizes nourishment to living beings, he is pure, he is devoid of properties, he is absolute truth, he have six faces, he has beautiful smile resembles to fully blossomed lotus flower, he dwells in the middle of divine Shadchakra, he resides in the lotus like heart of worshiper, he is the protector of Lord Indhra and deities, he is the destroyer of haughty Dhaithyas, he showers fleeting look of compassion on his ardent devotees, he has twelve beautiful eyes, he is decked in magnificent crown on his head, his lotus like face has great effulgence, he is decked in marvelous earrings that spreads intense luster of twelve Adithyas, he is adorned in garlands made of Kadamba flowers.


I shall repeatedly prostrate before Lord Subramanya who have broad and wide chest, his twelve arms are decorated in armlets and bangles of precious yellow metal, he has the appearance of Parashakthi, he is wielded in powerful weapon spear/Shakthi, his lotus feet are venerated by Lord Bhrama and deities, he symbolizes  Pranava ‘Om’, he has peacock as celestial vehicle, he is extremely valorous in battle field, he carries majestic flag that has the symbol of rooster, he has everlasting youth, he has most attractive physical features, he resides in the heart of righteous/pious, he is supremely gorgeous, he showers abundance of happiness to his worshiper, he is the destroyer of wicked people, he eradicates miseries and sorrows of the worshiper, he is ocean of mercy.


I shall repeatedly take refuge at the lotus feet of Lord Subramanya who is the destroyer of worldly desires, I shall repeatedly take refuge at the lotus feet of Lord Subramanya who is the protector of distressed people, he eradicates the evil effects of Kali era, he is Karthikeya who showers gaze of compassion, I shall take refuge at the lotus feet of Guha who is the ultimate resting place and safest heaven for the distressed people, his lotus feet are the only shelter place for humans.


I shall repeatedly prostrate before Shadanana who has six attractive faces, I shall repeatedly prostrate before Guha, I shall repeatedly prostrate before the lotus feet of Skandha, I shall repeatedly prostrate before Shakthihastha who is wielded in powerful spear/Shakthi, kindly protect us, I shall repeatedly prostrate before Gireesha who resides on the mountain peaks and he eradicates severe sins of the worshiper, I shall repeatedly prostrate before Suresha who is  eminent and he is mounted on celestial vehicle peacock, I shall repeatedly prostrate before supreme Lord Subramanya and earnestly pray to forgive me for all the sins committed.

Sri Subramanya Kavacham/sacred armor of Lord Subramanya was composed by Rishi Agasthya, it has Anushtup as Chandhas, presiding deity is Lord Subramanya,  Sam as Beejam, Svaha as Shakthi, Sa: as keelakam, it is recited to please Lord Subramanya.

|| Karanyasa: ||

I shall prostrate before Lord Subramanya who has golden complexion/Hiranyashareera and  offer humble salutation with my thumb finger, I shall prostrate before Lord Subramanya who is wielded in powerful bow and arrows of sugar cane stem/Ikshu Dhanurdhara and I shall offer humble salutation with my index finger,  I shall prostrate before Lord Subramanya who is initiated from the sacred pond of Sharavana/Sharavanabhavaya and I shall offer humble salutation with my middle finger, I shall prostrate before Lord Subramanya who is mounted on celestial vehicle peacocok/Shikhivahanaya and I shall offer humble salutation with my ring finger, I shall prostrate before Lord Subramanya who is wielded in powerful spear on his hand /Shakthihastha and I shall offer humble salutation with my little finger, I shall prostrate before Lord Subramanya who eradicates all kinds of perils and sorrows of worshiper/Sakaladhurithamochana, and I shall offer humble salutation with my palm and the back of palm, follows Hridhayadhinyasa.


|| Dhyanam ||


 I shall meditate upon Lord Subramanya who is initiated from the sacred pond Sharavana, he is the son of Esha, he is wielded in various weapons, he is decked in magnificent golden earrings, he has six attractive faces, his eyes has the resemblance to  blue lotus flower.


Sage Agasthya speaks “The sacred armor of Skandha is capable to protect from all the perils, it was previously narrated by Pinaki/Lord Shiva to Lord Bhrama, later I have come to know.  Oh! Naradha, carefully listen to these sacred verses which are highly propitious and beloved to all creatures, recitation of these sacred hymns will remove all the sins of the worshiper and fulfils all the desires of the worshiper, it is highly auspicious and it  symbolizes supreme wisdom and knowledge, sacred armor of Skandha is capable to eradicate all kinds of illnesses, troubles from evil spirits  with the rememberance of Lord Subramanya, it should be recited with utmost faith and devotion, it will eradicate the all the sufferings of poverty, worshiper will get all the richness, pleasures and long life with the grace of Lord Skandha.”


“I shall earnestly pray to Lord Kumara who is youthful to protect my tuft/Shikha, I shall earnestly pray to Karthikeya who is the son of Krithika to protect my head/Shirass, I shall earnestly pray to Parvathisutha who is the son of Goddess Parvathi to protect my forehead/Lalata, I shall earnestly pray to Vishaka/skandha born under the constellation  Vishakha to protect my eyebrows/Bhruyugam, I shall earnestly pray to Kraunchabhedhi who crushed the pride of Mount Krauncha to protect my eyes/lochanam, I shall earnestly pray to Shikhivahana who is mounted on celestial vehicle peacock to protect my nose/Nasa, I shall earnestly pray to Shakthidhara who is wielded in powerful weapon spear to protect my ears/Karnnam, I shall earnestly pray to Shadanana who has six faces to protect the root of ears/Karnnamoolam, I shall earnestly pray to Mahasena who have huge army of warriors to protect my cheekbones/Gandayugmam, I shall earnestly pray to Tharakanthaka who is the destroyer of demon feet/Padham, I shall earnestly pray to Kukkudadhvaja who carries majestic flag that has the symbol of Kukkuda/rooster, to protect all my limbs/Sarvangam, I shall earnestly pray to Mahodhara who is powerful to protect from the upper regions of mine/Ooordhvam, I shall earnestly pray to Shankari who is born from Agni to protect from the below regions of mine/Adhastha, I shall earnestly pray to Shathrugna who is the destroyer of enemies to protect from two sides/Parshvam,  I shall earnestly pray to Shashvatha who is eternal to protect me always, I shall earnestly pray to Parmbhrama who is absolute bhramam to protect in the early hours of dawn/Pratha:, I shall earnestly pray to Yuddhakaushala who is extremely skillful in the battlefields to protect me in the hours of afternoons/Madhyahnam, I shall earnestly pray to Guha to protect me in the hours of Aparahnam/finishing hours  of the day, I shall earnestly pray to Dhaithyanthaka who is the destroyer of Dhaithyas to protect in the night hours/Rathri, I shall earnestly pray to Thrikalajja who is the knower of past, present and future to protect during Thrisandhya/confluence of day and night, dawn and noon, noon and dusk, I shall earnestly pray to Arindhama who is victorious to protect in each intervals, I shall earnestly pray to Gadgi who is wielded in powerful Gadgam to protect from outwards, I shall earnestly pray to  Kriththikasutha who is the son of Kriththika to protect me while sitting/leaning, distressed, I shall eaernestly pray to Pramadhadheesha who symbolizes permanent bliss to protect me while travelling, I shall earnestly pray to Pashabhrith who is wielded in powerful Pasha/noose to protect me while residing in various places, I shall earnestly pray to Shoora who is extremely valorous to protect me while sleeping /lying down, I shall earnestly pray to Shoorajith who is conqueror of enemies/triumphant to protect me on the street ways, I shall earnestly pray to Vajradhara who is wielded in weapons made of Vajra to protect me in dense wood, I shall earnestly pray to Vatu who is youthful to protect me always.”


Agasthya continues “ The sacred armor of Lord Subramanya  is capable to provide Dharma/righteousness, Arththa/wealth, Kama/desires and Moksha/liberation from repeated births, it is  superior among the sacred hymns and it was always remained highly confidential among the deities, it eradicates all kinds of illnesses, it removes even the incurable illnesses too, it provides abundance of meritorious rewards, it is divine which could provide all kinds of auspiciousness to worshiper, recitation of these sacred hymns  of Vajrapancharam could provide auspiciousness to worshiper at all times, and the worshiper remains beloved of Lord Subramanya and ultimately attain liberation from repeated births.”

Sri Kumara Thrishathi is highly propitious hymns was composed by Rishi Markandeya, it has Anushtup as chandhas, presiding deity is Kumara, Kumara as Beejam, Shakha as Shakthi, Vishakha as Keelakam, Nejamesha as Argalam, Karthikeya as sacred armor, Shanmukha for meditation.

I shall meditate upon Lord Shanmukha who has six attractive faces that has the luster of hundreds and thousands of moon, he is decked in various gem decorated ornaments that spreads intense luster, he is decked in magnificent crowns on his six heads that reveals the luster of sun in the early hours of dawn, he is adorned in Keyoora/armlets, and Hara/garlands , he is adorned in marvelous earrings that keeps dangling on the neck and spreads intense luster on the neck areas, he is decked in Kankana/bangles and waist belts of precious yellow metal, he is the essence of beauty.


I shall meditate upon Lord Guha who is the son of Lord or Lords, he has great effulgence, he has twelve eyes, he is Shanmukha who is decked in Gedam, Kukkudam/rooster, Angusham, Varadham, Pasham, Dhanus, Chakram, Vajram, Shakthi, Shoolam etc.. He is divine personified mounted on his celestial vehicle peacock and he is supremely gorgeous.


He is Arindhama/victorious, he is Kumara/youthful, he is Guha and Skandha as well, he is extremely powerful, he is beloved of Rudra, he has powerful arms, he is Maheshvara/supreme Lord who initiated from Agni, he is Rudrasutha/son of Lord Rudra, he is the commander of Ganas/Ganadhyaksha, he has mighty arms/Ugrabhahu, he dwells in caves and hills, he is born in reeds/Sharaja, he is valorous/Veera and fierce/Ugra, his eyes are crimson colored/Lohithaksha, he has beautiful eyes too, he is mounted on celestial vehicle peacock, he is supreme Lord, he is the destroyer of enemies, he overpowered his I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Karthikeya, he is the provider of abundance of boons to passionate worshiper who are surrendered at his lotus feet, he is merciful, he has the brightness of sun and the luster of precious gem, he is worshiped by Lord Indhra/Dhashashathanayana, he is wielded in weapon made of Vajra, his attractive limbs has the radiance of sun and it is decorated with various pearl ornaments and  he is decked in magnificent crown, he is smeared in highly fragrant musk all over his body, he is pure and store house of virtues, he is the delight of Goddess Sri Parvathi, he is initiated from Agni, Oh! Sri Karthikeya, kindly protects us.


Oh! Shambhusoonu/son of Lord Shambhu, Oh! Sri Mayooradhirooda/who is mounted on celestial vehicle peacock, kindly blesses us with happiness, he is the chief commander of warriors of army of deities, he is Devasenapathi whose lotus feet are worshiped by all the deities, he is served by Bhramarishis and illustrious Rishis and Sages, worshiper who yearn for Moksha/liberation from repeated births and the evil effects of Kali, he is worshiped by people who are Samsaris/people engaged in ordinary practices living in homes and taking pleasure in their  family life, he is worshiped by ardent devotees as well.


I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Subramanya who killed Tharakasura as a part of his Leela/pastime/amusement, Tharakasura who was born to Dhithi and Sage Kashyapa, he was the enemy of deities and he engaged in all atrocious deeds in the worlds, he attained several boons from Lokesha/Lord Bhrama,  Oh! Lord whose lotus feet is worshiped by Bhramanya/Maharishi  Narada, he is mounted on a magnificent throne, he is surrounded by Lord Bhrama, Lord Indhra and all the deities worshiped by showering flowers, kindly protect us.


I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Karthikeya who is the commander of deities in the battlefield, he is valorous wielded in Kodhandabana/powerful bow and arrows, and kulisha/spear, and he was followed by the army of deities, he killed the haughty demon and the entire war zone was riverberated with the sounds of auspicious musical instruments and drums, he is mounted on the King of elephants, he was fanned by the celestial Apsaras, kindly protect us.


I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Karthikeya along with Lord Ganapathi,  he is Shadvakthram/six faced, he has Dhvadhashaksham/twelve eyes, he is the enemy of demon Tharakasura, he is the son of Goddess Sri Gauri, he is married to the daughters of Vishnuputhri, he is Sri Skandha who is wielded in Kulisha/spear, and Shakthi/trident, his one hand is Abhayahastha/showering shelter to worshiper/ posture, he is Kumara who is always youthful, he has attractive six  necks resembles to conch, he is stunningly attractive, he is decked in three types of fresh alluring flower garlands, he is the Lord of Lords.


I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Karthikeya who dwells in the highest peak of Mount Kailasa, he is worshiped by prominent deities, and he is worshiped by rain clouds, he is the son of Lord of Kailasa, he is the delight of Rishis and Sages, his eyes has the resemblance to lotus flower petals, he is smeared in highly fragrant musk and decked in fresh alluring flower garlands of Parijatha, he is the son of sacred river Ganga, he is Guha who is supreme Lord, he has the luster of rose apple fruit.


I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Karthikeya who is the son of enemy of Lord Kamadheva/Madhanaripusutham, he has attractive physical features, he has the luster of thousands and millions of moon, he fulfils all the desires of the worshiper, he is promising to his worshiper who are surrendered at his lotus feet, he is safest heaven to his worshiper, he symbolizes wisdom and power, he is Suresha, he has crimson colored complexion, he is sincerely worshiped by dieites and illustrious Rishis and Sages on daily basis, he is worshiped by celestial Gandharvas and sacred rivers and ocean, he is attired in majestic yellow silk garment.


I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Karthikeya who is fond of music, he has attractive limbs, he has attractive smile on his face, he is attired in marvelous ornaments and garment, his limbs has the luster of precious yellow metal, he is inseparable from his beloved  consorts/daughters of Madhuripu, his eyes has the resemblance to lotus flower petals, he symbolizes philosophies, he is beloved son of Chandhramouli/Lord Shiva who is decked in crescent moon, he is  younger brother to Lord Ganesha, he is wielded in powerful trident on his hand/Shakthipani, he is son of sacred river Ganga/Gangeya, he is beloved son of  6 Karthika/Karthikeya, he has the attractive appearance of Lord Kamadheva, he is decked in gem decorated ornaments all over his body.

Sage Agasthya speaks “ I shall prostrate before Lord Karthikeya  whose lotus feet are worshiped by illustrious Rishis and Sages, he has the luster of moon, he is Shadanana who has six faces, he is extremely valorous, he is the delight Goddess Gauri, I shall prostrate before Lord Karthikeya  who eradicates the miseries and sorrows of the worshiper, he fulfils all the desires of his worshiper, he is skilful chariot fighter who killed Tharakasura and Prachandasura, he has subtle as well as various forms too, he has thousands of magnificent forms, he is store house virtues, he is most reliable, he is Parathpara, he is bounded as well unbounded too, he is Parapara/remote and proximate, better and worse, prior and post, earlier and later, I shall prostrate before Shikhivahana/who is mounted on his celestial vehicle peacock, I shall prostrate before Lord Karthikeya who is absolute Bhramam, he is attired in sky as clothes/mendicant, he symbolizes sky, he has golden color complexion, he has powerful arms of golden color complexion, I shall prostrate before Lord Karthikeya who represents one of the seven tongues of fire/Hiranya, he has golden virility,  I shall prostrate before Lord Karthikeya who represents severe penances, he is supreme ascetic, he represents supreme ascetism and its meritorious rewards, he augments ascetism, he is youthful always, he has won over Lord Manmatha, he is the provider of all kinds of auspiciousness to worshiper, I shall prostrate before Lord Karthikeya who was born in reed, he has the radiance of early hours of sun, he is  powerful and extremely valorous, he is personified as lovely child who was taken care by six virtuous mothers, he is free from suffering and weariness, he is wielded in vicious weapons, he is the commander of Ganas, he is chief among the army of Gana, I shall prostrate before Lord Karthikeya who is the destroyer of repeated births and troubles of aging, I shall prostrate before Vishakha who is wielded in powerful weapon Shakthi/spear, he is the Lord of Lords, he is Kumara who is always youthful, he has peacock as celestial vehicle, he is the destroyer of demon Tharakasura, I shall always prostrate before Lord Karthikeya who  is consecreated with the svaha/fire, he is Gangeya/son of Ganga, he is Karthikeya who is the son of Lord Shiva.
