Sri Jagannatha Ashtakam by Sri Adishankaracharya - Lyrics & Its meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

Oh! Lord Jagannatha, who recites melodious music on his flute, sitting on the river bank of Kalindi/Yamuna, he is a honeybee who finds immense pleasure in the lotus like faces of beautiful young maidens of Vraja.  He is venerated by the deities such as Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi/ Rama, Lord  Shambhu/Shiva,  Lord Brahma, Lord Indra/Amarapathi and Lord Ganesha.  Oh! Lord Jagannatha along with his consort Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, I earnestly pray to become the constant object of my humble vision.

Oh! Lord Jagannatha, who holds flute on his left hand, beautiful hair locks decked with the feathers of peacock, attired in grand yellow silk garment.  He bestow side long glances upon his passionate devotees, he dwells in the sacred land of Vrindavan/Vraja and reveals his presence through pastimes.  Oh! Lord Jagannatha along with his consort Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, I earnestly pray to become the constant object of my humble vision.

Oh! Lord Jagannatha, who resides on the shoreline of vast ocean, which is located close to the peak of Nilachala Hills has the resemblance of gold, with his brother mighty Lord Balabhadra and sister Subhadra in the middle, he provides an opportunity to the Suras to venerate him.  Oh! Lord Jagannatha along with Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, I earnestly pray to become the constant object of my humble vision.

Oh! Lord Jagannatha, who is the ocean of mercy, has the marvelous appearance like dark clouds.  He is the delight of Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi/ Rama and Goddess Sri Saraswathi/ Vani , his face has the resemblance of unblemished full blossomed lotus.  He is venerated by Surendras/deities and Sages; he is eulogized by Shruthi/Veda and Upanishads.  Oh! Lord Jagannatha along with Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, I earnestly pray to become the constant object of my humble vision.

Oh! Lord Jagannatha, who is eulogized by the assembly of numerous Bhoodevas/Brahmins, at the glorious moments of his procession on the grand chariot, he is compassionate towards his ardent devotees and provides abundance of boons.  He is the ocean of mercy and an honest associate to all the worlds.  Oh! Lord Jagannatha along with Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, I earnestly pray to become the constant object of my humble vision.

Oh! Lord Jagannatha, who is the jewel on the crown of Lord Brahma, has the eyes resemblance to full blown lotus flower petals, he dwells on the peak of Nilachala hill and his lotus feet are placed on the head of Lord Anantha.  He finds immense pleasure in the warm embrace of Goddess Sri Radharani, which is like a cool pond.  Oh! Lord Jagannatha along with Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, I earnestly pray to become the constant object of my humble vision.

Oh! Lord Jagannatha, I do not pray for Kingdom, or Kanaka/ gold, or Manikyam/precious stones, or affluences.  I do not yearn for a beautiful bride or bridegroom as desired by the people.  Oh! Lord Jagannatha, who is always eulogized by Lord Shiva, I shall recite your glories and earnestly pray to become the constant object of my humble vision.

Oh! Lord Jagannatha, Oh! Surapathey,/Lord of Lords, kindly remove my insignificant material bondage and existence.  Oh! Yadhavapathey/Lord of Yadhavas, kindly eradicates the vast ocean like sins of mine.  It is definite that whoever surrenders to the lotus feet of Lord Jagannatha, would be protected.  Oh! Lord Jagannatha along with Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, I earnestly pray to become the constant object of my humble vision.

Whoever recites the glorious verses of Sri Jagannatha Ashtakam in the hours of dawn would be released from all the sin and attains the sacred abode of Lord Vishnu.
