Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12 Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable through the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.


I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Mahadeva who personified as Mahakala,  he has an appearance of quivers valiantly, he represents cosmic dance which pulsate the entire body, he is the Lord who performs cosmic dance, he is absolute truth, he is omniscient, he symbolizes truth, he is safest ferry to cross the ocean of Samsara, he have three eyes, he is youthful, he is absolute truth, he represents the sacred syllable’Tha’, he is the essence of Universe and its living beings, he has supreme brilliance, he symbolizes supreme radiance, he represents mass of brilliance that illuminates the whole Universe, he represents Thanthric rites, he symbolizes Thanthra, he imparts the knowledge of Thanthric rites, he symbolizes copper, he has the luster of copper, he is fond of Tharu/tree, he is supreme ascetic who undergoes severe penances, he symbolizes radiance, he has supreme brilliance, he represents base of Universe and its living beings, he is fond of Til and offerings made  of Til, he is impartial, he adorned in jewels made of  mineral substances and copper, he symbolizes protective armor to the worshiper, he is the destroyer of the city of Thripura, he is beyond the three worlds, he have three eyes,  he is the protector of three worlds, he is Thrivishtapeshvara who has supreme radiance, he burnt the city of Thripura, he represents sacred rivers, he is Tharapathi, he is the protector of Universe and its living beings, he symbolizes precious ornament, he represents the sacred syllable  ‘Dha’, he has subtle and massive form as well, he is powerful, he is the provider of admiration and respect, he is sthanu/firm, he is permanent, he is the source of Universe and its living beings, he is the pillar, he protects us from all kinds of miseries and sorrows, he has colossal form, he is the cause and effect, he destroys miseries and sorrows of the worshiper, he is Dhaleshvara, he is dispassionate, he crushed the pride of Dhakshaprajapathi, he is Dhaksha who is watchful and wise, he represents substance and  he has provided abundance of boons to Dhundhubhi .
