Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter
- 3
Chapter – 10 - The conversation between
Vidura and King Dhritarashtra 21 - 41
Sudhanva spoke “Oh! Prahlada, I have
received Jalam/water, Madhuparkkam at the entry point of your palace, I have a
few questions required correct answers from you, who is superior Bhramana or
Virochana?”
Prahlada spoke “Oh! Bhramin, Virochana
is my only son, and you both are present before me. How could I answer your
question when both of you are in conflict?”
Sudhanva speaks “ Oh! Rajan, you can give all your wealth and possessions of cows to your son Virochana, I need a truthful
answer to my question on which we are arguing with each other so long.”
Prahlada speaks “Oh! Sudhanva, shall I
ask you something? What would happen to a person who intentionally gives the wrong
answers to the questions?”
Sudhanva speaks “Oh! Rajan, 1) the person who intentionally lies to the
questions asked would undergo sufferings like the woman who was rejected by her
husband in the night hours, 2) the liar would feel dejected like the person who
lost in the gambling, and 3) the liar would feel humiliated like the person who
worked so hard all day was rejected to enter into the village. 4) The person who lies constantly would earn a large number of enemies; 5) a person who
lies to get hold of an animal would commit the sin of descending four ancestors
from heaven. 6) The people who lie
for achieving the possession of cow would commit the sin of descending the ten
Pithrus form heaven. 7) The person
who lies for achieving the possession of horse would commit the sin of
descending hundreds of Pithrus from heaven. 8) The person who lies for pleasing the human
would commit the sin of descending thousands of Pithrus from heaven. 9) The
person who lies for the achievement of gold would cause to fall down all his
Pithrus and Pithrus in the future from heaven. 10) The person who lies for the achievement of
possession of the land would destroy the entire thing; therefore one should not
stand false witness or lie for the achievement of land in immoral ways.”
Prahlada speaks “Oh! Virochana, Sage
Angiras is well-known for his knowledge in Shashthras and scriptures, therefore
he is prominent than me. Sudhanva is highly knowledgeable and has profound
knowledge in Shashthras, his mother is superior to your mother, therefore you
cannot compete with the twice-born Sudhanva, therefore Virochana, and you have
lost before the Bhramin Sudhanva. Oh! Sudhanva, I shall request you kindly
return the Prana of my son Virochana to me.”
Sudhanva speaks “Oh! Prahlada, you have
sincerely followed the Dharma, you did not lie to me after witnessing the
threat to the Prana of your only son. Therefore, I am returning the Prana of
your dearest son. I have returned your only son Virochana to you, now let him
wash my feet before the attractive woman Keshini.”
Vidura spoke “Oh! Bharatharshabha, do not
lie for the possession of Kingdom and stately luxurious, and causes to heave
all your ancestors and the entire clan to complete destruction. Do not cause
the destruction of your people and your subjects due to the love for your children.
Oh! Rajan, deities are not like cow-herds who hold a stick to protect their
cows, the deities have given intellect to human to protect themselves from the
crisis. The person who is focused and concentrates on the welfare of all would
achieve success in all endeavors. The person who lives in excuses and wickedness
could not protect the Veda, like the birds discard its babies immediately after
they attain wings to fly. Oh! Rajan, Jeeva should abandon the following sinful
ways of living, to achieve Athmasakshathkara/realization of ‘self’ and
knowledge of Paramathma 1 ) consumption of intoxicating drinks 2) conflicts
with people 3) enmity with a large number of people 4) conflicts with the
relatives 5) ungrateful to country and its leader 6) domestic abuses and violence’s
etc. Oh! Rajan, I shall specify the seven
types of people who are not qualified to be a true witness 1) the person who is
expert in Samudhrikashasthram/Lakshanashasthra 2) a thief who has become
businessman 3) crooked person 4) physician 5) enemy 6) companion 7) person who
has the habit of praising others. Oh! Rajan, there are four deeds which are
highly propitious, if it was followed with sincerity and dedication, otherwise
it would create extreme distress to the performer, they are 1)Agnihothram 2)
vow of silence 3) learning scriptures and Veda/Adhyayanam 4) The performance of
fire sacrifices/Yajjam. Oh! Bharatharshabha, I shall narrate the deeds which
brings Bhramahathya sins 1) The person who set fire to the house 2) the person who
injects poison 3) person who eats the meal of a thief 4) Person who sells
Somarasa/intoxicating drinks 5) person who creates powerful arrows 6)
Astrologer 7) companion turned to enemy 8) person who approaches the wife of
others for physical pleasure 9) women who kill the fetus 10) person who approaches
the wife of Guru through immoral ways 11) Bhramin who consume intoxicating
drinks 12) Person who talks harshly 13) cruel person 14) disbeliever in
religion and sacred texts 15) Person who disrespects the Veda and Vedic
scholars 16) person who lives on bribe 17) person who is removed from the
society or from the particular sect 18)
Wealthiest unwilling to spend money on spiritual and religious rites 19) Person
who kills the person who has taken shelter in him. These categories of people
are considered as grave sinners of Bhramahathya.”
