Chapter – 44 – Viveka Choodamani - 431 – 440
Preceptor speaks “The characteristics of a
Jeevanmutha are 1) they do not brood over the past incidents 2) they do not get
anxious about the future 3) face all the uncertainties with courage and dignity
4) they do not get over-excited or depressed about life events, life is
uncertain and therefore the life events too. These Jeevamuktha will not get
attached to the events of past, present, or future/Kalathraya. 5) They consider
the Prapancha/Prakrithi is Maya, with the infinite Nama/names, Roopa/appearance,
Guna/virtues 6) Therefore, the material matters, and people are neither good nor
bad, evil, or noble, 7) they perceive all the living and non-living things
represent supreme Bhramam, and Oneness-in All, therefore Bhrama is Sathyam and
Jagath is Mithya. 8) Jeevanmuktha does not show Ishta/likeness or Anishta/dislike
to the Pranacha/material matters and people, and continues to remain
Nirvikara/dispassionate to material matters, richness, wealth, fame, money,
people, fame, etc. 9) Jeevanmuktha takes immense pleasure in the ‘Athmarathi’,
contemplation and meditation upon that all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, and
remain in a transcendental state. In this way, they keep themselves isolated
from the worldly matters and bondage. 10) Jeevanmuktha do not take pride in the
‘body’ or ‘I’, or do not take pride in the Karma/religious and spiritual rite
performed. They will have neither Ahambhava/pride nor desire in the Karma. 11)
Jeevamuktha have profound knowledge of ‘Veda and Vedanta, contemplate upon the
supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, was eulogized as ‘Nethi Nethi’/Na:
Ithi, Na; Ithi, which is beyond comparison, and completely get rid of interest
in worldly matters and bondage. 12) Jeevanmuktha are completely freed from the body
and I consciousness/me, myself and mine 13) Jeevanmuktha perceive the Paramathma
Parambhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva and the omnipresent nature of
Bramham and remain ‘Sarvam Bhramam Mayam’/Sarvam Kalvitham Bhrama. 14)
Jeevamuktha remain calm in two different states of appreciation and disapproval,
they remain composed, do not take pleasure while worship or gets annoyed of
abuses. 15) Jeevamuktha remain calm and composed, even if the Vishaya/worldly
matters are imposed upon them, remain free from Ahamkara/pride or Vikara/emotions,
like the ocean does not get agitated or excited while the rivers take shelter in it.”
