Vivekachoodamani Sri Shankaracharya Virachitham - The nature of Athman/Paramathma

Chapter 22 – Vivekachoodamani  211 – 220

Preceptor speaks “The supreme Bramham/Paramthma resides as the soul is Swayamjyothi/self-illuminating, which is beyond Panchakosha, and it is the sole witness in the Jeeva. It is Nirvikara/free from emotions,  Nirguna/free from attributes,  and  Nithyanandha/supreme bliss, the Mumukshu perceives that Paramathma in him, and remains in a state of bliss.”

The disciple speaks “Oh! Mahathman, Oh! Guro, you have explained the Panchakosha is not Athman, in that case, the learned who has the knowledge of Athma and Anathmavasthu contemplate upon the ‘Athman’, kindly narrate the nature of  that ‘Athman’.”

Preceptor speaks “Oh! Fortunate one, I have explained the nature of Annamaya,  Pranamaya, Manomaya, Vijjanamaya, and Anandhamaya Kosha and its function, Ahamkara, illusion, intellect, Chiththa, etc. I have narrated the source of the functioning of Karma, Gnanendhriya, Chithth, intellect, mind, Ahamkara, etc. too.  The Athman is beyond all those mentioned above, is the sole witness in the Jeeva, can be perceived with the ‘supreme consciousness’. It can be perceivable through the observance of strict austerities, disciplines, vows, celibacy, meditation, and contemplation upon the supreme Lord, it would remove the impurities like Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, and Mathshcharya, once the impurities were removed the self-illuminating Paramjyothiswaroopa Satchidananda Paramathma is perceivable to Sadhaka, and it is Athman. The Paramathma/soul is the source of the functioning of the Karma, Gnanendhriya, mind, intellect, Prana, Panchakosha, Ahamkara, etc. once the presence of the Paramathma Chaithanya disappears from the Jeeva, it is declared as ‘corpse’, hence the Athman is called ‘sole witness’ in the Jeeva. The Prathyak Athman is free from miseries and sorrows, pure, unblemished, changeless, and eternal bliss. The Athman is the sole witness in the Jeeva during the three states of Jagrath/awakening, Swapna/dream, and Sushupthi/sleep, and it is the cause for the ‘I’ and body consciousness in the Jeeva. The Athman has Nithyanandhaswaroopa, and has self-illuminating nature. The children get thrilled watching the reflection of the sun in the water-filled mud pot, as the real one. The fools get excited to understand the reflection of the ‘Athman’ in it, and the Athmajjani perceives that Paramathma Parambhramam with the constant practice of austerities, contemplation, and meditation and remain in extreme bless. The intelligent ones, leaving the reflection of the sun in the water, look at the sky. In the same manner, the Athmajjani abandon the interests in worldly matters and bondage, engages in the austerities and Tapasya, get relieved from all the sins and impurities, perceives that Paramathma Parambhramam in them. They immerse in the contemplation upon that self-illuminating supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the cave-like heart, which is the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, chithth, Ahamkara, Panchakosha, Karma, and Gnanendhriyas, etc.”
