Sri Mani Rathna Mala – Prashnoththari – Sri Shankaracharya Virachitham

 







Chapter – 4 – Sri Manirathna Mala – 17 – 21


The disciple speaks “ Oh! Bhagavan, kindly enlighten me 1) what kind of people should be abandoned for good? 2) What are practices beneficial for a Mumukshu?”

 

The preceptor speaks “1) The association with the morally wrong people, wicked, sinners, and ignorant should be abandoned for good. The relationship with these kinds of people would bring constant agony, miseries, and grief, take away the serenity of mind permanently and push the Jeeva into the vicious cycles of rebirth. 2) The Mumukshu who sincerely yearn to get relieved from the sufferings of worldly existence seeks shelter in Mahathma and noble-souls, along with firm devotion and faith in Lord Parameshwara, undertake various austerities, Shamadhamadhi, vows, observe celibacy, Swadhyaya, meditation and contemplation, etc. get rid of the impurities of Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, and achieve the knowledge of all-pervasive Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, knowledge of ‘self/Paramarththa Thaththva, the indestructible Purusha and destructible Prakrithi, the impermanent nature of worldly matters and bondage, etc. and get rid of the body and I consciousness/me, myself, and mine.”

 

The disciple speaks “Oh! Bhagavan, 1) what are the characteristics of Laghuthva and Mahathva? 2) whose life is fruitful? 3) Whose death is admirable?”

 

The preceptor speaks “ 1) The ignorant Jeeva chases after the accumulation of wealth, possession, money, bodily pleasure without the knowledge of its fleeting nature. The Guruthvam/Mahathvam is the fortunate Jeeva get rid of interest in worldly matters and bondage, achieve the nearness of the preceptor, gets rid of impurities, undertake austerities and Tapasya, and achieve the Bhramajjanam and make their lives fruitful. 2) The Jeevan Muktha’s life is most admirable and fruitful, achieves the superior state of ‘Athmarathi’ after several years of extreme austerities and Tapasya, consider the body as the bundle of secrete, wander fearlessly and blissfully like a child. These Jeevan Mukthas gets freed from the vicious cycles of repeated births and achieve union with the Paramathma Parambhrmam. 3) The death of Bhramajjani, Athmajjani, Jeevanmuktha is most admirable, while living they undertake extreme austerities and Tapasya gets freed from the impurities, body and I consciousness, the interest in material matters and bondage, and witness all those Nama, Roopa, Dhrishya of Jagrathavastha/awakening as same as in the Swapnavastha/dream, get freed from the Dhvandhabhava such as happiness and sorrow, joy and grief, respect and disrespect, etc. This Jeevanmuktha do not hurl into the vicious cycles of rebirth, achieve union with the Bramham.”

 

The disciple speaks “Oh! Bhagavan, who is considered as speechless and deaf?”

 

The preceptor speaks “ 1) The person who is not willing to utter a word when he/she required to speak, or do not speak wisely or speak which is not necessarily required  2) The person who is not willing to speak the truth or not willing to focus on the truth  or not willing to listen to the truth 3) The person who is not willing to hear the pleasant words and truth, the person whose way of communication deter from the purpose of communication or the person whose communication stir commotion, are considered as deaf and dumb.”

 

The disciple speaks “Oh! Bhagavan,  1) what is supreme philosophy? 2) which is superior as well as righteous deed? 3)  Which one should abandon permanently? Which is the superior charity?”

 

The preceptor speaks “ 1) The supreme Philosophy is the knowledge of the Adhvatheeya Paramathma Parambhramam resides as the soul is the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, Prana, Chiththa, Ahamkara, Karma, and Gnanendhriyas. The knowledge of self’ and the Oneness- in- all is the supreme philosophy. The Athma is Paramathma which is free from dualities, impurities, and afflictions, unblemished, has neither birth nor death, and is eternal bliss. The Universe and its living and non-living things are the essences of that Adhvatheeya Paramathma Parambhramam. 2) The Sadhachara/strict observance of discipline, Varnna Ashrama Dharma, austerities, celibacy, vow, Sathyam, Dhaya, Shaucham, Dhama, Shama, Swadhyaya, meditation, and contemplation upon the supreme Bhramam, get rid of impurities of Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, and Mathshcharya, body and I consciousness/me, myself, and mine, and get freed from the interest in worldly matters and bondage to achieve serenity of mind. 3) Lust and desire, yearning for bodily pleasure should abandon for good. 4) The supreme charity is offering shelter to Jeeva who is in real need.”

 

The disciple speaks “Oh! Bhagavan, 1) who is the biggest enemy? 2) Which is difficult to appease? 3) What is the root cause of grief?”

 

The preceptor speaks “ 1) The biggest enemy are the impurities of mind such as Kama/lust, Krodha/anger, Lobha/stinginess, Moha/desire, Madha/pride, and Mathshcharya/insatiable nature/greed, and are the huge obstacles to the Jeeva who strive to achieve Purusharththa as well. The impurities of the mind get destroyed with the strict practice of austerities, Shamadhamadhi, celibacy, Swadhyaya, meditation, and contemplation upon the Supreme Lord. 2) The most difficult to appease is bodily pleasure, and it is one of the major hurdles in achieving Moksha/serenity of mind. 3) The root cause of grief is ‘Mamatha’/the body and I consciousness, the attachment to the body is futile as an attachment to material matters such as possession, wealth, fame, money, richness, people, etc. The human body undergoes constant transformation, aging, illnesses, and death, in the same manner, the attachment to material matters and people also experience the transformation and ruin, hence the attachment to the body and material matters causes constant sufferings.”

 

Jjathum Na Shakyam Cha Kimasthi Sarvayoshin Mayocharitham Thadheeyam | Ka  Dhusthyaja Sarva  Janair Dhurasha  Vidhyaviheena:  Pashurasthi Ko Va ||

Mookoasthi Ko Va  Bhadhirashcha Ko Va  Vakthum Nayuktham Samaye  Samarththa: | Thathdhyam Supathyam  Na Shrunothi Vakyam Vishwasapathram Na Kimasthi Nari !

 

Thaththvam  Kimekam Shivam Adhvatheeyam | Kimuththamam Sath Charitham Yadhasthi | Thyajyam Sukham Kim Sthriyameva  Samyak Dheyam Param Kim  Thvabhayam Sadhaiva ||
