Chapter – 184-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of devotion and austerities to get rid of impurities of the mind

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, I am yearning for your compassionate grace, haven’t seen me waiting at your doorsteps for a long time? Oh! Prabho, you have liberated the people who have surrendered at your lotus feet, kindly include my name in that list, so that I can get rid of the sufferings from the ocean of worldly existence/Samsara Sagara. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, your fame is widespread in the whole Universe, the Veda and sacred scriptures eulogize your benevolence to your devotees, and you are the savior of the distressed and desolate people, I earnestly pray to shower your compassionate grace upon me. Oh! Prabho, I am living in utter disgrace, I am an impure and grave sinner living among the sinners, impatiently waiting for your grace, so that I can get rid of Thapathraya/three kinds of grief. Oh! Prabho, you have two choices before you, either give up on me or liberate me from the sufferings of worldly existence, if you give up, it would definitely affect your title ‘Pathitha Pavan’, hence kindly protects your vow. Oh! Prabho, I am not lying to you, I am a grave sinner, I didn’t utilize the three important phases of life to practice austerities, vows, celibacy, non-violence, truthfulness, self-control, or I did not practice religious or customary rites, I did not learn Veda or sacred scriptures, etc. to get rid of impurities of mind such as lust, desire, ego, jealousy, pride, and anger, I have committed sins by words, mind, and deed, Oh! Prabho, kindly take a look at the list of my Karma.”

Chapter – 183-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The three important phases of life/childhood, adulthood, and youth to achieve fruitfulness in life

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, kindly leave your indecision and tell me whether you can protect me from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence, and the Thapathraya/three kinds of grief or not, do not feel timid, otherwise, instruct someone to do it on your behalf, I would accept that too. Oh! Prabho, are you not that Pathitha Pavan/protector of the distressed soul? Or Am I not the right person to remain protected? Oh! Prabho, kindly tell me something which I should follow or need to correct, I will do that also. Oh! Prabho, I have spent the three important phases of life such as childhood, adulthood, and youthful state imitated as a devotee of Lord Sri Hari, believing that you are the protector of the distressed soul, and I have well pretended myself as a sincere devotee of Lord Sri Hari and surrendered to your lotus feet. Oh! Prabho, I feel dejected witnessing everyone got liberated from the sufferings of worldly existence, and I have been left alone, I have not attained the fruitfulness of life.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sharangapani/wielder of the bow Sharnga, Oh! Sri Hari, you are well-known for your graciousness, you are too kind and compassionate to your devotees. Oh! Prabho, you have provided the four Purusharththa/Dharma-righteousness, Arththa-wealth, Kama-desire, and Moksha-liberation, to your childhood friend Bhramin Sudhama who was a penniless and staunch devotee of you. Oh! Prabho, you have brought back the lost child of Maharishi Sandheepani from Yamaloka/the abode of Lord Yama and presented him as Gurudhakshina/fee for a preceptor. Oh! Sharangapani, you have sieved off ten heads of demon Ravana on the battlefield, and crowned the younger brother of Ravana/ Vibheeshana who was a staunch devotee, as the King of Lanka. Oh! Prabho, your childhood friend Sudhama who spend good times with you at the hermitage of Maharishi Sandheepani was showered with an abundance of wealth without his plea. Oh! Prabho, you have showered an abundance of grace to people who have known you, I am ignorant and dull-minded, what did I do to you? I did not do any service to you, I am blind by birth, how can I serve you?”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho,  Oh! Madhav, your lack of interest in my cries makes me miserable, and feel neglected, I do not leave my cries before you I do not leave your doorsteps, I do not stop fighting for your kindness, even though you have no interest in me. Oh! Prabho, I have been a grave sinner in all seven births, although I won’t stop my austerities and penances to achieve liberation from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence. Oh! Prabho, do not abandon me, I can’t even spread rumors or ill-fame about you, why do you want to test my faith, I have achieved the precious ‘Sri Harinama Roopi’ gem, Oh! Prabho, I won’t leave your doorsteps until and unless I achieve your compassionate grace.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, You are the savior of the distressed people, you are well known for your vows to your devotees who are surrendered at your lotus feet, kindly protect your vow.  Oh! Prabho, I am a helpless, grieving soul, I have no one to protect me, I am at your doorstep waiting for your kind and compassionate grace, but you have deserted me. Oh! Prabho, the penniless Bhramin/twice-born Sudhama, childhood friend arrived at your doorsteps and was received with great honor. You have given him the four Purusharththa/Dharma/righteousness, Arththa/wealth, Kama/desire, and Moksha/liberation in return for two handfuls of puffed rice. Oh! Prabho, Devi Dhraupadi was humiliated in the large assembly of Kauravas, and Dhussasan removed her clothes, she cried out for your help was received a mountain of clothes to protect her from further disgrace. Oh! Prabho, you have pleased your preceptor Sandheepani by bringing back his son to life. Oh! Prabho, why are you so stern towards me? Oh! Prabho, kindly protect me from the Thapathraya/three kinds of grief such as 1) Adhidheivik – grief caused by natural calamities, famine, drought, forest fire, flood, epidemic, etc. 2) Adhyathmik – grief caused by the attachment to possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, companion and relatives and 3) grief caused by the illnesses, aging, fear of death, separation from beloved ones, etc.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Prayer by Sri Surdas Maharaj to Lord Sri Hari to restore the title 'Pathitha Pavan'

Chapter – 179-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –Prayer by Sri Surdas Maharaj to restore the title 'Pathitha Pavan'

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, when did you liberate the grave sinner like me? Oh! Sri Hari, you are well-known as ‘Pathitha Pavan’ /savior of the distressed people, till now you have forgiven and freed the people who have made silly mistakes, and for that, you did not take too much effort at all.  Oh! Prabho, I shall list the people who have attained freedom from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence at ease with your compassionate grace, the King of birds Jatayu was brutally wounded while fighting with the ten-headed Ravana while abducting Devi Sita was left his mortal on your lap, the elephant Gajendra who was seized on the leg by a crocodile in the pond was freed with your fierce Sudharshan,  Devi Ahalya the chaste wife of Sage Gautama was cursed to become rock was released from the curse at the touch of the dust particles from your feet.  Oh! Prabho, the prostitute/Ganika achieved liberation by merely listening to the ‘Sri Ramanama’ from her parrot, thus you have restored your title ‘Pathitha Pavan’/savior of distressed people, without any difficulties. Oh! Prabho, the twice-born Ajamila was a staunch devotee of you, he pushed himself to utter grief by his own mistake, lived in the association of a prostitute in the forest, and had children, later you have elevated him to the Sri Baikundam/the supreme abode free from the grief and sufferings. Oh! Prabho, the people who have achieved your grace were not grave sinners like me, they have committed minor mistakes and pushed themselves to grief, and you have protected them immediately at their cries. Oh! Prabho, I am not an excellent poet, I am dull-minded and ignorant, kindly do not take my words into your heart. Oh! Prabho, how did I experience the fact that you are the savior of the distressed soul, until and unless I get liberated from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence? So, kindly protect me from the grief of worldly existence and repeated births.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Lord Sri Hari, the savior of distressed and desolate souls

Chapter – 178-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –Lord Sri Hari, the savior of distressed and desolate souls

Sri Surdas Maharj speaks “Oh! Prabho, you are the savior of distressed soul/Pathitha Pavan, I am the grave sinner who was abandoned by all, there is no sinner like me on Earth. The twice-born/Bhramin Ajamila who was fallen at the beauty of a prostitute in the forest and abandoned his own family and Bhraminic rites was liberated by the mere utterance of ‘Narayana’ at his deathbed cannot be treated as a grave sinner like me. Oh! Prabho, hell is scared to accommodate me afterlife, Lord Yama has closed the doors of hell for a grave sinner like me. Oh! Ramanath, do not take pride in your title ‘Pathithapavan’/savior of distressed and desolate, because you have liberated the people of minor mistakes, I am a grave sinner how do you liberate me from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence? Oh! Prabho, if you do not shower your compassionate grace upon this distressed soul, how would you protect your title ‘Pathithapavan’ which was highly eulogized by Vedas?”
