Sri Kalabhairava Ashtakam by Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics and meanings

I shall meditate upon Lord Kalabhairava who is the protector of sacred land Kashi whose lotus feet is venerated by Devaraja, he is decked in Vyala/serpent as sacred thread across the chest, he is decked in crescent moon on matted hair locks, he is compassionate, he is prostrated by Maharishi Naradha and illustrious Sages and Rishis, he is Digambara who is attired in directions as garment, I shall meditate upon Lord Kalabhairava who is the protector of sacred land Kashi, he has intense brilliance of  thousands and millions of Surya, he guides us to safely cross the unfathomable ocean of Samsara, he is supreme Lord who is not perceivable through senses, he is most desirable to worshiper, he have bluish colored throat, he have three eyes, he is Kalakala who is death to Lord Yama, his eyes are resembles to lotus flowers, he is wielded in powerful trident, he symbolizes terminology/sacred texts and scriptures, I shall meditate upon Lord Kalabhairava who is the protector of sacred land Kashi, he is wielded in  Shoola,  Dakka, Pasham and Dhandam, he is the cause of Universe and its living beings/Adikaranam, he has dark color complexion and great stature, he is primeval, he represents terminology, he is infallible/pure, he has colossal form, he is valorus, he is Prabhu/supreme Lord/powerful, he is fond of performance of  unique form of cosmic dance/Vichithra Thandavam, I shall meditate upon Lord Kalabhairava who is the protector of sacred land Kashi who is the provider of Bhukthi/pleasure as well as Mukthi/liberation from repeated births, he is most celebrated and auspicious, he is beloved of his ardent devotees, he is worshiped by the whole world, he is the source of sounds, he is decked in various attractive precious ornaments of yellow metal as waist belt, I shall meditate upon Lord Kalabhairava who is the protector of sacred land Kashi, he is the protector of law and justice, he destroys the people who does not follow righteousness, he eradicates actions, worldly desires and attachments of worshiper, he is the safest haven to his worshiper, he is Vibhu who has the luster precious yellow metal, he has attractive matted hairlocks and  he is pure, I shall meditate upon Lord Kalabhairava who is the protector of sacred land Kashi whose lotus feet  has the impression of gem decorated, he is imperishable,  he is matchless, he is beloved deity of all, he is pure, he destroys untimely and accidental death, he destroys the clutches of  dreadful tooth, I shall meditate upon Lord Kalabhairava who is the protector of sacred land Kashi, he produces boisterous laughter, shattered and abnormal sounds, he is originated from the lineage of lotus bud like egg, his compassionate grace and strict commands are capable to eradicates the sins of worshiper, he is capable to provide Ashtasiddhis/eight types of supernatural powers, he is decked in garland made of skulls, I shall meditate upon Lord Kalabhairava who is the protector of sacred land Kashi, he is the Lord of Bhoothaganas, his glorious myths are widely spoken, he is Vibhu who ensures abundance of pieties to the people who resides in the sacred land of Kashi and eradicates all their sins, he is Jagathpathi who is clever/skilled who make certain  predominance of justice, he is primeval.



Oh! Mortals, the glorious verses of Kalabhairavashtakam is capable to provide Gnana/wisdom and knowledge, and Mukthi/liberation from repeated births, it brings abundance of pieties, it eradicates Shoka/sorrow/depression, Moha/desire/lust, Dhainyam/wretched/pitiable state, Lobham/covetousness/greed, Kopa/Anger, and Thapa/mental afflictions of the people who recites or listens to the above verses and worship Lord Kalabhairava.
