Chapter -10 – Upashamam
Sage Ashtavakra speaks “ Oh! Rajan, excessive
desire, excessive wealth causes immoralities and afflictions, therefore abandon
the Kama and Arththa which causes afflictions, hence do not get attached to any
of the Kama, Artha, Dharma. Oh! Rajan, Purusharththa is Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha, Oh! Rajan, Dharmanushtana brings an abundance of piousness that
would bring Arththa and Kama as well. Therefore whoever abandons Kama, Artha,
Dharma would attain the Paramapurusharththa Moksha. Oh! Rajan, companions,
wealth, possession of the land and precious ornaments, house, fame, wife, possession
of precious things, has short-living nature; it remains with the Jeeva for a
very short period of time. All these possession of material wealth are like a
dream and rainbow/fleeting nature. Oh! Rajan, the possession of wealth, fame,
richness, people, are mere illusion, has no permanent existence. Oh! Rajan, the
Thrishna/desire causes the attachment and pain of separation, therefore embrace
Vairagya and achieve bliss, and leave the Thrishna forever. Oh! Rajan,
attachment to people/wife, companion, children, families, and relatives, are
Thrishna, it is a bondage, would make you miserable in their absence. The
abandonment of the attachment to people and material matters is Moksha. The
abandonment of interest in worldly matters and bondage would bring the
knowledge of supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in Jeeva, which is eternal bliss.
Oh! Rajan, the supreme Bhramam has no duality, it is supreme consciousness, and
pure. The Prakrithi/Prapancha/Universe is a Jadavasthu, undergoes constant
transformation and ruin. Oh! Rajan, practice the abandonment of interest in
worldly matters and bondage, which causes afflictions, and has impermanent
nature/Asath, the supreme soul/Sath resides as a soul in you is eternal and
supreme bliss. Oh! Rajan, you had several births before soaked in the
attachment to wives, children, Kingdom, people, and royal comforts, and the
fact is that you have lost it all in all your births. Therefore do not keep
attachment to those Jadavasthu/people, wealth, possession, richness, fame,
kingdom, stately luxuries, etc. Oh!
Rajan, abandon the chase after the Arththa, Kama, and Sathkarma, you cannot
achieve serenity or peace of mind in the dense wood of Samsara. Oh! Rajan, you have
performed various tasks with your body, mind, and words, which could provide
either grief or happiness. Therefore, refrain from all those practices and keep
yourself serene.”

Chapter -11 – The fruit of true wisdom
Sage Ashtavakra speaks “Oh! Rajan, the
intellectuals thoroughly understands the nature of Prakrithi and Purusha, which
lacks existence and existence respectively, and emotions, in this way they have
got relieved from misconceptions, remain impassionate, free from impurities,
and grief. Oh! Rajan, the intellectuals who have the knowledge of the origin of the Universe and its living beings, and the supreme Lord who is the cause of all
the causes, get relieved from misapprehensions, desires, and remain contented
and serene. Oh! Rajan, the intellectuals have the knowledge that the afflictions/troubles,
miseries, and wealth would definitely knock the life of Jeeva in due course of
time with the grace of that Supreme Lord, therefore they remain serene,
contented, with perfect control over sense, will not push themselves to sorrow
or happiness or anxieties. Oh! Rajan, the intellectuals have a clear
understanding of the death, birth, happiness, and sorrow, which is caused by
the intervention of the Supreme Lord, therefore they do not get perplexed, and
they refrain/unhurt from the results of Karma. Oh! Rajan, the intellectuals
have a thorough understanding of the cause of grief. The redundant thoughts are the cause for the
mental afflictions and physical exhaustion; therefore they refrain from
over-thinking and keep themselves serene and contented. Oh! Rajan, the intellectuals, who have a thorough understanding of Dheha/body as Asath that undergoes constant transformation
and ruin, and the knowledge of supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in Jeeva. Hence,
they live like the person who has achieved Kaivalya/Moksha, with the constant remembrance
‘I am that supreme consciousness’. They do
not take account of the Karma performed or not performed. Oh! Rajan, the
intellectual who has the knowledge of ‘Aham Bhramamsmi’, /’I am that Bhraman’
remains free of Vikalpa/false conception, they are pure, serene, do not bother
about the things achieved or not achieved.
Oh! Rajan, the intellectuals who have the knowledge of the diversified
nature of Prakrithi/people, wealth, money, fame, possession, richness, that are
impermanent, would remain free from the interest in worldly matters and bondage, in this way they achieve that supreme Bhramam
which is unblemished, pure, bliss, and free from afflictions.”
