Ashtavakra Gita/Ashtavakreeyam – Chapter - 12

Chapter -12 –  Athma Samsthithi

King Janaka speaks “Maharishi, I have understood the afflictions caused by the deeds, words, and intellect, I am not that body, I am supreme consciousness/Athman, which is free from Karma, and afflictions. The Athman is pure, unblemished, does not take pleasure in the activities of sense, it does not wedge with the material matters or people, the mind and intellect, and the redundant thoughts cause afflictions. The Athman is free from material matters and bondage is serene, the mind and intellect are impure with the Thriguna/Sathvik, Rajasik, and Thamasik requires the practice of Samadhi/transcendental state. Oh! Guru, I have understood the supreme nature of Athman that has no desires, or no attachment or nothing to abandon, it is free from happiness or sorrow, it has no pain of grief from the separation of people, money, wealth, fame, richness, etc. I am that supreme consciousness which is free from afflictions. Athman is free from the observance or inobservance of Ashrama Dharma, or meditation, or sense of abandonment of interest in worldly matters or bondage, these are the means to attain that supreme Bhramam and achieve the serenity of mind, and the Nirvikalpasamadhi is possible only after abandoning all those activities. The Athman is free from bondage, hence the performance of Karma or non-performance of the same is out of ignorance, the Athman is beyond all those Karma. Oh! Maharishi, the supreme Bhramam is beyond perception, words, or intellect, some people may practice to perceive that supreme Bhramam in Sagunaswaroopa and contemplate upon it, I have refused that practice too. I am contemplating upon that supreme Bhramam which has no specific appearance. The fortunate person achieves the practice of contemplation upon that all-pervasive supreme Bhramam which has no specific form, as Athman, and remains contented and serene.”

Chapter -13 –  The fruit of the state of Jeevamuktha

King Janaka speaks “ Oh! Maharishi, the lack of ‘I consciousness’/my, mine, me/ brings serenity and peace of mind, but it is difficult to achieve even for the ascetics who wanders in Kaupeena/loincloth. Therefore I have nothing to abandon or nothing to achieve, I am free from afflictions. Oh! Maharishi, the attachment to body, mind, and words causes afflictions to Jeeva, therefore I have abandoned interest in the action, thoughts, and words, and achieved the Paramapurusharththa, and keeping free from troubles. The Karma/deeds performed by the body has nothing to do with the Athman, which is beyond Karma. I am performing all those duties and responsibilities without getting attached to it and keeping myself serene. Oh! Maharishi, the Yogis and Karmakandi/Jeeva who finds pleasure in the performance of various Karma, mistaken with the ‘I consciousness’/me, myself, and mine, I have clearly understood the Athman is free from Samyoga and Viyoga from the body, therefore I am free from troubles. The soul is eternal and the body is perishable, once the soul leaves the body, it assumes another body and continues its journey until it merges with the supreme Bhramam. Oh! Maharishi, I have nothing to gain or lose living in a place, or traveling to another place or sleeping in a place.  The Jjyani who has the knowledge of Paramarththa Thaththva does not lose or gain anything in the performance or non-performance of Karma. Oh! Maharishi, I have nothing to gain from hard work or nothing to lose from the absence of work, I am free from happiness or sorrow out of gain or loss. Therefore I am free from mental afflictions. Oh! Maharishi, the happiness, and sorrows have fleeting nature, in the same manner, the happiness and sorrows from the worldly matters and bondage also have short-living nature. Therefore, I have abandoned Shubha/auspiciousness and Ashubha/inauspiciousness, and contemplate upon the supreme Bhramam which is free from afflictions. Oh! Maharishi, the soul/Athman has assumed several bodies/several births and underwent afflictions due to interest in the worldly matters and bondage; therefore I am contemplating upon that supreme Bhramam which is eternal bliss.”
