Chapter – 4 – Sri Guru Gita – 31 – 40
Lord Mahadeva speaks “Oh! Mahadevi, the disciple should not use unwarranted things in the hermitage of a preceptor, or
should not run around the Ashram, distracting others who are engaged in the
various spiritual and religious activities, or do not give lectures on
Gurudheeksha or act as the owner of the Ashrama or do not engage in any deeds
that are unfavorable to Guru. The following deeds are considered unjustifiable
before the preceptor 1) Upashraya/leaning on the wall, or others while sitting
before the preceptor 2) Paryanka/seated on the comfortable or cushion seats 3)
Padhaprasaranam/moving legs or keep changing the seating position 4) stretching
legs or seat uncomfortably. The disciple
should not unfollow the command of the preceptor at any time, whether it is day
or night. The disciple should work as a sincere slave for the welfare of the
preceptor, and perform all the duties and responsibilities with utmost sincerity
and honesty. The disciple should not take notice or entertain the Dhravya/material
things, which was not used by the Guru, the sincere disciple accepts the things
that were offered by Guru, and receive them with utmost contentment like a slave, the disciple should be humble and dutiful to Guru, remember that the Pranadharana made
it possible at the grace of Guru. Oh!
Devi, Gurupadhuka, Guruasana, Gurushayya, etc. are venerable, should not touch
with the leg or do not disrespect any of the things which are used by the
Preceptor. Oh! Devi, the disciple should not touch the shadow or step in the shadow
of Guru. The disciple should always follow Guru, should not cross his ways or
walk before him. The disciple should not overdo or use expensive personal
attire or ornaments which could make the saffron robe unnoticed or do not use
any costume which is most stunning than the saffron robe of the preceptor. Oh!
Devi, it is inauspicious to listen to Gurunindha/disrespectful remark against the
preceptor, in that case, either cut off the tongue of the person who
disrespects the preceptor or if not possible, run away from the place or close
ears tightly so that the inauspicious words do not enter into your ears or
abandon the place permanently. The leftover meal of the preceptor should not be
given to anyone, or do not make a promise in the name of the preceptor, a disciple
should sincerely follow all the commands of his preceptor. The disciple should
not use any word of Apriya/unfriendly, or Asathya/untruthful, or arrogant or unnecessary
explanation before the Preceptor, he should sincerely serve the preceptor and
follow his commands truthfully. The Preceptor should be addressed with highly honorable
and pleasing words such as ‘Oh! Prabho, Oh! Devakuleshana, Oh! Swamin, Oh!
Rajakuleshwara,’ etc. The preceptor should address with honorable gestures, humble
and pleasing words.”
