Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of knowledge of self/Athmavidhya/Bhramavidhya

Chapter – 281-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The significance of knowledge of self/Athmavidhya/Bhramavidhya

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, it is impossible to achieve the serenity of the mind without the knowledge of self/soul/Bhramavidhya/ body and soul are different, the body is perishable and soul is imperishable, which is supreme bliss. The lack of knowledge of the Paramathma Parambhramam resides as a soul, persuades the Jeeva to soak in illusion, like the musk deer wanders aimlessly in search for fragrance, without the knowledge that it has the store of rich fragrance on its navel, the humans get attached to the worldly matters of sounds, touch, passion, appearances, and smell of infinite nature, and constantly throws into three kinds of grief, such as 1) grief caused by natural calamities, earthquake, wildfire, flood, famine, drought, epidemics, etc. 2) grief caused by aging, illnesses, fear of death, and separation from beloved ones 3) grief caused by the attachment to possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. in their absence. It would be like the ignorant person looking at his mirror image, and wiping off the ink patches on his face in the mirror, which is a failed attempt to remove the stain on the face. Oh! Mortals, the lecture on the knowledge of self cannot bring the Athmanubhoothi/experience of bliss unless it was put into practice, like the earthen lamp filled with oil and cotton was not lightened with the match stick can’t shed light and disperse the darkness. Oh! Mortals, The knowledge of self would remove the impurities of the mind, such as lust, ego, desire, anger, pride, jealousy, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, eventually, the desire for infinite worldly matters like the darkness of ignorance would disappear. Oh! Mortals,  the life lived without the knowledge of self is futile, like the blind cannot experience the brightness of the sun. The all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul is an eternal bliss, and it is impossible to achieve that bliss without the knowledge of self, the fortunate are the ones who achieve permanent bliss and get rid of interest in worldly matters and repeated births.”
