Sadhana Panchakam by Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics & meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

|| Shankara ||

Oh! Mortals, recite Veda on daily basis and bring its teachings into regular practice, worship the divine and get rid from the worldly bondage, wash off the sins and realize the failing nature of worldly matters, cling on to the awareness about Athman/soul and abandon the limited knowledge about self.  Oh! Mortals, remain in the association of Vedas and sacred scriptures which enhance and strengthen the devotion, develop the nature of self-discipline and abandon all those acts which caused by self-centeredness, approach true ascetics and virtuous people and serve their  feet relentlessly, seek knowledge about the imperishable ‘Bhramam’ and sincerely follow the teachings of sacred scriptures.  Oh! Mortals, sincerely follow the meanings of sacred scriptures with utmost devotion and dedication, which has supreme brilliance and take refuge in that, stay away from unwanted arguments and sincerely follow the interpretation of sacred scriptures, realize the supreme knowledge that you are a Bhramam and get rid of self-centeredness, get rid of misconception of body as Athman/soul and never get into arguments with intellectuals.  Oh! Mortals, treat your disease of hunger with the alms like medicine on daily basis, don’t crave for sumptuous meals and be satisfied whatever you have earned, learn to find no differences between cold or hot and do not engage in worthless pronunciation, never yearn for kindness from others and abandon ill feelings towards others.  Oh! Mortals, live happily in solitude and practice the state of Samadhi/union with God, learn about the infinite self and its momentary existence in the world, with the power of true consciousness let your past dissolve, experience the present and remain untouched by the future, eventually the prarabdhakarma will melt away and attain union with the Parambhramam/awareness about supreme self.
