Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The worldly matters of infinite sound, touch, smell, passion, and appearance are toxic poison

Chapter – 210-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The worldly matters of infinite sound, touch, smell, passion, and appearance are toxic poison

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, why did you harsh to me? why did you become unhappy when my turn arrived to liberate me from the sufferings of worldly existence? Oh! Prabho, you have enthusiastically saved the elephant Gajendra who was seized on the leg by a crocodile in the pond.  Gajendra called out for help, and the families, friends, and relatives made a sincere effort to save Gajendra became futile, and had to leave him alone to die,  thus Gajendra fought with the crocodile/the impurities of mind/ for thousands of years, finally, cried out for ‘Adhimoola’/the supreme Lord Sri Hari, instantly the Supreme Lord hurried to Gajendra, leaving his celestial abode 'Sri Vaikunda' and vehicle Garuda, sieved the head of the crocodile with the Sudharshana Chakra/disc, and liberated Gajendra and the crocodile from the curse. Oh! Prabho, likewise, kindly save me from the curse like the toxic poison of worldly matters and permit me into your supreme abode. Oh! Prabho, you are the knower of all,  you are the creator of the Universe and its living and non-living things, all the living and non-living things are shackled by the Karma, kindly do not get angry with me, and do whatever you feel appropriate. Oh! Prabho, I have made terrible mistakes after attaining a precious life as a human, my mind, action, and words were impure, unfortunately, after a long mad chase behind the material and physical pleasures, I have not been satisfied yet. Oh! Sri Hari, Oh! Pathitha Pavan, why do not you listen to my cries? Oh! Prabho, it is quite natural that the bullock carts get tied to the healthy bullocks, you are the supreme Bhramam, you are the purifier of souls, hence I earnestly pray to save me from the sufferings of worldly existence and repeated births.”

Chapter – 209-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The supreme Lord is Antharyami/resides as a soul, the knower of All

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Hari, there is no one distressed like me, Oh! Prabhu, you are Antharyami who resides as a soul in the living and non-living things, you are the knower of All, you are the cause of the Universe and its living and non-living things, you are all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, you are the Sacchidhanandha/Sath+Chith+Anandha/eternal+pure+bliss/ Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam who is the sole source of the functioning of the mind, chithth, Ahamkara, intellect, vital air/Prana, Karma and Gnanendhriyas/sensory organs, etc. Oh! Prabho, you are aware of the mountain-sized sins committed by me, I was arrogant, ignorant, dull-minded, I was thoughtless, I have been portraying untruthful as truthful, I was drenched in the infinite worldly matters of fleeting nature, I have considered the possession, richness, wealth, money, wife, children, relatives, companion, and fame are permanent, would follow me wherever I go, alas! nothing was real, it was like a dream. Oh! Prabho, I have served the people who were soaked in worldly matters, and material and physical pleasures, I did not serve the Santh/saintly, Mahathma, noble souls who are the reservoir of wisdom, and Paramarththa Thaththvam/absolute knowledge. I was chasing after wealth, possession, fame and richness, etc. like the deer musk/Kasthuri is the fragrant substance restored in its body that does not mind wandering with the dirty creatures, I was in the association of the wicked and deceitful, leaving the association of Santh, Mahathma, noble souls who represent Bhagavan Namaroopi Chinthamani/precious gem. Oh! Prabho, I experienced absolute serenity,  the moment I surrendered at your lotus feet, Oh! Prabho, I am a distressed soul, you are the savior of the distraught people, kindly save your promise to your devotees and liberate me from the sufferings of worldly existence and repeated births.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The precious birth as a human should be utilized for attaining righteousness/Dharma, wealth/Arththa, desire/Kama, and Moksha/liberation from sufferings of worldly existence

Chapter – 208-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The precious birth as a human should be utilized for attaining righteousness/Dharma, wealth/Arththa, desire/Kama, and Moksha/liberation from sufferings of worldly existence

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Sri Hari, there is no Jeeva distressed like me, I cannot describe the sins committed by words, mind, and deeds. Oh! Prabho, Chithraguptha who is seated in the abode of Yama, the secretary of Lord Yama notes all those sins of the Jeeva/souls, would stop to count my sins, and he would stop to write down in utter horror. Oh! Prabho, there are crores of emissaries of Lord Yama rushing to take the Jeeva at the order of Lord Yama/Lord of death, unfortunately, none of the emissaries are willing to approach me after listening to my countless sins, they are too anxious to get closer to the grave sinner like me, they feel my touch would impure them. Oh! Pathithapavan/the savior of the distressed Jeeva, and I am a grave sinner who did not utilize the precious birth as a human to achieve four Purusharththa such as Dharma/righteousness, Arththa/wealth, Kama/desire, and Moksha/liberation, I was chasing after material and physical pleasures of fleeting nature, alas! I have never been satisfy with them.  Oh! Prabho, I did not practice devotion, worship of your lotus feet, or listen to your sacred names or glorious legends or I did not practice austerities, vows, celibacy, Shama, Dhama, Sathyam, Dhaya, Dhanam, Dhyanam, Astheyam, Ahimsa, Arjjavam, etc. Oh! Prabho, my excessive attachment to possession, wealth, richness, money, fame, children, wife, companion, and relatives constantly pushed me to three kinds of grief. Oh! Prabho, you are that supreme Bhramam that resides as a soul in the Jeeva, you are flawless, unblemished, pure, free from dualities/grief and sorrow, gain and loss,  you are the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, Chiththa, Ahamkara, vital air, Karma and Gnanendhriyas, etc. I have already surrendered at your lotus feet,  kindly liberate me from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence and repeated births.”

Chapter – 207-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The complete surrender to Lord Sri Hari and observance of austerities protects the Jeeva/soul from three kinds of grief

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Madhav, Oh! Prabho, I am the precious jewel among the distressed Jeeva/Pathitha Shiromani, each and every hair in my body is sinful, hence I haven’t seen any sinner like me.  Oh! Prabho, 1) the Brahmin Ajamila who abandoned the Bhramanic way of life, aged parents, and family for a prostitute in the forest, 2) the Ganika/prostitute who was left alone in the later years of age was bought a parrot from the devotee of Lord Sri Hari, and mere listening to the ‘Sri Ramanama’ got liberated from the grief of worldly existence,  3) the King of birds Jatayu, a sincere devotee of Lord Sri Rama, fought with the demon King Ravana who abducted Devi Sita while Rama and Lakshman were absent in the hermitage.  Jatayu was brutally wounded while trying to protect Devi Sita from the clutches of Ravan, and eventually left mortal coil in the lap of Lord Sri Rama 4) the hunter who shot at the feet of Lord Krishna while preparing to leave for the supreme abode, and 5) Nriga the King who got cursed to become lizard from the Bhramin, are minor sinners, they fed on my leftover kind of sins, so they must be sincere to me, you can enquire them about me.  Oh! Prabho, I have committed grave sins by words, mind, and deed, therefore I am superior to all those sinners, but I haven’t achieved your grace, they all have got liberated before my turn, hence I am ashamed to call myself a superior sinner because you have considered them grave sinners and liberated them from the sufferings and grief, in this way I have made a laughing stock of myself before them. Oh! Prabho, kindly remember the declaration of Veda and the Scriptures, they highly praise you as Pathithta Pavan/savior of the distressed Jeeva, so that I can get rid of the impurities of mind such as lust, desire, ego, jealousy, anger, pride, Ahamkara and Mamakara, and excessive attachment to possession, richness, wealth, money, children, wife, relative, companion, etc. I can get rid of interest in worldly matters of infinite name, sound, touch, passion, smell, and appearances, eventually, I can attain the superior state of ‘Sharanagathi’/complete surrender. Oh! Prabho, If not, kindly leave your title ‘Pathitha Pavan’ and reject my plea.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, how did I know you are the protector of the distressed? If I did not experience your kindness, how did I know? Hence, kindly liberate me from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence, so that I shall consider you as my father. Oh! Prabho, the prostitute/Ganika, Byadh/hunter Guha, Ajamila/twice born Bhramin, Geedh/Jatayu wasn’t grave sinners like me, but all of them got liberated from the ocean of worldly existence, if you are true to your vows as the protector of the distressed people, kindly liberate me, I am a grave sinner. Oh! Prabho, either protect your vow to your devotees by liberating me from the sufferings or give up your title of ‘Pathitha Pavan’. Oh! Prabho, I have heard from the scriptures and Veda that you have released all your devotees from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence and provided ‘Sri Baikund’/The supreme abode where there are no three kinds of grief, now I am a grave sinner, distressed, helpless, taken shelter at your lotus feet, and you are the savior of the distressed soul, so the real challenge is before you.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, kindly liberate me from the grief of worldly existence, I am lustful, wanderlust, wicked, deceitful, and cruel by nature, I have committed various sins by words, mind, and deeds. I am impure, my heart is darker than charcoal, and I am drenched in lust, desire, ego, pride, jealousy, anger, Ahamkara, and Mamakara. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, I did not use the three important phases of life: childhood/Balyavastha, adulthood/Kishoravastha, and youth to worship your lotus feet or I did not practice devotion or sing in praise your glories. Oh! Prabho, I have reached the later years of age, my limbs are fragile, my memories are weak, my senses are not functioning like before, my movements are restricted, I am miserable, I need someone’s help to perform the routine, and my limbs are not co-operating with the brain, Oh! Prabho, I have taken shelter at your lotus feet, kindly liberate me from the grief, or do whatever you feel. Oh! Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Sri Hari, Oh! Karunamaya, you are the creator, preserver, and destroyer of the Universe and its living and non-living things, if you have forgotten your title ‘The protector of the distressed and desolate people/Pathithapavan’, what shall I do? I am a helpless, ignorant, dull-minded Jeeva/soul, bound by the ‘Karma’ and attributes/Rajasik, Thamasik, and Swathik, of several births. Where shall I go? Whom should I ask to protect me? Oh! Prabho, the four Vedas/Rig, Yajur, Sama, Atharvana highly recommend that you are Sharanagathavathsal/savior of distressed, ultimate asylum, and Pathitha Pavan, etc. and you are too compassionate and kind to your devotees. Oh! Prabho, the sacred scriptures describe your endless glories and your kindness to Ganika, Byadh, Ajamila, who got liberated from their sins. Oh! Prabho, you have been at the rescue of your devotees at all times, doesn’t matter if they are pure or impure, far away or close, you have been at their call whether it is full of love or without it, you have been to the call of your ardent devotees through Homa, Japa, Thapa, Yajja, Manthra, Thanthra or without any of these. Oh! Prabho, you have never disappointed your devotees, you have been always enthusiastic to protect your devotees, hence whenever they remember your sacred names, you would hurry to release them from three kinds of grief. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Kripanidhi, you have not made any delays to attend to the cries of your devotees. Oh! Sri Hari, you have endless virtues and names as well. Oh! Prabho, kindly assume your role of ‘Pathithapavan/protector of distressed’ and liberate me from the grief and sufferings of worldly existence/Thapathraya. Oh! Prabho, I am your sincere servant, tired of observing austerities, kindly protect me.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Madhav, why did you drive me afar from you? Oh! Prabho, you are the supreme soul that resides as a soul in the Jeeva, and you are the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, Ahamkara, Prana/Vital air, Karma, and Gnanendhriyas/sensory organs etc. Oh! Prabho, the Veda highly emphasizes that you reside as the Prana/vital in the middle of the heart, and you are the knower of All. Oh! Prabho, the Samsarasagara/ocean of worldly existence is the sum of good and evil, unfortunately, I was caught up amongst the evil, I have got attached to infinite worldly matters of sound, touch, passion, appearances, and smell of fleeting nature, thereby constantly pushed myself into agony and pain.  Oh! Prabho, you are the savior of the distressed soul, you have liberated Gheedh/Jatayu, Byadh/hunter Guha, Ganika/prostitute, Gajendra, etc. but you left me alone to suffer in the worldly existence, it makes me feel miserable. Prabho, kindly do not ignore my cries, I have already surrendered at your lotus feet, if you leave me unnoticed in the ocean of worldly existence, I have no one to protect, the thought itself makes me feel horrible. Oh! Prabho, I am a grave sinner, I have committed several sins by words, mind, and deeds, but you are the savior of the distressed and desolate people, then why are you leaving me alone? Oh! Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, I have wasted the precious birth as a human achieved after the piousness of several births, Oh! Prabho, I did not practice devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, or I did not serve preceptors, Santh, and Mahathma noble souls, or I did not visit the sacred Vraja/Mathura land and lived. Oh! Prabho, I did not use the precious birth as a human, I did not practice Shama, Dhama, Sathyam, Dhaya, Dhanam, Dhyanam, Swadhyaya, Astheyam, Arjjavam, non-violence, truthfulness, celibacy, meditation, contemplation, worship of Lord Sri Hari, association  with the Santh, Mahathma, noble souls, or service to preceptors, etc. Oh! Prabho, I was wandering aimlessly chasing after material and physical pleasures like the stray dog in search of food, I have never tried to please the supreme Lord Sri Hari, singing in praise of his glorious legends and sacred names. Oh! Giridharlal, I did not make an effort to please you with austerities and devotion. I did not shed tears listening to your compassion and kindness to your devotees, I did not dance singing in praise of you, Oh! Prabho, I have not listened to the glorious Srimad Bhagavath with devotion and faith, I did not invite the devotees of the Lord to my house or I did not serve them or I did not wash their feet. Oh! Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, I have been chasing after worldly matters of infinite sound, touch, passion, smell, and appearances for so long, hurling into different wombs, but I have not been satisfied or happy yet. I don’t know how many births I have taken in different Yonis/wombs, my desires are endless and uncontrollable, I have been wandering aimlessly chasing after pleasing my senses day and night. Oh! Prabho, I have been drenched in lust, desire, ego, pride, jealousy, anger, Ahamkara and Mamakara, hence I have thrown myself into constant grief and agony, taking birth in the different Yonis/wombs, listening to the fourteen types of world/Swarga, Rasathal and Earth, Alas! my impurities of the mind like the fire did not put off. Oh! Prabho, I have been excessively attached to possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, companion, and relatives, which are like flames that constantly put me into grief and agony. Oh! Prabho, I am ignorant, dull-minded, hence I did not practice devotion at your lotus feet, or observe austerities, celibacy, non-violence, truthfulness, kindness, Swadhayaya/study of scriptures and Veda, self-control, service to Lord Sri Hari and devotees, selfless service to preceptors and Mahathmas. I have been kept chasing material and physical pleasures, like pouring ghee into flames. Oh! Prabho, I am an unfortunate Jeeva, kept wandering aimlessly all over the Earth chasing after the material and physical pleasures of fleeting nature, finally completely dejected to notice the flames of infinite sound, smell, appearance, touch, and passion like flames spread all over the Universe and all the unfortunate Jeevas are pampered in it relentlessly. Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Gopala, Oh! Prabho, I have danced enough wearing the Pyjama of lust, desire, ego, jealousy, anger, pride, Ahamkara and Mamakara, wearing the beads of worldly matters, adorned in Mahamoharoopi Noopura/illusion as anklets, and I was dancing to the tune of ignorance, and arrogance. Oh! Prabho, my mind was completely under the influence of ignorance, which kept beating my mind like a drum. I was rolling through the streams of wicked and deceitful people. The Thrishna/Mrigathrishna/illusion of water in the desert/ was producing beating sounds inside the heart. I am decorated in the waistband of illusion/Maya, my forehead is decorated with the Thilak of Lobha/excessive desire. Oh! Prabho, I do not remember how many births I have taken in the air, water, and on Earth, I have no count of the births taken, and the Karmas performed, Oh! Nandhalala, kindly remove my ignorance.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, I have worn out of worldly matters, I have not been in the association of Santh, Mahathma, and noble souls, who constantly engages in singing in praise of your sacred names and glorious legends. I have been soaked in the infinite name, sound, passion, appearance, and smell in the Universe that has fleeting nature, hence I constantly hurled myself into illusion, ignorance, and arrogance, I had never thought of how to get rid of grief and sufferings of worldly existence or cross the ocean of worldly existence and repeated births. Chapter – 198-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The fruitfulness of life to achieve the four Purusharththa/Dharma-righteousness, Arththa-wealth, Kama-desire, and Moksha- liberation from the worldly existence and repeated births

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Madhav, Oh! Prabho, I am a grave sinner, even after achieving the precious birth as a human, I did not strive to attain the four Purusharththa/Dharma, Arththa, Kama, and Moksha. I did not do any human deeds, so who will protect me? Oh! Prabho, all those creatures from elephants to flee like big to small creatures on the Earth have to undergo the fruit of Karma, the good deeds bring an abundance of goodness and prosperity, and the evil deeds bring extreme grief and agony. Oh! Prabho, you have given me the precious birth as a human and advised me to follow righteousness prescribed in the sacred scriptures, Varnna and Ashrama Dharma/ the four classes of people and their duties and responsibilities such as  1) Bhramin to perform austerities, vows, Swadhyaya, Shamadhamadhi for the welfare of the Universe and its people 2) Kshathriya to protect the borders from the enemies and intruders, ensure safety and security of the people of the Kingdom 3) Vaishya to perform commerce, farming, poultry, etc. to ensure good living and the prosperity of the people 4) Shudras are the service classes who offer service to the three classes to perform their duties to achieve the four Purusharththa,.  The Ashrama Dharma such as 1)Bhramacharya to practice austerities, vows, celibacy, swadhyaya, Shama, Dhama, Sathyam, Dhaya, Dhanam, Ahimsa, Arjjavam, etc. 2) Grihasthashram to follow spiritual and religious rites, give birth to offspring to perform austerities, devotion, worship, and practice of Shamadhamadhi 3) Vanaprasthashram while living in the Grihasthashram after the completion of duties and responsibilities strive to an advanced state of spirituality, the practice of renunciation 4) and the final state is Sanyasashram to achieve the supreme Bhramam, by the practice of meditation, contemplation, austerities, vows, penance, free from the worldly matters. Oh! Prabho, I did not follow the scriptures, and Veda, how did I cross the ocean of worldly existence? Who will protect me from the sufferings and grief of Samsara? Oh! Jagathpathi, Oh! Jagadheeshwar, I did not practice devotion or worship of your lotus feet, Oh! Karunasagar, Oh! Kripalu, kindly protect me, I have no one to protect me. Oh! Prabho, I shall promise upon your lotus feet, you would laugh at me watching my pitiable state. Oh! Prabho, I am certain that Lord Yama will send all his dreadful emissaries to my deathbed, they will roam all over the village searching for me, but none would dare to spell my name because of the fear of the sin, alas! even the Chandalas would hesitate to spell my name, at last, the emissaries of Yama would get tired of searching for me, they would find me and threaten me with crushing teeth and pointing various weapons against me, they drag me to the abode of Yama,  taking me for a visit to the various types of hell, beating me to death, how did I describe the hellish torture? Oh! Prabho, while the emissaries of Yama beat me to death, Alas! I would forget to utter your sacred ‘Sri Ramanama’, instead, I would be calling for my children and wife, eventually, my relatives and family would decorate my lifeless body of mine with great interest, and drop me at the funeral ground, not even a decent cloth on the lifeless body, thus I would lose a precious birth as a human to practice devotion as well as the opportunity to achieve the four Purusharththa/Dharma-righteousness, Arththa-wealth, Kama-desire, and Moksha- liberation from the worldly existence and repeated births.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “  Oh! Madhau, I am shameless, ignorant, and dull-minded, I have wasted the precious birth as a human which is achieved after the piousness of several births, I have been drenched in lust, desire, ego, pride, jealousy, anger, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, chasing after the worldly matters of possession, richness, wealth, money, fame, children, wife, companion and relatives of momentary nature, therefore my excessive attachment to worldly matters thrown me into repeated births. Oh! Prabho, all those infinite creatures on Earth, water, and air, feeling pity on me, after all these, I have not stopped chasing after the worldly matters, without knowing good and evil, I have been kept following immoral deeds without fear or shame. Oh! Prabho, I have realized that I have driven afar from your lotus feet, due to my excessive lust, desire, ego, anger, jealousy, pride, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, I did not practice devotion or worship of your lotus feet, austerities, vow, celibacy, Swadhyaya/study of scriptures and Veda, self-control, non-violence, charity, kindness, etc. Oh! Prabho, who will protect this stray dog like me? Kindly get this ugly creature tied at your doorsteps, so that you won’t receive complaints from others.”

Chapter – 196-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva and   is the savior of the ocean of worldly existence

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, you are Pathitha Pavan/ the savior of the distressed and desolate people, you are too kind and compassionate to your devotees, the Veda and sacred scriptures highly eulogize your glories. Oh! Prabho, your childhood friend Sudhama/pious Bhramin, a penniless and staunch devotee of you arrived at your doorsteps, you rushed to receive him with endless joy and offered him the highest of honor, you have served him along with Goddess Sri Rukmini. Oh! Prabho, while spending the whole night talking about the good olden days spend in the hermitage of Maharishi Sandheepani, you have seized a bundle of ragged upper cloth from the skeleton body of Sudhama, you have taken a handful of puffed rice from the ragged cloth bundle, and tasted it with great pleasure. Oh! Prabho, you have provided an abundance of wealth in return for the two mouthfuls of puffed rice to Sudhama. Oh! Prabho, Devi Dhraupadhi who was humiliated in the large assembly of Kaurava, the younger brother of Duryodhan seized her clothes and Devi Dhraupadhi cried out for help in the large assembly, but none was heard, Oh! Prabho, Oh! Dwarakanath, she called out for you, instantly you have provided mountain-sized clothes and protected Devi Dhraupadhi from further disgrace. Oh! Prabho, you have brought back the life of the son of Maharishi Sandheepani from the abode of Yama and offered him as ‘Gurudhakshina’ to your preceptor. Oh! Prabho, I am exhausted, worn out of grief and sufferings of worldly existence/Thapathraya/three kinds of grief, why don’t you shower your compassionate grace upon me?”

Chapter – 195-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The significance of devotion and worship at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, you have liberated the king of birds Jatayu who was brutally wounded while fighting with the demon Ravana and trying to protect Devi Sita from his clutches. Oh! Sri Hari, you have liberated the hunter Guha who served you relentlessly, and the elephant Gajendra who fought alone against the crocodile that caught on his leg, Gajendra found he was deserted by family, companions, and relatives, and he continued to fight all alone for several years, finally understood that he has no one to protect Lord Sri Hari, he cried out for Lord, and you have rushed to protect him leaving the celestial vehicle Garuda, and liberated Gajendra and the crocodile as well. Oh! Prabho, you have liberated Devi Ahalya, Gautama Patni with your dust particle, she was cursed by Sage Gautama, to become a rock for her mischievousness, was released from the curse, and achieved a divine beautiful form. Oh! Prabho, the prostitute/Ganika, at a later year of age brought a parrot from the devotee of Lord Sri Hari, was taken good care of it, by mere listening to the ‘Sri Ramanama’ recital of the parrot, Ganika achieved liberation from the grief of worldly existence. Oh! Prabho, the Bhramin Ajamila who abandoned his elderly parents, family, and Vedic way of living, for a prostitute in the forest, at the death bed he called out to his younger son ‘Narayana’, by mere uttering the sacred name ‘Narayana’ he has attained liberation. Oh! Prabho, you have liberated all of them, but none of them were grave sinners like me, I am an ignorant and dull-minded poet. Oh! Prabho, you are the savior of distressed and desolate people, how do I know without experiencing your might if you don’t liberate me? Kindly uphold your status of ‘Pathithapavan’ and liberate me from the suffering of worldly existence.”

Chapter – 194-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The supreme Lord resides as the soul is all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, the knower of All

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Antharyami/The supreme Lord who resides as a soul/indestructible Purusha in the Jeeva is eternal, which is the sole source of functioning of the mind, intellect, Chiththa, Ahamkara, Karma and Gnanendhriyas/sensory organs, Prana/vital air. Oh! Karunamaya/ocean of mercy, I am wicked and deceitful, you are the knower of All, how can I hide my impure nature from you? You are omnipresent, all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva. Oh! Probho, you have given me the rarest birth as a human and nurtured me while I was burning in the Jadaragni/suffering in the tiny space dark womb of the mother, I have been ungrateful to you I did not practice the worship or meditate upon you. Oh! Prabho, I have been drenched in worldly matters of possession, richness, wealth, fame, money, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. and I have been chasing after physical pleasures, Alas! after all these, I did get satisfied or none my desires were always been uncontrollable, like the pig that keeps feeding and breeding in the dirt. Oh! Prabho, I did not take pleasure in the association of Santh, Mahathma, and noble souls, I did feel bored in the association of Mahathmas who constantly engages in the singing in praise of Lord Sri Hari, Alas! I found great pleasure in the wicked and deceitful people soaked in worldly matters. Oh! Prabho, I am an unfortunate Jeeva driven away from the worship of Lord Sri Hari, I did not take shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, instead, I was singing in praise of the rich and wealthy. Oh! Prabho, I am a grave sinner, did not practice Swadhyaya/recitation of Veda and scriptures, austerities, Shama, Dhama, Sathyam, Dhaya, Dhyanam, Dhanam, Ahimsa, Astheya, Arjjavam, etc. I was chasing after wealth, possession, fame, richness, money, wife, children, companion, relatives, etc., hence I am the leader of sinners, Oh! Sri Pathi/consort of Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, Oh! Prabho,  kindly listen to my cries I have set an example of myself as the gravest sinner.”

Chapter – 193-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –The worldly matters are momentary/Khshanabhangura, cannot provide permanent bliss

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Gusayi, there is no distressed or desolate soul like me, Oh! Prabho, I have practiced with all my heart to get rid of the impurities of my mind such as lust, desire, ego, pride, anger, and jealousy, Ahamkara and Mamakara, unfortunately, I did not get control over my senses. Oh! Prabho, I have realized the ‘Paramarththa Thaththva’/the absolute truth that I was chasing after the material and physical pleasures of fleeting nature, which cannot provide permanent bliss,  they have thrown me into constant grief and agony. Oh! Prabho, it is ironic that I wanted to get rid of grief from poverty, hence I have accumulated possessions, wealth, richness, and money in abundance through immoral ways, and wasted precious birth as a human, Alas! it pushed me into constant fear and anxiety, moreover, it hurled me into repeated births and suffering of worldly existence. Oh! Probho, I have been excessively attached to wealth, richness, possession, money, children, wife, etc. I have been chasing after material and physical pleasures, and the interest in infinite matters of sound, passion, touch, smell, and appearance,  caught me into constant trouble, like the fish getting into the trap by its attraction to the worm on the hook, Alas! I did not notice the noose of death hanging above my head. Oh! Prabho, I have wasted my precious life as a human chasing after impermanent material matters/Khshanabhangura, like a person who dreamt of treasures received in abundance, got out of sleep, and found empty-handed. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Giridharlal, I did not practice devotion, meditation, contemplation, austerities, penance, vows, celibacy, truthfulness, non-violence, etc. I have been chasing after the worldly matters of impermanent nature, I am a grave sinner, I have no one to protect me. Chapter – 191-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Sharanagathi/The complete surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari to get rid of sins

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, I am the leader of distressed and desolate people, no one could compete with me in committing sins by word, mind, and deed. Oh! Prabho, you have liberated the twice-born/Bhramin Ajamila who uttered your sacred name ‘Narayana’ on his deathbed, Oh! Prabho, kindly give me that assurance to me as well, so that once again my faith would get cemented, so that I can call out for all those sinners to recite your sacred name, thereby getting rid of the sufferings of worldly existence. Oh! Prabho, if you promise to liberate me by uttering your sacred names, I may achieve great enthusiasm by listening to your promise once again, and I can proceed with the same fervor and bliss to others to encourage them to recite your glorious names. Oh! Prabho, I would encourage the people to choose the righteous path of ‘Sharanagathi’/complete surrender at your lotus feet, I would prove myself as a great merchant who sells the sacred chant of Lord Sri Hari, kindly promise me once, so that I would call out all those sinners who were drenched in worldly matters of fleeting nature, chasing after material and physical pleasures, excessively attached to wealth, possession, money, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. without the knowledge of ‘Paramarththa Thaththva’/The absolute truth/ all the material matters are impermanent, and the soul is permanent/. Oh! Prabho, I would attract the assembly of sinners who have been exhausted by the three kinds of grief/Thapathraya of worldly existence, now I am alone at your doorsteps earnestly waiting for your compassionate grace when I visit next time, I will bring more distressed and destitute people. I would bring all those sinners who have committed sins by words, deeds, and minds competing with each other, and throw them at your lotus feet, and that would be my offering to you. Oh! Prabho, I have accumulated mountain-sized sins with the expectation that you would forgive me, and liberate me from the sufferings of worldly existence, Oh! Prabho kindly liberates the assembly of sinners at the earliest.”

Chapter – 190-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Lord Sri Hari is the savior of the distressed and desolate soul/Pathitha Pavan

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, I am the King of sinners, no one would commit sins by words, mind, and action like me if so kindly bring them to my notice. Oh! Prabho, the hunter Guha, Pakshiraj Jatayu/king of birds, and Puthana who rushed to feed venomous milk to little Krishna, was sucked out Prana/vital air while squeezing out milk from her bosom, she wasn’t a grave sinner like Ajamila and Ganika, the twice-born/Bhramin who abandoned his aged parents and family, Vedic way of living for a prostitute in the forest, and the Ganika who brought a parrot from the devotee of Lord Sri Hari was taken good care of it, and by mere listening to the ‘Sri Ramana Chant’ from the parrot, the aged Ganika/prostitute achieved liberation from the worldly existence. Oh! Prabho, I am the gravest sinner of all, I could hear from the people highly speaking about my immoral deeds, so if the sinners are the King, and I am that emperor of sinners. Oh! Prabho, so far you have been known as ‘Pathitha Pavan’/savior of the distressed and desolate people, after listening to my cries and list of mountain-sized sins would you liberate me? Chapter – 189-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The impurities of mind such as arrogance and ignorance put halt to the functioning of the intellect, and wisdom

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Hari,  I am the King of distressed people, I have been in association with wicked and deceitful people, I have engaged in criticizing and complaining about the people around me, and I hurt them by word, mind, and deed. The sounds of cribbing and gossips are the sounds of disgraceful music in my kingdom of life. Thrishna/thirst is my city, my endless desires/Kama, are my warriors, and the sense organs are the sword. Oh! Prabho, the desires/Kama, and Krodha/anger are my two gatekeepers who keep giving me morally wrong ideas, my pride is uncontrollable like an untamed elephant, and my greed is all visible on my forehead resembling an umbrella. Oh! Prabho, I have been in the association of wicked and deceitful, they are my army. Moha/desire and Maya/illusion singing in praise of me like the royal musicians sing in praise of their King, in this way, I have been parting my sins with others too. Oh! Prabho, I have cemented the morally wrong ways of life, thus I have accumulated mountain-sized sins.”

Chapter – 188-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The impurities of mind such as desire, ego, lust, anger, pride and jealousy are the fighters in the Kingdom of Maya/illusion

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Sri Hari, Oh! Prabho, I am the king of destitute and distressed people/Pathithesh, no one can stand up to me. I am living in the world of ‘Mahamoha’/utter illusion, where there is nothing is real, and everything has short living nature like dream, those infinite sounds, passion, appearance, touch and smell/Shabdha, Sparsha, Rasa, Roopa, and Gandha. I am seated on the throne of desires/Asha, and there is no end to my desires, my throne of desire is decorated with the Dhambharoopi/pride as an umbrella. I have ignorance and arrogance as two servants who always follow my orders, and they describe my ill-fame to others. I have Kama/lust and Krodha/anger as two ministers, they keep advising me in their own ways, Oh! Prabho, the doubtfulness/Sandheh, and the dualities/Dhvandha, such as grief and joy, gain and loss, happiness and sorrow, etc. won’t leave me for a second, they follow me day and night, and they have a great influence on my intellect. Hence, they do not allow me to follow any customary rites as prescribed in the sacred texts and Veda. Lobha/greed is my shopkeeper, I accumulate all the material matters from him. Oh! Prabho, Moha/desire is my sincere servant, my arrogance is my doorkeeper, and my pride does not allow me to think with clarity. I am seated on the Mamatha/mine, my and myself/ as my cushion on the throne, I am aimlessly wandering in the Kingdom of Maya/illusion. Oh! Prabho, Thrishna/thirst, to acquire material and physical pleasure is my female servant, she does not allow me to move freely, hence I feel exhausted. Oh! Prabho, immoral deeds are my servants, they influence me to follow the improper ways of religious and spiritual rites, and perform deeds that are morally wrong. Oh! Prabho, my ambitions have the swiftness of a horse, I have the pride of an untamed elephant, and my falsehood and immorality are chariot and charioteer as well. Oh! Prabho, I have not followed intellect, I always follow my heart, and its desires and continuous fears are my warriors, and wickedness is my messenger. Oh! Prabho, Lord Yama shut the abode of hell before me, he does not approve of a grave sinner like me in his abode. Oh! Prabho, I have committed various grave sins mountain-sized, they are my warriors, so people are looking at me in utter disgrace and laughing at me, like the people imprisoned by me singing in praise of me/like the royal singers sing in praise of their King. Chapter – 187-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of austerities and devotion to get rid of impurities of the mind

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “ Oh! Madhav, there is no grave sinner like me on this Earth, I am impure by thoughts, words, and deeds, I did not observe non-violence, truthfulness, or righteousness, I am deceitful, wicked, and cruel, and take great pleasure in gossip, I hurt others by words, deeds, and thought, I was chasing after physical and material matters of impermanent nature, I have taken great pleasure in the worldly matters. Oh! Prabho, I have consumed all those unwanted and intoxicated things which don’t give any pleasures or never get satisfied, on the other hand, it pushed me into hellish torture. Oh! Chapter – 186-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Lord Sri Hari is supreme bliss personified and resides as a soul in the Jeeva/living thing and non-living

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh!~ Prabho, Oh! Madhav, I am that jewel on the distressed and desolate people/Pathithashiromani, Oh! Prabho, you have liberated the twice-born/Bhramin Ajamila effortlessly, he had committed not even half of the sins accumulated by me. I have wasted my entire life drenched in worldly matters of possession, wealth, richness, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. of fleeting nature. I was soaked in lust, desire, ego, jealousy, pride, anger, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, I did not take up austerities, penance, meditation, vows, celibacy, truthfulness, non-violence, self-control, Swadhyaya, Astheyam, Arjjavam, etc. I have been chasing the diversified matters in the Universe, I was attached to infinite sounds, touch, passion, appearance, and smell/Shabdha, Sparsha, Rasa, Roopa, and Gandha. In this way, I have completely driven afar from the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, which is the sole source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, Ahamkara, Prana/vital air, Karma, and Gnanendhriyas/senses. Oh! Prabho, kindly liberate me from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence or accept your failure upon me. Oh! Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Sharanagathi-complete surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari

Chapter – 185-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Sharanagathi-complete surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, if you check the list of sinners, I would be the first one named on it, the rest of them have committed sins now and then, Oh! Prabho, I am a born sinner, you have liberated the twice-born Ajamila who abandoned the Vedic way of living, aged parents and family for a prostitute in the forest, and lived in the forest for several years following immoral activities, finally, he got liberated by uttering ‘Narayana’ at the death bed. Oh! Prabho, the hunter Guha served Lord Sri Ramachandra and Lakshman at heart’s content and achieved liberation. The Ganika/prostitute who was deserted by everyone in the later years of age, took great care of a parrot bought from the devotee of Lord Hari, by mere listening to the recital of Sri Ramanama, the prostitute achieved liberation from grief. Oh! Prabho, the female demon Poothana who was assigned by Kamsa arrived at the Gokul, disguised as a beautiful woman resembling Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, but her intention was to feed you with venomous milk, you pulled her Prana/vital air while feeding with the breast milk, surprisingly she got liberated by worldly existence, she has gained the equal status of Devi Yasodha. Oh! Prabho, I feel dejected watching all of them get liberated while I was suffering the grief of worldly existence, Oh! Prabho, I confirm that there is no one utterly shameful sinner like me, I am grief-stricken, why the Prana/vital air/soul is not leaving this body? Why are you calling yourself Pathitha Pavan/savior of the distressed soul, and who is that grave sinner you have liberated from the grief?  you haven’t listened to my cries yet.”
