Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter -  6 - 2

Chapter – 2 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 21 - 44

Vidura speaks “ Oh! Bharatharshabha, the performance of righteous deeds brings happiness and serenity of mind, the absence of the performance of the religious and spiritual rites causes the Jeeva regrets in all life. Oh! Rajan, a wise King should have Shadgunas/six attributes that are Gnanam, Aishwaryam, Shakthi, Balam, Veeryam, and Tejas, and they should have profound knowledge of  Sthanam, Vridhdhi, and Kshayam. Oh! Rajan, a wise ruler should have good control and knowledge of the wealth and expenditures, he should have a specific reason for Harsha and Krodha as well, he should be responsible and take good control over the activities which needed his supervision. Oh! Rajan, a wise ruler distribute the wealth of the Kingdom with its subjects, he should have thorough knowledge about the wealth of the Kingdom is owned by all, it is not his personal wealth; he is Maheepathi who has Cchathra/umbrella over the throne, to perform the duties and responsibilities for the progress of the Kingdom its subjects. Oh! Rajan, twice-born know each other in the society, the husband knows about his wife, King knows about his Minister, but the King knows himself. Oh! Rajan, do not release an enemy who is detained for the death sentence, if so he may cause a threat to you. Oh! Rajan, it is advisable to control anger against deities, Kings, twice-born, elderly people, children, and people who are suffering from illnesses. Oh! Rajan, the dull-minded engages constant conflicts, therefore, arguments and conflicts should be avoided; the absence of conflicts would bring fame and keep you away from unnecessary troubles as well. Oh! Rajan, a master who gets angry for no reason, and unpleasant would be abandoned by all, like a wife discard an impotent husband. Oh! Rajan, it is not true that the intelligence would bring wealth and dull-mindedness would cause loss of wealth. The reason for this uniqueness is known to the enlightened soul, others do not understand the reason for it. Oh! Rajan, a dull-minded/ignorant person disrespects Vidhya/knowledge, virtues, age, intellect, wealth, clan, and enlightened people. Oh! Rajan, listen to me these kinds of people bring constant afflictions 1) a wicked person 2) ignorant 3) person who is jealous of other's progress 4) the person who does not follow Dharma 5) person who speaks unpleasant words 6) the person who gets angry easily. Oh! Rajan, these qualities attract everyone 1) honesty and uprightness 2) performance of charities 3) person who sincerely follows the spiritual and religious rites 4) the person who has perfect control over words. Oh! Rajan, a person who is truthful, skilled, grateful, intelligent, and enthusiastic would earn several followers and companions, even though they have little wealth. Oh! Rajan, there are seven types of fuel for the auspiciousness; they are 1) endurance 2) controlled sense 3) forbearance 4) purity 5) kindness 6) pleasantness in the talk, and 7) compassion. Oh! Rajan, there are people who do not believe in sharing wealth or knowledge, deceitful, ungrateful, and shameless, these kinds of people should be abandoned. Oh! Rajan, it is difficult to get sleep after imposing troubles on an innocent, it would be like sleeping near the snake pit. Oh! Rajan, there are people who should be worshiped as deities, capable to destroy your Yoga and Kshema, if they get unhappy and humiliated. Oh! Rajan, the success of the tasks is difficult to achieve that depends on Sthree, careless people, lowly class, and unknown people/ignorant. Oh! Rajan, the regions which are ruled by Sthree, deceitful people and children are like the ferry made of stone that sinks instantly.”

Chapter – 1 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 1 – 20

Vidura speaks “Oh! Bhratharshabha, the simple act of receiving an elderly guest rising from the seat would restore the Prana in the person. The moment the person receives the elderly person raising from the seat and greets would bring the Prana to the normal state. Oh! Rajan, it is the duty of the householder to receive the elderly guests/Sajjana with respect, wash his feet, enquire about his welfare, and share the information, after that serve a decent meal to the Sajjana visited the house. Oh! Rajan, The intellectuals and people profound in Veda abandon the persons who have impurities like Lobham, Bhayam, and unwillingness to offer contributions. The householder who did not offer Arkhyam, Padhyam, Madhuparkam, and cow as a charity to a Vedic scholar, his life is considered as unfruitful. Therefore it is the duty of the Grihastha to receive the twice-born with great respect and offer an abundance of charities. Oh! Rajan, a Grihastha should not offer water or receive the people 1)Physician 2) person who produces weapons 3) thief 4) wicked 5) drunkard 6) person who forced to commit Bhroonahathya/killing fetus 7) warrior 8) Brahmin who sells Veda for livelihood.  Oh! Rajan, a twice-born should not engage in the selling of the following items 1) salt 2) cooked meal 3) curd 4) milk 5) Honey 6) Oil 7) Ghee 8) sesame seeds 9) Meat 10) fruits and vegetables, 11) clothes 12) perfumes and 13) Sugar.  Oh! Rajan, the flawless Bikshu is 1) the person who does not get angry over anything 2) finds no difference in stone and gold 3) a person who is free from grief and gloominess 4) a person who does not make companion or enter conflict with them 5) Person who consider grace and disgrace as the same 6) person who does not have anything favorite and unfavorite in this world. Oh! Rajan, the illustrious Tapasvi is 1) the person who depends on the fruits, vegetables, grains, and herbs, that are available in the forest. 2) The person who has perfect control over sense 3) The person who protects Agni by performing fire sacrifices 4) person who lives in the woods and kind to his guests.  Oh! Rajan, do not harm the intelligent people and live peacefully, the intelligent people’s hands are too long to reach wherever you hide, and will not keep quiet until they settle the scores. Oh! Rajan, do not keep faith on the unreliable people and get into trouble, and do not trust a person fully even though he is honest, the fear out of the blind trust is capable to uproot a person. Oh! Rajan, the nature of a respectable person is 1) free of jealous 2) person who protects wife 3) a person who share things with others 4) person who speaks pleasantly 5) a person who is amiable 6) person who speak pleasantly to women, although do not trust them fully. Oh! Rajan, the women are most venerable and deserved to be protected in all circumstances, if they are 1)highly devoted and engages in the veneration of deities, guests, Go and Vipra, 2) They are fortunate ones sincerely follow customary rites 3) pure 4) women who are jewel and auspiciousness of the homes. Oh! Rajan, the administration of the Kingdom should be done under the supervision of the father, administration of the kitchen should be done under the supervision of Mother, and the protection of cows should be under the trustworthy person. The supervision of the agriculture should be under the control of the householder, the Vaishyas who visits the home should be received by the servants, and the twice-born who visits the home should be received by your sons. Oh! Rajan, Agni, Kshatriya and Metal are initiated from the Water, Bhramin, and stone respectively. Hence, the brilliance of the Agni loses in the water, Kshatriya remains humble before Bhramin and Metal lose its sparkling with the touch of the stone. Oh! Rajan, the people who are born in the illustrious clan are like Agni, have supreme brilliance. They are like the fire hidden in the log; they do not show anger outwardly, they release anger only at the reasonable and appropriate time. Oh! Rajan, the King who does not reveal his topmost secrets not even to his close associates, but gathers all the information about the enemies through the spy, would attain auspiciousness and victory. Oh! Rajan, 1) do not reveal your secrets or plan of action to others before working on it. 2) Do not reveal the tasks which are work-in-progress to anyone 3) the tasks performed for earning Dharma and Arththa, should not reveal before it’s done. Oh! Rajan, the highly confidential matters should be discussed in these following locations 1) hilltop 2) open terrace of the palace 3) the place where there are no trees or plants. Oh! Bharatha, do not reveal the topmost secrets of the Kingdom to 1) the companion who is not intelligent 2) intelligent companion who has no control over sense. 3) Do not appoint a person as minister after thorough knowledge about him and his activities, because the minister is responsible for the safe-keeping of the treasures, wealth, and the secrets of the King. Oh! Rajan, a successful King is the one who performs tasks with high confidence and reveals it only after accomplishing the success in the task. The King who protects highly confidential matters within him would definitely achieve success. Oh! Rajan, the person who commits disgraceful deeds, would definitely face destruction.”
