Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham– Avadhootha Charya

Chapter – 10 – Avadhoothacharya

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the practice of an Avadhootha/mendicant who is attired in ragged clothes, or Kaupeena, has no interest in worldly desires or matters, live on alms received from the noble souls, sleeps in the woods or burial grounds, wander fearlessly, keep themselves serene always, take immense pleasure in the meditation and contemplation of supreme Bhramam and disperse themselves in a transcendental state. Oh! Jeeva, understand the fact that these Avadhootha does not show interest to take up the regime of the three worlds; they discard them as ‘Thrina’/grass, like  the movements of fishes does not make indifference to the ocean water,  Alas! the entire Bhramanda cannot distract the mind of an Avadhootha.

Oh! Mother, Oh! Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, you can freely move among the Jeevas, kindly do not approach me, because whoever under your clutches are  the slaves of comforts and luxuries, they cannot be Viraktha, the Avadhootha who has no desire for wealth, food, shelter or clothing has not relation with you. Avadhootha takes pleasure in the vessel made of leaves of Plasha, and they consume the Bhikshannam. The Yogeeshwara consider the Earth as his bed, his own hands as pillows, the sky as the roof, the cool wind as a fan, the moonlight as lantern and he takes great pleasure with the ‘Virakthi’ as his female companion, and sleep like a King.

The Yogeeshwaras are free from pride, jealous, ego, like impurities, they are contented with the Bhikshannam, keep themselves away from the crowd of the people, he acts independently, he never bothers about gain or loss, respect or disgrace, happiness or sorrows, pain or grief, and sincerely follows the Yogic way of living, he attires ragged clothes and takes a seat on the ground always immerses in Bhrmadhyanam which is supreme bliss provides the serenity of mind. The ordinary people mock at these Yogeeshwara and pass sarcastic comments “Is he Chandala or Bhramin or Shudra or Thapasa? Or is he a highly intelligent Yogeeshwara knower of various philosophies? After listening to all these, the Yogeeshwaras never get disappointed or angry, instead they move peacefully on their way.

Lord Bhrama created the serpents that have the nature of non-violence, gets its meal without any effort, he created the cows that take pleasures on the grass and sleeps on the floor, he created human with intellect, to cross the unfathomable ocean of worldly existence, and adopt Avadhoothavriththi to get rid of miseries and sorrows of worldly existence, and attain the Moksha. The Jeeva is created with the Thrigunas/Rajasik, Sathvik and Thamasik, the Yogeendhras win over these Trigunas and attain Moksha. The Yogeendras who are amiable, so even the animals in the forest would take shelter in them, they do not put hindrances to their Yoganidra, the Yogeendhras won’t get distracted with the nearness of them, even the animals in the woods won’t have the fear of them, and they would pleasingly crush their bodies on them with intense love and affection.  When did I get that fortune to live in the caves and hills of Himalayas, seated on the Padmasana posture, and contemplate upon that supreme Bhramam? When did I achieve the nearness of those antelopes in Yoga Nidra?

Oh! Jeeva, hands are the pure means of vessels, the Bhikshanna received as alms is the superior meal, the directions as clothes are vast and will not meet its ruin, the Mother Earth is the comfortable bed to sleep.   The noble-souls who have achieved the serenity of mind with the constant practice of meditation and contemplation upon that supreme Bhramam won’t find any displeasure or pleasure, gain or loss, happiness, or sorrow, pain or joy; eventually, they get washed off their sins as well as piousness. Oh! Matha: Medhini/Mother Earth, Oh! Thatha Marutha/wind as the father, Oh!  Sakha Agnideva/fire as a friend, Oh! Subandho Jala:/ water as relative, Oh! Bhrathar Vyoma/sky as a companion, I shall prostrate before you and bid farewell to all of you for the last time. I have achieved the fortune of your pure association, in this way, I have achieved that supreme knowledge, and I have abandoned all the desires and bondage, and taking shelter in the supreme Bhramam.

Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham – Shivarcchanam

Chapter – 9 – Shivarcchanam

Oh! Thatha, no Jeeva is free from the material interest and bondage from the day the creation has begun, there is no one in the three worlds free from the female elephant like the worldly interest of lust, desire, pride, jealously, anger, ego, etc.  The human mind like the male elephant is powerless before that female elephant of worldly interest; therefore no one has found the poll to fasten that female elephant. The Jeeva is well known for its uncontrollable interest in worldly matters like richness, fame, prosperity, wealth, and excessive attachments to families, children, companions, relatives, and friends. There is no one in the three worlds who has achieved perfect control over worldly desires and bondage.

Oh! Jeeva, the ascetics who have obtained perpetual grace of the Supreme Lord, move fearlessly across the lands, they accept alms which was offered by pure and pious people, they associate with the saintly men and Sages, ponder over the Paramarththa Thaththva, Veda, Vedanta and scriptures, they conduct austerities and Tapas, Alas! They have no interest in worldly affairs or have no attachment with any of the living and non-living things, they blissfully roam in Paramanandha/supreme bliss. Oh! Jeeva, life on Earth is deplorable, one day all those dreams and expectations would shatter, the attractiveness of the body would ruin, virtues would get tarnished in the constant association with the wicked people, eventually, the moment will arise to bump into Yama, and at that moment you would be pushed to the state of intense trepidations. Oh! Jeeva, listen to me carefully; there is no safest heaven available other than the lotus feet of Madhananthaka, the supreme Lord Shiva who is the destroyer of Kamadeva. Oh! Jeeva, your wealth, beauty, and virtues would not help you during your troubled time, other than the meditation and contemplation upon the supreme Lord Parameshwara, hence strive hard to achieve Moksha.

The noble souls take pleasure in the meditation and contemplation upon the supreme Lord Maheshwara who is the commander of the Universe, or the supreme Lord Janardhana who resides as soul in Jeeva, these virtuous people have no sense of discrimination, even though they are passionately devoted to that supreme Lord Shiva who is adorned in the crescent moon on the matted hair locks. Oh! Jeeva, when are you going to lead that noble life, contemplating upon that supreme Lord Shiva, sitting on the white sand bed of the sacred river Ganga in the silence of full moon night, and constantly utter his sacred names with overflowing tears on the eyes? Oh! Jeeva, when are you going to lead a pious life, offering all that have owned as charities, with extreme kindness and compassion, remembering the miseries and sorrows of the worldly existence? When are you going to settle in the hermitage and take pleasure in the full moon night and contemplate upon the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord Shiva? Oh! Jeeva, The noble souls who have achieved an abundance of piousness, and have the eternal grace of that supreme Lord Shambhu would attain the fortune to stand before the sacred river Ganga, wearing loincloths and cry out “Oh! Shambho, Oh! Thripurari, kindly shower your compassionate grace upon us,” and spend days like moments.

Oh! Kamari, who burned the Lord of Kama into ashes, Oh! Prabho, when did I get freed from the grief depending on the Kings? Oh! Prabho, When did I get the opportunity to live a pious life taking a dip on the sacred river Ganga, and conduct veneration of you with the fresh alluring flowers of rich fragrances and fruits collected from the woods, and engage in meditation upon your lotus feet, seated on the bed of rocks or in the caves, living on fruits and fiber roots as meals, spending hours and hours in the association of saints and ascetics, and take pleasure in the Athmabodha with your grace?

Oh! Shambho, Oh! Prabho, when did I achieve the serenity of mind, living in solitude without any interest in worldly matters and bondage, living on alms, fearlessly roaming attired in directions as clothe, and engage in wash off my sins? The  Yogeeshwaras who live on alms, pure-hearted, take pleasure in Bhiksha, live anywhere in the world without any reservations, they abandon the wealth, fame, richness, possessions, wife, children, family, friends and relatives as a ‘Thrina’/Grass, while living on Earth they achieve Paramanandha Avabodha, with the grace of the supreme Lord attains Moksha effortlessly. Oh! Jeeva, the Moksha Sadhana is possible only for Yogeeshwara with the grace of the supreme Lord.

Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham - Nithya Anithya Vasthu Vichara:

Chapter – 8 –Nithya Anithya Vasthu Vichara:

Oh! Rajan, Do you think the practice of learning Veda, Vedanta, Shastra, and Purana, and achieving vast knowledge in the scriptures and Vedas, performing all those Yaga, Yoga, Tapa, Karma with the desire to attain heavenly pleasures would do any good to Jeeva? Oh! Rajan, these have become commercial activities, unless and until the Jeeva strive for the destruction of Pralayagni like the miseries and sorrows of the  worldly existence without the knowledge of the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam which is supreme bliss resides as a soul in living beings and knowledge of oneness-in-all, all the above activities would not provide fruitfulness in their lives. Therefore Oh! Jeeva, leave all those practices yearning for material welfare that will bring no good to you, hence strive to achieve that supreme Bhramam with the constant meditation and contemplation.

Oh! Jeeva, at the end of the Yuga, the mount Mahameru which is well-known for its rich mineral and gems deposit break into pieces in the Pralayagni, all those oceans which are the storehouse of various pearls, giant aquatic animals like sharks, sea snakes, seal, alligator, dolphin, beautiful fishes of various species meet its death when the water dries up completely, the Earth which is the treasure house of richness and mountains meet massive destruction, do I need to explain the delicate Jeeva which has the strength of the edge of the elephant’s ears? Oh! Jeeva, you cannot withstand in that Mahapralaya, therefore contemplate upon that supreme Bhramam which is the cause for the deluge.

Oh! Jeeva, life on Earth is miserable, after some years the body starts to meet its ruin and it would become too thin and difficult to walk alone, the pair of teeth would disappear, eyes would lose its sight and the ears would lose the hearing capacity, the mouth would drench in dribble, the speeches would not be clear and audible, no one will have the interest or patience to listen or respond or follow them, your wife, children and relatives won’t have the patience to listen to you, eventually, they will become your enemies. How pathetic human life on Earth!

Oh! Jeeva, after a few years your hair would become gray, bones start to pop up and uneven which makes the ugly look, the old age is a curse; the beautiful women abandon old men like the well of Chandala. Oh! Jeeva, strive hard to achieve the ‘Shreyas’, /the knowledge of the supreme soul, which is all-pervasive, absolute Bhramam is the eternal truth and supreme bliss,/ while your body is free from illnesses, before reaching the old age, before the sense organs get damaged, before the life span ends. Otherwise, all your efforts would be like digging well when the house is on the fire. Oh! Jeeva, reading scriptures and sacred texts to understand the nature of the all-pervasive supreme Bhramam during old age is exactly like digging well when the house is on the fire.

Oh! Jeeva, the life span of humans are too short, hence be in the association of ascetics and saintly person, serve them relentlessly, and acquire the knowledge of the Paramamthma Thaththva, live on the river banks of Ganga, or serve your chaste wife with respect and kindness, while living in the Grahasthashrama, or conduct studies on scriptures and sacred texts, or read great poems which carries nectar-like messages. Oh! Jeeva,  a short span of life is not enough to do all those above mentioned.

The Kings who have an unsteady mind cannot get pleased easily. We are ordinary humans with great expectations and desires with a short span of life, our body is tender and delicate, attacked by Jara/aging and illnesses and life is snatched by Mrithyu as well. Oh! Sakha, the intellectuals strive hard to achieve the Paramarththa to make their life fruitful, the Jeeva with the unsteady mind undergoes sufferings and miseries and hurl into the vicious cycles of repeated births. The intellectuals take pleasure in the constant meditation and contemplation upon the supreme Bhramam, living in the caves or hermitage closer to the sacred river Ganga. The intellectuals do not waste their lives until the last minute; they do not wait to take the disgrace of the people in the families and children, they do not wait to meet ruin of wealth before their eyes, they do not wait to see the people approached for help return with disappointment, they do not wait to see abandoned by friends, relatives, and servants, and they do not wait to watch their youthfulness leaving all of a sudden.

Oh! Jeeva, the moon rays are beautiful, the lush green land, the happiness derived in the association of ascetics, intellectuals and saintly people are extremely pleasurable, good poetries, the reddened face of the lover soaked in tears due to the silly jokes, everything is beautiful to watch, Alas! If you have the knowledge of the impermanent nature of all those things, you won’t even take pleasure in it. Once, the Jeeva attained the Bhramanandham, the rest of the things in the Universe seems futile and least interesting. Oh! Jeeva, wake up, living in the sophisticated homes and fortress, listening to the melodious music and instrumental music, association with the beloved lover and wife are highly enjoyable. Alas! All those happiness and pleasure are momentary like the fireflies gets attracted to the flame, with the force of the wind it sacrifices life in the flame. Oh! Jeeva, wake up, all those intellectuals, scholars, and saintly people are already left to the forest leaving all those momentary happiness and in search of Bhramanandham/permanent bliss.

Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham– Mana: Sambodhana Niyamanam

Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham

Chapter – 7 – Mana: Sambodhana Niyamanam

Oh! Intellect, why are you taking so much trouble to please others on a regular basis and depend on them? If you keep your intellect serene with the constant meditation and contemplation upon the supreme Bhramam symbolizes eternal bliss, you will experience the presence of the precious gem Chinthamani like the serenity of mind that could provide an abundance of auspiciousness and fulfill all your desires as well. Oh! Jeeva, strive hard to keep your mind and intellect serene. Oh! Intellect, why are you wandering all over in futile? Therefore keep yourself calm, whatever destined to happen would definitely happen, and how it should happen has been pre-destined, there is no doubt in it. I am not bothered of past and future, I am not anxious about the present as well, I take pleasure in whatever comforts arrives unexpectedly on my way.

Oh! Intellect, at the earliest detach your mind from the Bhogavishya/worldly matters and bondage which causes dense forest like intense grief and sorrows, and adopt the path of Shreyas/righteousness, which could bring serenity and peace of mind, Shreyas could bring happiness and contentment during the life on the Earth and afterlife as well. Oh! Intellect, get yourself out of the persistent waves of worldly matters and bondage, and unite your mind and intellect in that supreme Bhramam which is supreme bliss, and understand that eternal bliss is your real nature. If so, you will not get attached to the impermanent nature of worldly matters, bondages, fame, wealth, richness, etc. and keep yourself calm and serene always.

Oh! Intellect leaves the interest in worldly matters and bondage, cultivate intense devotion and faith upon the supreme Lord Chandrachooda, and yearn to live on the shores of sacred Ganga. Why are you too interested in the families, children, wife, wealth, richness, fame, money, friends, and relatives that have short-living nature, like waves in the ocean, water bubbles, lightning, the tip of the flame, venomous serpents? How could you trust them? These are untrustworthy and troublesome as well.

Oh! Intellect, do you trust on the wealth which has impermanent nature which does not cling with the individual for a long period of time, same as the prostitutes’ dances to the movements of eyebrows of the King? Oh! Intellect never trusts the impermanent nature of wealth, richness, fame, families, etc. and get battered with the miseries and sorrows. The ascetics attired in rugged clothes, wander on the royal streets of Kashi, and beg for alms and whatever receives as alms consume as a meal of the day. Oh! Intellect, it is appropriate to take pleasure in the kingly status, in the grand assembly of Vandhiganas who sung in praise of your glories for money, the celestial Apsaras like woman fanning on both the sides, with the jingling sounds of the bangles adorned in their hands, attired in exquisite ornaments and finest clothes, otherwise, it is appropriate to practice the renunciation and contemplation upon the supreme Bhramam. If all the luxuries are available before you, take pleasure in it, but it is impossible to achieve in this material world, therefore adopt the path of Shreyas, and contemplate upon that supreme Bhramam.

Oh! Intellect, listen to me carefully, without the Shreyas, it is meaningless to have an abundance of wealth to fulfill all the desires, or overpowered all the enemies or achieved several companions with the wealth, or achieved finest and healthy body to live till the end of Kalpantha/at the end of Kalpa. Hence, whatever you achieve without Shreyas is an utter disaster. I shall describe the appropriate way to attain Shreays, 1) The intense devotion and faith upon the supreme Lord Shiva, 2) The knowledge about the rebirth and the causes of it 3) The practice of meditation and contemplation to remove the impurities such as lust, greed, desire, ego, pride 4) The practice of renunciation from worldly matters and bondage 5) Choose the serene wood to practice meditation and contemplation, perform austerities, vows, etc. Oh! Intellect, Is there anything superior to Shreyas in this Universe?

Oh! Jeeva, fix your intellect on the supreme Bramham, which has no beginning or end, it is the ultimate truth and supreme bliss, it is free from Janma, Bhaya, Jara, and Mrithyu, it is all-pervasive and eternal. Oh! Intellect, why are you taking pleasure in the impermanent nature of Prakrithi and put yourself in constant miseries and sorrows? There is nothing to compare with the supreme Bhramapadham, the Jeeva who are dull-minded soaked in worldly matters would take pleasure in the status, wealth, fame, richness, etc. Oh! Intellect, you are restlessly wandering all over the Patal Loka and the sky, and roaming in different directions yearning to fulfill your endless desires, which is impractical. During this frantic journey, have you ever realized the supreme soul in you? Have you ever thought of that supreme Bramham which is eternal bliss? Have you ever learned of that supreme soul who is Paramatha in you? Have you ever meditated upon that supreme soul/Jeeva in you?  Hence, I strongly recommend you; contemplate upon that supreme Lord who resides as a soul in you, to achieve contentment in life.

Chapter – 6 – Yathi Nripathi Samvatham

Oh! Rajan, you are highly respectable by your subjects, we are saintly and ascetics who learned the supreme knowledge from our preceptors, therefore we are also well-known and respectable in the society of intellectuals and learned. Your fame is well-spoken among the Kings and rulers of neighboring countries.  Intellectuals spread our fame in all directions of the Kingdom. We both have a huge difference in admiration, respect, wealth, fame, etc. Oh! King, if you remain unnoticed at the Yathi/intellectuals and preceptors, we remain untouched by it, therefore the ‘Yathi’ are prominent and superior to the King.

Oh! Rajan, you are the Lord of your wealth, we are learned of Astra, Shastra, scriptures, and Veda, supreme knowledge of Paramarththa, therefore we are also considered as Esha. You are extremely valorous with a huge army of warriors to fight against the neighboring countries and expand your Kingdom. We are extremely talented in crushing the pride of unintelligent, and the learned swollen with pride. You are served by the people of your Kingdom to earn wealth for their life. We are served by the people who wanted to remove their impurities like ego, pride, lust, desires, greed, etc. and to achieve serenity of mind; they yearn for our association to listen and recite to the glorious scriptures, Veda, Vedantha, and serve us as a disciple. Oh! Rajan, if you have no interest in the saintly or ascetics and serving them, they have nothing to lose or gain, they are blissful as ever.

Oh! Rajan, you get satisfied with the magnificent clothes, ornaments, etc. we get satisfied with the bark of leaves, the satisfaction derived for both of us is the same. The mind and intellect never differentiate the amount of satisfaction that has arrived. The Jeeva who is greedy of wealth becomes poorer if the mind and intellect are not contented, is there any difference between the poorer and the wealthiest? Therefore, Oh! Rajan, understand the mind and intellect is the prime factor of contentment and happiness. Hence, keep your mind and intellect serene without impurities, and content.

Oh! Rajan, listen to me, the fiber roots and fruits from the forest are more than enough to wave off hunger, the nectar-like crystal clear water from the ponds, watercourses, rivers are enough to quench the thirst, the Earth is the comfortable place to sleep, and the bark of leaves are comfy attire for the ascetics. A Yathi need not depend on the wealthiest swollen with pride in the sudden arrival of wealth and drenched in worldly matters and bondage of intoxicating drink. A Yathi need not depend on the Dhurjjana and Dhurahankari or tolerate their atrocities. Oh! Rajan, we get satisfied with the meal received as alms, we take pleasure in directions as clothes, we spend our day and night on the ground, and therefore we have nothing to do with the wealthiest people who are swollen with pride. The Viraktha and Yathi have nothing to do with the King and the wealthiest.

Oh! Rajan, we have no need to meet the King and praise him or act before him. We are not Vandhigana who sing in praises of the King, we are not his advisories. We are not those women who have a slight bend due to the heaviness of the bosom. This Universe was ruled by several well-known rulers, some of the Emperors were highly learned and benevolent, some of them ruled the Kingdom wisely, some of them abandoned the Kingdom like grass and embraced the path of Paramarththa. Alas! Now the valorous are ruling the Universe and taking great pleasure in it, without the knowledge of its impermanent nature. The unwise take great pride in the sudden wealth, becomes too haughty and arrogant, should remember that this world was ruled by Rajarishis, and abandoned those stately comforts like ‘Trina’ and embraced Paramarththa. Therefore these ignorant rulers should get themselves ashamed of their atrocities.

Oh! Rajan, This Earth was ruled by several thousands of Kings, and it was always been in the custody of the great rulers, so there is nothing to take pride in it. In fact, the rulers who get the opportunity to rule such a Kingdom should be obedient and feel anxious, not to be happy with the status. The Earth is a mass of mud surrounded by water, which has no permanency, the Kings and rulers fight for this impermanent Earth, and take pride in it and celebrate their victory on it. These rulers are Kshudhra and Dharidhras, have no knowledge of Paramarththa, engage in performing very little charities, and whoever receives charities from these Adhamas are considered worthless.

Oh! Rajan, Madhananthaka the supreme Lord Shiva who is adorned in the garlands of skulls, and these skulls of those pious and noble souls are fortunate ones in their life, there were several thousand of warriors with intense faith and devotion, knowledge in Paramarththa has lived on this Earth, Alas! Now the rulers are swollen with pride, concentrate their own wellbeing, make all efforts to protect their Prana, take false pride when others praise and prostrate before them.

Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham - Kala Mahimanu Varnnanam

Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham

Chapter – 7 – Kala Mahimanu Varnnanam

I shall reverentially prostrate before the powerful ‘Kala’/time, which causes massive destruction to the magnificent fortresses of the Kings, illustrious Kings and their clans, huge army, all the attendants and servants, lovely women in the fortress, the unruly princes,  and Vandhiganas/sthuthipadak.  Thus, the history of the Kingdom and the King, and all the material and immaterial things undergo constant transformation and ruin, that has momentary nature, finally undergoes the massive destruction with the influence of ‘Time’, I shall repeatedly prostrate before that powerful ‘Time’.

The ‘Time’ works like the poker chip in the board game.  The game begins with an equal number of people to move the pawns from both sides, at a point of time, the number of players gets reduced, at the end of the game no one remains.  In this way, the ‘Time’ acts as a brilliant player in the Universe as a board game, and the day and nights are the poker chip to move the pawns like Jeeva, ultimately it wipes off the Jeeva from the Boardgame of the Universe.

The movement of Sun causes to reduce the life span of the Jeeva, in the sense the day and night cause immense changes in the lifespan of creatures on the Earth. The Jeeva does not realize the passing of time because of the burden of work for livelihood. Therefore the Jeeva is least bothered by Janma, Jara, afflictions, and Mrithyu. The Jeevas as drenched and boozed in the carelessness like the intoxicating drink, therefore they do not get scared of the repeated births, miseries, and sorrows of worldly existence, aging and illnesses, and ultimately the death. The Jeeva considers the day and night are natural processes, and does not understand the influences of it in their lives, they immerse in the Prarabdha Karma and constantly chases after material comforts. The Jeeva plunges into meaningless activities and makes life on the Earth unfruitful. Alas! The Jeeva is not ashamed of its endless desires.

It is pathetic to note that the Jeeva who has immense potential to get rid of the worldly matters and bondages, and thereby avoid hurling into the wheel of repeated births, are not taking the effort for achieving salvation, or contemplate upon that supreme Eshwara to achieve Mukthi. The miserable Jeeva who is highly potent to open the entrance to the doors of the heavenly abode, doest engage in the pious deeds. The Jeeva dream of the physical pleasures involved in the flesh of the bosom and beautiful thighs of an attractive woman is merely a dagger to cut off the forest like youthfulness of their mother. Alas! After achieving the life of a human, if it is not utilized or did not strive for Mokshaprapthi or heaven would be considered as a waste of life on Earth.

The Jeeva does not strive for achieving scholastic skills to enter the debate with the intellectuals, or achieve the knowledge of usage of armaments in the battlefield to pierce the forehead of the elephant in the battle, or does not take pleasure in the nectar-like saliva of the beautiful woman during the moonlight, in this way Jeeva spends its youthful days as the earthen lamp kept in the empty home. It is sad, the years have passed, finally, elderly days has arrived, never been into the path of Mokshaprapthi or does not achieve any material comfort or sensual pleasures in life.

The Jeeva does not attain a respectable skill or wealth, or not engaged in the sincere and honest service to parents, or never been in the embrace of a beautiful wife who has attractive eyes resemble fishes in the pond, not even in the dream, I have been depending on the meal of others like a crow and spend several days of life. The people who have born with us and companions are met their death long ago, even though they are still living in our memories. We have attained latter years of age, like the trees on the river bank which may get uprooted any moment. The eternal truth is that the ‘Time’ has a constant influence on the living and non- living things eventually push them into the mouth of death.

The life span of humans on the Earth was limited to a hundred years. Alas! Half of the years spent in the night, half in the rest of the years spent as a child, youth, and old. The rest of the twenty-five years was spend fighting with the illnesses, drenched in the pain of separation, and in the service of others and depending on others. How did the Jeeva takes pleasure in the fleeting nature of life, which resembles waves in the ocean? Therefore the life of humans on the Earth is not the package of happiness. The Jeeva spends its life as a child for some time, then attained the age of adult engages in the various amorous sports, lives penniless for some time, lives in the richness of wealth for some time, later undergoes aging and illnesses, immerses in the decoration of the shrunken body, undergoes all the Prarabdhakarma, ultimately disappears under the curtain of the abode of Yama.

Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham - Bhoga Sthairya Varnnanam

Vairagya Shathakam – Sri Bharthrihari Virachitham

Chapter – 6 – Bhoga Sthairya Varnnanam

The Jeeva undergoes fear of Bhoga due to the dread of illnesses,  people from the illustrious clan fear of disgrace of the clan, the wealthiest fear of the loss of wealth due to the interference of the King, Jeeva undergoes fear of loss of pride due to the threat of humiliation, Jeeva who has prowess and courage constantly fears of enemies, Jeeva who takes pride in their beauty and charm fear of aging and illnesses, the intellectuals and learned fear of debate with the dread disgrace in the society, the virtuous dread of immoral people, Jeeva constantly have the fear of death, ultimately the Jeeva is constantly under the fear and anxieties. Alas! There is one thing ‘fearless’ in the Prapancha is ‘Vairagya’ which is the state of being impassionate and desireless,  free from the interest in worldly matters and bondage.  Oh! Jeeva, whoever follows the practice of ‘Vairagya’ need not fear of any of the above.

Oh! Jeeva, birth is always followed by death; the youthfulness is constantly chased by the Jara/aging. Alas! The Jeeva finds contentment in wealth; appease the sense with the presence of lovely young women and amorous sports with them. The deceitful people destroy the virtuous, the venomous serpent ruins the attractiveness of nature, the wicked people destroy the regime of a wise ruler, the absence of tranquility and perseverance destroys the auspiciousness. Therefore nothing is permanent in this Universe, all the goodness has to face ruin with the evilness.

Oh! Jeeva, the health is ruined by the physical and mental afflictions, the wealth brings endless troubles, like the doors kept open for the thief, person born with poor health is constantly chases by the death, therefore the creator has created nothing in the universe which has permanent nature, all that created in the Universe and its living beings undergo constant transformation and ruin. Oh! Learned ones, Oh! Intellectuals, Bhoga is the lotus flower with several petals which has short life, Prana is impermanent which leaves the body any moment, the physical attraction to a youthful woman is short-lived, Oh! Jeeva, all those Sukha and Bhoga in this Universe are impermanent and short-living, therefore take effort to achieve the sense of ‘Vairagya’ and attain the fruitfulness of your life.

Oh! Jeeva, the happiness achieved out of Bhoga is like lightning in the cluster of rain clouds, which has fleeting nature. The life span of Jeeva is Kshanabangura, like the water droplets on the leaves of the lotus flower, which is momentary. The interests in worldly matters Sukha, Bhoga during youthful days are short living. Oh! Intellectuals contemplate upon the supreme Bhramam, fix your mind and intellect on the supreme bliss, with the firm devotion and faith.  Oh! Jeeva, the Prana is flimsy like the waves, and what about the youthfulness and wealth? What about wealth and grains? These have fleeting nature too and all those resemble a dream. The experiences of happiness out of luxuries are like lightning during the heavy downpour that has short-living nature. The happiness and satisfaction received out of the embrace of the women is short living. Oh! Jeeva, if you want to cross the unfathomable ocean of worldly existence, contemplate upon that Paramambhrama with intense faith and devotion.

Oh! Jeeva, the fetuses spend its initial period of life in the secrets, and shrinking its body inside the mother’s womb undergoes various struggles, therefore the Garbhavasa is extremely painful. The youth spends its life in the separation from the pleasurable company of consort, the elderly years of life to meet the humiliation and disgrace of beautiful young women. Oh! Jeeva, the life on Earth is extremely miserable, therefore which is the most gratifying in this Samsara? Oh! Jeeva, Jara is like a female lion which creates trepidations, the illnesses are enemies which takes a toll on the body, the life span of the Jeeva is like the water-filled in the broken pot /nine gates in the human body/ after all these, the Jeeva immerses in various disgraceful deeds. The human life is miserable and indefinite, Alas! Still, the Jeeva keep engaging in various demonic activities.

Oh! Jeeva, this Samsara is filled with numerous Bhogavasthu/pleasures, which have impermanent nature /wealth, happiness, families, children, fame, relatives, companions, richness, etc. Oh! Jeeva, why are you wandering all over in search of it? Therefore put a halt for the chase of comforts and luxuries, if you believe in my words, retrieve your mind from the endless desires and lust, worldly matters and bondage, and contemplate upon the supreme Bhramam who resides as a soul in us.  Oh! Jeeva, the Bhramanandam is the Sarvashreshta/superior one, and supreme bliss, whoever contemplates and meditate upon that supreme Bramham, would abandon the regime of three worlds, and all those heavenly pleasures like grass and take shelter at the supreme Bhramam. Oh!  Jeeva, therefore, abandons all those worldly matters and bondage which has Kshanabhangura/fleeting nature.
