Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter -  5 - 3

Chapter – 3 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 41 – 60

Vidura speaks “Oh! Rajan, listen to me carefully, Dharththarashtra/Kauravas are dense forest, and the Pandavas are the bear in the dense wood. Hence, do not make an effort to destroy the entire wood along with the bear, or do not try to sweep away the bear from the dense wood, it is an impossible task. The bears/wild animals are essential for the existence of the forest, vice versa and they protect each other. Oh! The wicked and sinful people always lookout for the bad in others; will not take interest in knowing the good in them. Oh! Rajan, the people who sincerely wish success in all endeavors should strictly follow the Dharma. It is impossible to separate the nectar from heaven; in the same manner, it is difficult to separate the auspiciousness and success in the endeavors without following the Dharma. Oh! Rajan, whose mind and intellect is wedged in the welfare of all and free from sins, he/she understands the nature of Prakrithi/destructible and Athman/indestructible. Oh! Rajan, the person who sincerely follows Dharma, Arththa, and Kama while living on the Earth would attain the fruitfulness of the same even afterlife on Earth/Paraloka. Oh! Rajan, the person who has perfect control over the waves of anger and Harsha/happiness which is uncontrollable, and do not chase after material comforts would attain auspiciousness in life. Oh! Bharatharshabha, there are five types of strength in humans 1) Bahubalam/strength of arms which is considered as inferior. 2) The association with the wise ministers 3) wealth 4) Abhijathabalam/the quality of fearlessness innate in the person 5) the ‘intelligence’ which is capable to bring all the auspiciousness, therefore it is considered as superior among all the strength. Oh! Rajan, after having enmity with the Pandavas who is the essence of courage and prowess, does not feel that they are away from the Kingdom of Hastinapura, hence your sons are safe. Oh! Rajan, the noble and wise understands the nature of Sthree/fleeting, Kings/unpredictable nature, serpents/venomous, the knowledge gained from preceptor/permanent wealth, living with the enemies/danger, Bhoga/fleeting, and the life span is unpredictable. Therefore the intelligent people will not take pride in it or do not believe in it. Oh! Rajan, there is no cure or the physician for the wound created by the ‘ intelligence’ of a person, even the sacred chants, sacrificial chants, pious deeds, the Kriya from Adharvaveda or Manthra, and all those herbal medicines are inefficient to remove the toxic poison cause by the intelligence. Oh! Rajan, do not ignore these four 1) serpents 2) Agni 3) lion and 4) Kuleena/born in the illustrious clan, they are highly powerful. Agni is all-powerful, has supreme brilliance, it is hidden in the woods, even though it does not take initiative to burn the wood until and unless it was ignited. Oh! Rajan, the friction of two wooden pieces is capable to burn down the entire forest, in the same way, the people who have born in the illustrious clan are capable to burn down the atrocities, they do not reveal even the slightest of the fire in them unless and until the time comes. Oh! Rajan, you and your sons are the creepers on the Pandavas like Salavruksha, these creepers cannot live without these Salavrukshas. Oh! Rajan, you and your sons are like the dense forest and the Pandavas are the lion in it. If the wood is free from the lions, it would meet destruction and the same thing would happen to the lions too.”

Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter -  5 -2

Chapter – 2 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 21 – 40

Vidura speaks “Oh! Rajan, an ideal master will not block the payment to his servant or stop giving free allowances, in order to increase his wealth, remember that even the sincere servants and ministers would turn against those Master who refuses to make their payments and abandon him at the time of crisis. Oh! Rajan, a King should have clear cut knowledge of the expenditure of the Kingdom, and the payments of the servants should be decided according to the size of the income and should seek help from others at the time of crisis. Oh! Rajan, a King should consider his sincere servant as the second Athman, an ideal servant is the one who sincerely follows the command of the king, decent, always work for the welfare of the King, well aware of his own capacity and the strength of the people with whom he interacts. Oh! Rajan, the servant who does not follow the command of the King, do not perform the task assigned, proud and haughty, and impolite, talks unfavorable to the King should abandon immediately. Oh! Rajan, I shall describe the qualities of an ideal servant 1) humble 2) skillful 3) do not procrastinate 4) kind 5) person with clean habits 6) person who does not fall for influences 7) A person who was born in a decent family and free from illnesses 8) Person who speak pleasantly. Oh! Rajan, do not visit the acquaintance homes during the dark hours of the night, even though it is with the prior notice, and do not trust people easily by making visits during night hours. It is dangerous to wander in the streets during the night hours. It is unsafe to fall in love with a woman from the royal family, or the lover of the King. Oh! Rajan, it is unsafe to openly criticize or reject the opinion of the wicked King who is the association with deceitful people, therefore it is safe to move away without making any public comment. Oh! Rajan, do not keep business association with these kinds of people 1) The King who is too kind 2) prostitute 3) King’s men 4) son 5) brother 6) widow who has a male child 7) warrior 8) Person who has met a huge loss. Oh! Rajan, the person who take bath on a regular basis would achieve the following 1) Strength 2) Charm 3) good voice 4) clarity in words and its pronunciation 5) soft-touch 6) aroma 7) purity 8) auspiciousness 9) attractive limbs 10) achieves beautiful female as a companion. Oh! Rajan, the person who takes appropriate and required quantity of meals achieves 1) good health 2) long life 3) happiness 4) strength 5) will have children born without illnesses 6) does not face open criticism from others. Oh! Rajan, these kinds of people should not allow in the homes 1) person who eats excessively 2) person who does not follow the norms of dressing 3) person who is hated by all 4) a treacherous person 5) person who does not perform any rites according to time or zone. Oh! Rajan, the following types of people are unreliable and should not be approached for any kind of help 1) miser 2) person who complaints about others 3) person who has no knowledge in scriptures 4) deceitful person 5) the person who does not respect the Mahathma 6) wicked 7) cruel 8) person who always engages in conflicts 9) and ungrateful people. Oh! Rajan, Adhama/people who do not perform Dharmic rites and have no knowledge in scriptures are needed to be abandoned, they are 1) people who performs Karma without the knowledge in it or performs Karma which is not recommended by Shashtra 2) wrong-doer 3) non-believer in God 4) person who does not love others 5) the person who is self-proclaimed as learned and assume well knowledgeable, these kinds of people should be abandoned. Oh! Rajan, achievement in tasks depends on the kind of help you receive; therefore wealth and help are interconnected. Oh! Rajan, an ideal parent is the one who retires to Tapasya after performing the two major responsibilities 1) bring up male child and make him capable to stand on his own leg, and let him live an independent life. 2) If it was a girl, giving away the daughter to a suitable groom in the right age. Oh! Rajan, a King should perform all the tasks promising to his subjects and for his own welfare as well.  These two Karmas are considered as the way to achieve Dharma and Arththa.  Oh! Rajan, people who have intellect, power, courage, prowess, enthusiasm, and hard-working natured need not be worried about the source of income. Oh! Rajan, your enmity with the sons of Pandu causes grief to deities and Indra, you are unnecessarily troubled with the hostility against Pandavas who are like your children, and have great respect and love for you. In this way, you are mounting the troubles and grief of your life, your children would achieve ill-fame, and you are giving an opportunity to your enemies to celebrate at your fall. Oh! Rajan, Bhishma, Drona, Yudhishtira, and your waves of anger are like the fury of Indra, it would destroy the entire Universe, like the meteoroids fallen from the sky. Oh! Rajan, listen to me carefully, let your hundred sons and Karna along with the Pandava rule the Kingdom of Hastinapura.”

Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath – Chapter -  5 - 1

Chapter – 1 - The conversation between Vidura and King Dhritarashtra – 5 -1

Vidura speaks “Oh! Vaichithra Veerya, listen to me carefully, Swayambhuva Manu described the seventeen categories of the people who are least trustworthy, and it is a futile effort to correct these kinds of people, if so it would be running after the air to fasten it. These seventeen categories of people chase towards hell. 1) The person who prepares to smack the sky with his fist, 2) people who make an effort to bend the rainbow,  3)people who tries to get hold of the sun rays. 4) Preceptor who gets angry on the person who is not his disciple 5) Person who tries to calm down the other who is in extreme fury 6) person who takes control over the weakness of the women 7) the person who beg to the one who is a miser by birth 8) person who self-praise 9) the person who engages in immoral activities after having birth in the illustrious clan 10) the person who desire for something which does not worth to him/her 11) Shvashura/father-in-law who jokes with the daughter-in-law 12) Shvashura who lives in the association with the daughter-in-law and protect his dignity 13) the person who spread rumors 14) person who complains about his wife publicly 15) the person who forgets the favor of others 16) Person who claims permanent possession of the things which was borrowed 17) person who tries to calm down a born-wicked. Oh! Rajan, it is fair to treat the person who treats and behave to you, in the sense, people who mistreat you should be treated in the same manner, and the person who is truthful should be treated exactly in the same way.”

Dhritarashtra speaks “Oh! Vidura, it was predicted that the human life span is a hundred years in the scriptures, although why did the human does not achieve the same? What is the reason for the shortage of life span? Explain to me.”

Vidura speaks “Oh! Rajan, it was not the death takes away the Prana, I shall describe them clearly 1) The excessive haughtiness 2) unnecessary talks 3) lack of sacrificing nature 4) Krodham/anger 5) curiosity 6) Mithradhroham.  Oh! Rajan, these are like a sharp sword that would cut off the life span of a human. Oh! Rajan, I wish all the success to you. Oh! Rajan, I shall describe the Bhramahathya sins which require performing atonement to get rid of the sin, hence Veda strongly recommends Prayashchiththa for all these sins. 1) person who approaches the wife of  his companion 2) person who approaches the wife of the preceptor 2) person who slaughters the cows 3) person who kills or disgrace the Bhramin 4) Twice-born who accepts Shudra woman as wife 5) Person who is disrespectful towards preceptor and illustrious scholars 6) Bhramin who consume intoxicating drinks 4) Person who creates an obstacle to the livelihood of others 5) Person who appoints twice-born as servant 6) The person who has taken away the life of the one who is surrendered to him. Oh! Rajan, I shall describe the nature of noble souls who achieve heavenly abode 1) Grihastha 2) Dhanasheela 3) people who keep up promises 4) people who sincerely follow the worship Deva and Pithrus, and consume meals after offerings made to the deities and Pithrus. 5) person who strongly believes in non-violence and strictly follows them 6) person who does not create havoc in a society 7) person who does not engages in arguments and conflicts 8) grateful people 9) Truthful 10) pleasing natured and 11) wise.  Oh! Rajan, it is difficult to find people who talk pleasantly and truthful, in the same manner, it is rare to find people who are promising and always think about the welfare of others. Oh! Rajan, listen to me carefully, it is not a Sthuthipadaka who always engages in the praise of you, it is the minister who always speaks of Dharma and most promising things for the King and the Kingdom, without considering the likes and dislikes of the King would increase the strength of the King and multiplies the welfare of the Kingdom. Oh! Rajan, it is advisable to discard the person who is harmful and disgraceful to the clan, it is advisable to discard a clan who engages in immoral deeds for the welfare of the village, it is advisable to abandon the Earth for the welfare of the soul. Oh! Rajan, the wise would store wealth and grains for the difficult times, it is important to protect wife with great care, more than the wealth, Oh! Rajan, a person should protect his self/ Athman/knowledge of self, more than wealth and wife. Oh! Vaichithraveerya, I have already instructed you about the evil consequences of the gambling between the Kaurava and Pandava, but you did not take my word like a patient does not follow the medication. Oh! Narendra, Pandavas are the essence of Dharma, like the peacocks with beautiful and colorful feathers, you wanted them to overpower by your sons like the crow. You are leaving the lions, letting them remain unprotected and caring the Jackals, when the time comes you would cry over it. Oh! Thatha, a good master won’t behave harshly to his truthful servant who serves sincerely, and vests complete trust upon them, therefore both of them won’t leave each other during the troubled times.”
