Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The attachment to worldly matters causes rebirth in order to nullify the Karma/deeds

Chapter – 165-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The attachment to worldly matters causes rebirth

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, kindly do not count on my virtues and sins, uphold your honor, I have taken shelter at your lotus feet, Oh! Sri Hari, kindly remove my fear of death. Oh! Prabho, I haven’t practiced Yoga, Yajja, Japa, Thapa, Dhanam, Sathyam, Dhaya, Ahimsa, Arjjavam, Dhyanam, Shama, Dhama, Astheyam, Arjjavam, etc. or I haven’t learned a single syllabus of the sacred Veda. Oh! Prabho, I was wandering like a stray dog chasing after the material and physical pleasures, I didn’t keep my intellect pure for a second from the toxic poison of worldly matters. Oh! Prabho, I have taken birth in several wombs due to my Karma/deeds, all that I have earned while moving from one womb to another was Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, I was constantly chasing after the deadly poison of worldly matters such as possession, wealth, money, richness, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. that has momentary life. Oh! Prabho, if Lord Bhrama makes an effort to write down my sins by using the Kalpavruksha as a pen, the ocean as ink, and Earth as paper, it won’t be enough. Oh! Dhayamaya/compassionate Lord, no deity is kind and compassionate as you. Oh! Prabho, I am wretched, heartless, wicked, impure, dull, ignorant, inauspicious, hence no one wants to look at me, I have no one other than you. Oh! Prabho, you are omnipresent, all-pervasive supreme Bhramam, endless, eternal, pure, unblemished, flawless. Oh! Prabho, you are Abinashi/indestructible, Sukhaswaroopa/source of welfare and happiness, Sarvaroop/omnipresent, Ananth/eternal, Dhayanidhi/compassionate. Oh! Prabho, I am unfortunate driven afar from singing in praise of you, hence I have trapped myself in the toxic poison of worldly matters. Oh! Sarvajja/omnipotent, omniscient, you are the protector of distressed souls, Oh! Murari, kindly protect me from sinking in the ocean of worldly existence, Oh! Kripanidhan, kindly provide your helping hand.”

Chapter – 164-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of devotion for purity and serenity of mind

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, I have surrendered at your lotus feet, Oh! Sri Hari, kindly protect your vows to your devotees. Oh! Prabho, I have not practiced devotion, meditation, Yoga, Japa, Thapa, vows, or I haven’t observed celibacy, fire sacrifices, purity of mind and body, or I did not follow righteous deeds, or Shama, Dhama, Sathyam, Dhaya, Dhanam, Dhyanam, Astheyam, Shaucham, Arjjavam, Ahimsa, etc. so how can I approach you with a request to protect me? Oh! Prabho, my mind wanted to say something, but I feel ashamed of my sinful deeds, hence I am afraid of approaching you with a request to protect. Oh! Prabho, Veda, and Agamashasthras highly singing in praise of your compassion, you are Pathithapavan/protector of distressed and desolate people, therefore it removes my anxiousness. Oh! Prabho, I am drenched in the toxic poison of worldly matters of richness, possession, wealth, money, fame, children, wife, companion, and relatives of fleeting nature from birth. Alas! my chase for material and physical pleasures has not stopped yet or I did not feel satisfied. Oh! Prabho, I am dull-minded, I am soaked in your powerful Maya/illusion which is abandoned like the ‘vomit’ by the intellectuals, Santh, Mahathma, and noble souls. While chasing after the diversified matters of appearance, sound, touch, smell, and passion, I have adopted all unscrupulous ways to achieve the same, I have followed all immoral ways to satiate my mind and body, thereby I have accumulated mountain-sized sins. Oh! Prabho, I am sinful, and impure drenched in Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara. Oh! Gopal, you are the savior of the distressed soul, I have fallen before your doorsteps, kindly accept me and protect me.”

Chapter – 163-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The glorious legends of Lord Sri Hari

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mahaprabhu, Oh! Kripanidhan Oh! Paramadhani/wealthiest, Oh! Damodar, you are the source of welfare and happiness to your devotees, kindly safeguard them. Oh! Prabho, the elephant Gajendra who was caught on the leg by a crocodile in the pond, cried out for help and remembered the Lord of the Universe, instantly you have hurried to protect leaving your celestial vehicle Garuda, further you sliced the crocodile with your disc and protected the elephant, Gajendra. Oh! Prabho, whenever Pandavas was in trouble, you rushed to protect them, once Maharishi Dhurvass accompanied by thousands of Rishis arrived as a guest in the hermitage of Yudhishtira, there was nothing to serve the Rishis to remove their appetite, at that point of time you have appeared and protected Pandavas from the curse of Maharishi Dhurvasa. Oh! Prabho, your child devotee Prahaladh was tortured in many ways by his father Hiranyakashipu, you have appeared before the child at his call in one of the pillars assuming the half lion- half man /Nrisimha, and ripped off the chest of demon Hiranyakashipu. Oh! Kripanidhan, Devi Dhraupadhi was seized on hair by Dhussasan and dragged to the large assembly of Kaurava, he humiliated Dhraupadhi pulling her clothes from the body, at that moment she remembered your kindness, immediately there was a stream of clothes rushed towards her and Devi Dhraupadi was protected from further disgrace. Oh! Prabho, you have crushed the pride of the King of Magadha, Jarasandha, who was killed in a fierce battle with Bheem, further you have released all those Kings imprisoned by the wicked Jarasandha. Oh! Prabho, you are too compassionate and kind to your devotees, your glories are countless, beyond description. Oh! Karunamaya, Oh! Murari, kindly shower your grace upon me too.”

Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, you are the savior of the distressed soul, kindly safeguard your vow to your devotees. I am unfortunate and dull-minded, spend most of my life chasing after worldly matters of fleeting nature, and constantly pushing myself into grief and agony, hence I have driven afar from your lotus feet. Oh! Prabho, I was drenched in your powerful Maya/illusion, therefore I have taken great pleasure in wealth, richness, money, fame, possession, wife, children, companion, and relatives, that have impermanent nature thereby repeatedly throwing myself into deep distress in the absence of them, unfortunately after all these sufferings, I cannot stop chasing after material and physical pleasure. Oh! Prabho, I have heard your compassionate nature from Santh, Mahathma, and noble souls, I have listened to your glorious legends describing your kindness to your devotees. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Vrajaraj, you have given the ferry like the practice of devotion, Namasmaran to liberate the souls from worldly existence, I am unfortunate did not practice the worship or devotion at your lotus feet in the three important phases of life/childhood, adulthood, and youth. Chapter – 161-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of devotion to get rid of accumulated sins of several births

Sri Surdasa Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, you are the savior of distressed and desolate people, you cannot bear to watch your devotees in grief and suffering, you would nip off the troubles of your devotees immediately, like the farmer remove the unwanted grasses from the crop before it gets too late and destroy the crops. Oh! Prabho, you are impartial to your devotees, you are kind and compassionate to all your devotees, and even the lowest class/fishermen will have the sight of beautiful chirping birds before them, in the same manner, kindly shower your grace upon me. Oh! Prabho, the sins committed by words, mind, and actions of several births resemble the unfathomable ocean, kindly shower your compassionate grace upon me so that I can abandon those sinful deeds.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, I am dull-minded, I have driven afar from your lotus feet while chasing after the material and physical pleasures of impermanent nature, like the stray dog, wanders aimlessly, thus I have abandoned the most propitious lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari which is the source of all the happiness and welfare. Oh! Prabho, I was ignorant and attached to worldly matters and diversified sounds, touch, smell, passion, and appearance that cannot bring permanent bliss, although I was chasing after those insignificant matters of possession, richness, money, fame, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. with excessive greed. Oh! Prabho, I have thoroughly understood that it is impossible to achieve satisfaction or contentment from worldly matters. Oh! Prabho, I am a shameless creature have repeatedly got insulted while acquiring the possession of worldly matters. I did not find the serenity of mind, instead, I had to face disgrace and humiliation. Oh! Prabho, you are supreme Bhramam, omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent, you are flawless. Oh! Prabho, you are that Sacchidhanandha Swaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, you are the Lord of Universe and its living and non-living things, Oh! Prabho, I was foolish-minded and abandoned your lotus feet which is the source of all the happiness and auspiciousness, and I was chasing after the material and physical pleasures of fleeting nature.”

Chapter – 159-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The impermanent material matters of richness, money, wealth, possession, fame, children, wife, companion, and relatives cannot provide permanent bliss

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Madhav, my mind is impure, uncontrollable, and reckless, it is like an untamed elephant, causing me anxiety and helplessness. Oh! Prabho, my mind is dull, it is taking pleasure in the darkness of ignorance. Oh! Sarangapani, my impure mind drenched in the Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, is chasing after the worldly matters of possession, richness, wealth, money, children, wife, companion and relatives of fleeting nature, hence it is driven me afar from the devotion at your lotus feet, eventually hurling into the cycles of birth and death, throwing into the wombs of animals, birds, reptiles, humans, etc. Oh! Prabho, I am a dull-minded taking immense pleasure in the material and physical matters of imperishable nature, like 1) the thief searching for gold, 2) the fish get attracted to the worm on the hook, does not take notice of forthcoming trouble likewise, my mind is chasing after the infinite sounds, smell, touch, touch, and passion, without taking notice of Mrithyu/death, which is relentlessly following. Oh! Prabho, my mind is fidgety and unbending, like the fireflies that get attracted to the earthen lamp and get themselves burned to death, likewise my interest in worldly matters compels me to commit various sins by words, deeds, and thoughts, and pushing me into constant grief and agony, although my mind is uncontrollable. Oh! Prabho, I am ignorant like the monkeys that collect Gujjar/rosary seeds and sit on the piled seeds to remove the chillness, alas! the moment it takes a seat on the seeds gets muddle likewise, I chase after material matters such as possession, richness, wealth, money, children, wife, companion, and relatives of impermanent nature, that cannot give permanent bliss, even though I am not willing to abandon them as the parrots get attracted to the fresh alluring red flowers of Semar tree, take a nip on the fruit, and get the sticky substance of thread on its beak eventually get troubled with it likewise, my mind gets attracted to the outer appearance, take taste in it, later realizes that it was not at all worth chasing, eventually pushing myself into the well of grief and distress due to the sin committed. Oh! Prabho, I have taken several births, have been into different wombs, did not perform any righteous deeds, hence I did not earn piousness, or Bhakti or Gnana or Vairagya. Oh! Prabho, how did I describe the sins committed by me? Oh! Prabho, I am impure by mind, words, and deeds, but you are the savior of distressed and desolate, hence kindly protect me from the grief of worldly existence and repeated births, and thereby protect your honor as well.”

Chapter – 158-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika –Sharanagathi

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, you have wasted a precious life as humans achieved after piousness of several births, you have ruined life chasing after material and physical pleasures of impermanent nature, thus you have driven afar from the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, finally, you have lost to achieve the ultimate object, the supreme Bhramam resides as the soul in the Jeeva. Oh! Mortals, your excessive attachment to material matters, possession, richness, fame, money, children, wife, wealth, companion, relatives, etc. has ruined the inner eyes of wisdom, and your interest in infinite sounds, touch, passion, smell, and appearances destroyed the outer eyes as well. At last, the remaining days of life are swollen with grief, guilt, and suffering, the body has lost its charm and strength, the mind has become weak, limbs are unwilling to listen to the mind overburdened with the fear of death, illnesses, and grief of separation from the beloved ones. Oh! Prabho, you have showered your compassionate grace on the people with ugly looks/Kubdi/Kubja, sinner Ajamila, and several grave sinners too. Oh! Dhayalu Shiromani/supremely gracious, who does not achieve your grace after surrendering at your lotus feet? Who left unnoticed? After all these, then why did you leave me unnoticed? Oh! Prabho, kindly liberate me from the bottomless ocean of worldly existence which is nothing other than grief and suffering”

Chapter – 157-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The  absolute truth/Paramarththa Thaththva/ all the material matters are impermanent and the soul is permanent

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Madhav, my mind is too obstinate, not willing to stop its chase for physical and material pleasure, it is attached to the infinite and diversified matters of Prakrithi/nature/Universe, that has fleeting nature, my body is aching, getting old, and weak every second, alas! my mind is too stubborn causing grief by chasing after the worldly matters of possession, richness, fame, money, children, wife, companion, and relatives. Oh! Prabho, my mind is wandering into ten directions day and night seeking material and physical pleasure, like the parrot does not leave the Semar fruit and gets troubled with its gluey kind of nature. Likewise, my mind is getting attached to the infinite sounds, touch, passion, appearance, and smells that do not leave me without causing pain and grief. Oh! Prabho, I have understood the absolute fact that I have been into different wombs, and in each birth, I have made several relationships such as father, mother, son, brother, etc., and naturally, I have to get separated from all those relationships which cause immense grief. Oh! Prabho, after knowing the Paramarththa Thaththva, I am still getting attached to those infinite matters of the material world, like the owl does not accept the brightness of the Sun. Oh! Prabho, I am dull-minded and impure, but the whole Universe knows about your kindness and compassion. Oh! Prabho, you are the Lord of the Universe, who is the source of happiness and welfare, like the sun removes the darkness. Oh! Prabho, kindly fasten the bee-like wandering my mind on your lotus feet, and shower your compassionate grace upon me so that while living in the material world I will not forget your sacred names and absolute truth/Paramarththa Thaththva/ all the material matters are impermanent and the soul is permanent.”

Chapter – 157-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The attachment to the diversified matters of Universe causes grief and suffering

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, kindly liberate me from the grief of worldly existence, do not know how many wombs I have been to, and how many sins I have accumulated, Oh! Kripasindhu, Oh! Murui, kindly do not abandon me in this birth, I am already sunken in the grief of worldly existence, I have drenched into the illusion like a bottomless ocean of worldly existence, and floating along with the waves of infinite Shabda/sound, Sparsha/touch, Rasa/passion, Roop/appearance and Gandha/smell, the impurities of mind such as lust, desire, ego, jealousy, anger, pride, arrogance, and ignorance while floating in the powerful water current causing me immense grief. The sensory organs are like the fishes chasing after their prey, and causing terrible pain. Oh! Prabho, I am exhausted carrying the overload of sins accumulated in the past several births, the excessive physical and material desires do not let me walk steadily. The impurities of mind such as Kama, Krodha, Loba, Moha, Madha, Mathshcharya, and Ahamkara are the blaze that does not allow me to take a sigh of relief. Oh! Prabho, the excessive attachment to children, grandchildren, and wife does not allow me to look at the ferry of Namasmaran/remembrance of sacred names of the Lord so that I can get rid of attachments to worldly matters and board the safest ferry of Bhagavan Nama. Oh! Karunakandha, Oh! Prabho, I am completely worn out sinking in the deep ocean of worldly existence, I am terribly upset and tired of Thapathraya/three kinds of grief of worldly existence, Oh! Shyamsundhar, kindly listen to my cries, protect me from the ocean of worldly existence, and safely load me into the sacred land of Vraja.”

Chapter – 156-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Vinaya Pathrika/earnest request to Lord Sri Hari

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Kripanidhi, I have not experienced the serenity of mind, my heart is burning with the impurities of lust, desire, ego, jealousy, pride, Ahamkara, and Mamakara. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Gopal, how can I get rid of the grief and sufferings of the worldly existence/Thapathraya/three kinds of grief without your grace? Or without practicing devotion at your lotus feet, or not remembering your glorious legends? Oh! Prabho, you are the source of the functioning of the mind, intellect, chiththa, Ahamkara, Prana, Karma, and Gnanendhriyas, and none of my sensory organs are not in my control, they keep chasing the infinite sounds, appearance, passion, touch, and smell. Oh! Prabho, I have been senseless, and keep committing various sins by mind, words, and actions to fulfill my bodily and material desires. Oh! Prabho, I have learned Universe and its living and non-living things are illusionary, and it has impermanent nature, the mind, actions, infinite sounds, appearances, passions, touch, and smell are imaginary, still, I am not satisfied with my desires, getting attached to the worldly matters and pushing myself into constant grief. Oh! Prabho, my mind, and body is getting weak every second, and the anxiousness and the fear have taken away my appetite, and sleep. Oh! Prabho, Oh! Mayapathi, I have drenched in your unconquerable Maya, my mind is not listening to my wisdom, it is unwilling to accept the absolute truth, that is all the material matters are perishable and the soul is imperishable. Oh! Prabho, your powerful Maya making my mind dance to the mouth of terrible death. Oh! Prabho, my mind is drenched in the fleeting nature of worldly matters of possession, wealth, money, fame, richness, children, wife, companion, and relatives, and pushing myself into constant grief in their absence, acting like stray dogs and monkeys, that consume toxic meals and fall into terrible death. Oh! Kripanidhi kindly sprinkles the water from your lotus feet on your fervent devotees and provides intense devotion and faith at your lotus feet, so that the Jeeva get rid of Thapathraya/three kinds of grief and Jananamarana/repeated birth and deaths.”

Chapter – 155-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Vinaya Pathrika/earnest request to Lord Sri Hari

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, I am a grave sinner, my head to toe is sunken in sins of several births, I am ashamed of it. My mind is swollen with lust, desire, pride, jealousy, anger, Ahamkara and Mamakara, I am drenched in worldly matters of possession, richness, fame, money, wealth, children, wife, companion, and relatives, etc. Oh! Prabho, I have not seen any sinner like me before my eyes. I have committed sins in the three significant phases of life such as Balyavastha/childhood, Kishoravastha/adulthood, and Youthful/Yauvana Avastha, I have been ignorant in fact, these phases of life should be utilized to worship Lord Sri Hari. Oh! Prabho, even after committing various sins by deed, mind, and words, I have been chasing after physical and material pleasures I am not satiated yet, still continuing the same, hence there won’t be a sinner like me before or will not be there in the future, so I consider myself as a grave sinner. Oh! Prabho, even the abode of Yama is not willing to accommodate me, Lord Yama is ashamed to take me to his abode because of my accumulated sins, hence he left me unnoticed. Oh! Prabho, you are too kind and compassionate, you have liberated sinners from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence, those were not real grave sinners like me. Oh! Prabho, if you have showered your compassionate grace upon me, and liberated me from the sufferings of worldly existence, once again your fame would spread all over the Universe.”

Chapter – 154-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of devotion to achieve perpetual grace of the Lord

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, Oh! Sri Hari, what is not possible for you? Your compassionate grace would make the dumb an excellent orator, the person who is not able to walk would climb up the hills with your grace, and the blind would enjoy the beauty of nature. Oh! Prabho, there is nothing impossible for you. Oh! Prabho, the Bhramin Ajamila followed a prostitute in the woods, ultimately later years of age he remembered the name of his youngest son ‘Narayana’, and got liberated from the emissaries of Yama. Oh! Prabho, Kubidi/who has three visible curves on the body approached you with the rich fragrant sandalwood paste, and smeared it on your entire body with pure love, in return you transformed her into a lovely woman and fulfilled her desire. Oh! Prabho, you have removed the mountain-sized sins of Ajamila and Kubidi with your grace. Oh! Prabho, the penniless Bhramin Sudhama visited you with pure love and devotion, you have showered an abundance of wealth and richness equivalent to Lord Indra. The sons of Pandu followed righteousness, you have been with them during all the troubles and protected them, finally, they won the vicious battle against Kauravas, even though they had a small number of army men. Oh! Prabho, you have brought back the deceased son of your preceptor from the abode of Yama, and offered the child as Gurudhakshina and highly pleased your preceptor. Oh! Prabho, you are capable to fulfil all the desires of the worshiper, Oh! Mortals, worship Lord Sri Gopal and sing in praise of him to achieve perpetual grace.”

Chapter – 153-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of pure love and devotion

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Yadhunatha, you are too compassionate and kind to your devotees, hence whoever utters your glorious names would achieve your grace instantly, they would get rid of Karmavasana/passions at ease, and ultimately the Karmavasana and Namajapa Karmaphala would get annulled. The Dharma Karma Marga/righteous deeds induced in your devotees are highly meritorious and easily attainable with the Namajapa, whoever performs charity, Dhama, Shama, Sathyam, Dhaya, Dhanam, Ahimsa, celibacy, austerities, vows, etc. these noble deeds are supremely auspicious would bring an abundance of piousness to the worshiper, even though that would be considered as Karma performed without pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, and any Karma or charities performed without Bhagavath Bhakthi,/devotion the performer would be considered as a non-believer. Oh! Mortals, the rarest birth as a human achieved with the piousness earned in several births should be utilized to practice devotion at the lotus feet of Sri Hari, therefore contemplate and meditate upon the supreme Lord Sri Hari, and sing in praise of him. In this Kali era, piousness can be easily attainable with the singing in praise of Lord Sri Hari and listening to his glorious legends with intense devotion and faith, not from any of the laborious rites.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Sri Harinama is Sukhadhama/abode of bliss

Chapter – 152-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Sri Harinama is Sukhadhama/abode of bliss

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, the glorious ‘Sri Ramanama’ is the affluence of the distressed and desolate Jeeva/soul, it cannot be stolen, or lost, it would always protect the soul from grief and sufferings of worldly existence. The ‘Sri Ramanama’ protect the Jeeva from Thrividha Thapa /three kinds of grief 1) Adhidheivik/ grief caused by natural calamities, flood, drought, epidemic, famine, earthquake, forest-fire, etc. 2) Adhyathmik/grief caused by aging, illnesses, fear of death, separation from beloved ones and finally 3) Adhibhauthik/ grief caused by the attachment to possession, wealth, money, fame, richness, wife, children, relatives, companion and the grief in the absence of the same. Oh! Mortals, whoever has taken shelter in the ‘Sri Harinama’ cannot be sunk or burned into ashes. Sri Vaikundanath Sri Hari is Sukhadhama/provider of bliss, he is the source of welfare and permanent bliss.”

Chapter – 151-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The practice of recitation of Bhagavannama to get rid grief and suffering

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Wicked mind, listen to me carefully, leave your interest in worldly matters of possession, richness, fame, money, wealth, children, wife, companion, relatives, etc. it has fleeting nature, leave your Ahamkara, Mamakara, lust, desire, ego, jealousy, and pride which would hurl you into constant grief and agony.  The sufferings and grief of worldly existences are Kalagni/colossal fire, it would swallow you anytime, before that take shelter at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, and Bhagavannama/recitation of sacred names of Lord, it would take you to the ocean of bliss. Oh! Mortals, if you have taken refuge in ‘Sri Ramanama’, it would protect you from the fear and anxiousness of death, aging, illnesses, and Thrividha Thapa/three kinds of grief, it would protect you from the fire as well as flood/ sufferings of worldly existence, even the emissaries of Lord Yama will not appear before you. Oh! Mortals, do not abandon your duties and responsibilities while in the Samsara, while performing all those duties you can easily develop pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari. Oh! Mortals, ponder over the declarations of Shruthi and Shasthras, no material matters could provide permanent bliss, there is no supreme abode other than Sri Baikunda/Anandha Dham/blissful abode free from grief and sufferings. Oh! Mortals, the rarest birth as a human has achieved to get freed from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence, and finally, liberation from repeated births, hence take shelter in the recitation of ‘Sri Harinama’ and cross the bottomless ocean of worldly existence at ease.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – Sri Ramanama symbolizes Dharma/righteousness

Chapter – 150-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Sri Ramanama symbolizes Dharma/righteousness

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “ Oh! Mortals, the two letters ‘Ra Ma’ has a great influence on the mind of the worshiper, these two powerful letters are the seeds of Dharmaroopi Vriksha/tree of righteousness, and the constant recitation of ‘Sri Ramanama’ would nurture the plant to grow into a huge tree. The Rishis and Sages represent the Rajahamsa/royal swans, with their constant meditation and contemplation, Shama, Dhama, Dhanam, Dhyanam, Sathyam, Dhaya, Shuchi, Astheyam, Arjjavam, Ahimsa, Swadhyaya, Bhramacharya, etc. symbolizes the two wings, they fly high with their constant austerities and achieves the Mukthiroopi/Paramdham/supreme abode/ fruit from the Dharmaroopi Vruksha, it removes repeated births and death as well. The Ajjana/ignorance and arrogance hurl the Jeeva into repeated births, and the radiance from the Surya and Chandra removes the darkness of ignorance, the Veda and scriptures highly speak about the brilliance of the same. The Surya/sun and Chandra/moon remove the grief of the living and non-living things, in the form of day and night, hence these two have been highly praised in the scriptures. Oh! Mortals, the recitation of ‘Sri Ramanama’ is the way to achieve Bhakti/devotion/pure love and Jjana/wisdom/Paramarththa Thaththvam/absolute truth, hence recite the ‘Sri Ramanama’ with pure love and devotion.”

Adhbuth Ramanama Ke Ang | Dharmaakur Ke Pavana Dhvai Dhala Mukthi Bandhu Thataka || Munimana Hamsa Pancha Juga Jakai Bala Udi Oordha Jath | Janama Marana Katana Kau Karthari Theechana Bahu Bikhyatha || Andhar Ajjana Harana Kau Rabi Sasi Jugala Prakasa | Basara Nisi Dhoau Karai Prakasith Maha Kumaga Anayasa || Dhuhau Loka Sukhakarana Harana Dhukha Bedha Puranani Sakhi | Bhakthi Jjana Ke Panth Sura The Prema Niranthara Bhakhi ||

Chapter – 149-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of constant recitation of ‘Sri Ramanama’ to get rid of grief and suffering

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “ Who has not achieved devotion and liberation from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence, after reciting the ‘Sri Ramanama’? Oh! Mortals! Even the grave sinner has attained liberation from fear of repeated births and sufferings of worldly existence. 1)The prostitute/Ganika has attained Mukthi by mere listening to the ‘Sri Ramanama’ sung by the parrot which was bought from the devotee of Lord Sri Hari and was well taken care of her, and 2) the Hunter/Byadh who shot an arrow at the thumb feet of Lord Sri Krishna mistaking that of baby deer, while the Lord was returning to the abode of Sri Baikundam, even that hunter has attained liberation from worldly existence. The illustrious Maharishi Vedavyasa who is the composer of the glorious eighteen Puranas, and Upapuranas did not achieve serenity of mind after writing various sacred texts, finally, he attained supreme bliss after the composition of the glorious legend of Srimad Bhagavath which elaborately describes the birth of Lord Sri Krishna and his various amusements.  Oh! Mortals, the worship of that supreme Lord is conducted in any of the nine types of devotion/Navadhabhakthi, surprisingly the Lord graces his devotees the way he has perceived and worshiped, ultimately the supreme Lord yearns for a pure love from his devotee, and nothing else.  Oh! Mortals, there is no use in giving charity of gold in the size of mount Meru without pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishna, the charity without devotion and faith at the lotus feet of Lord and living hundreds and thousands of Yugas without the devotion are equivalent, both will not bring the serenity of mind or fruitfulness in life. The life without pure love and devotion at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari hurl the Jeeva/soul into constant miseries and grief of worldly existence and repeated births.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of recitation of ‘Sri Ramanama’

Chapter – 148-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The significance of recitation of ‘Sri Ramanama’

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, the moment the tongue mumble ‘Ram’, all the righteousness would be restored in it, hence it is considered that the person has followed all the righteousness in his/her life, mere the pronunciation of Sri Ramanama would bring an abundance of piousness. The preceptors, twice-born, Santh and Mahathma who constantly sing in praise of the Lord, churn the Veda and Shasthraroopi Dhahi/curd, meticulously, and serve the Ghee derived in abundance to the Sadhakas/worshipers in Mudka/earthen pot. The preceptors and Mahatmas who follow strict austerities and penance, vows, Shama, Dhama, Sathyam, Shaucham, celibacy, Arjjavam, Astheyam, Ahimsa, Dhanam, Dhaya, Swadhyaya, etc. are the reservoirs of wisdom, therefore the association with these preceptors and Sanath Mahathma would pass on their wisdom, and knowledge of Bhramam resembles ghee to their disciples. Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman adopted the ‘Sri Ramanama’, the essence of Veda, and took shelter in Lord Rama. Oh! Mortals, whoever has taken shelter in the recitation of ‘Sri Ramanama’ with utmost faith have achieved the serenity of mind, all their grief and sufferings were turned into ashes and ultimately attained immense bliss. Oh! Mortals, the fortunate ones have taken refuge in the sacred name of Lord Sri Rama, singing in praise of his glories and made their life fruitful.”

Chapter – 147-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The methods to achieve nearness to Lord/Bhagavath Prapthi

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Mortals, the rarest birth achieved as a human should be used to achieve the Bhagavath Prapthi/nearness to the Lord, if not the birth of the person would be considered a burden on the Earth, or a living corpse. Oh! Mortals, the tongue which is used to recite the glorious names and legends of Lord Sri Hari achieve fruitfulness, the eyes attain worthiness by witnessing the lotus feet of supreme Lord Sri Hari, and the mind/intellect/Chiththa that does not take pleasure in worldly matters, or infinite Shabdha, Sparsha, Rasa, Roopa, Gandha of diversities of the Universe achieves abundance of merit by contemplating and meditating upon the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari. Oh! Mortals, the fortunate people take pleasure in listening to the glorious myths of Lord Sri Hari, they drink the nectar-like legends of the Lord through their ears. The hands achieve worthiness by selflessly serving the lotus feet of Lord Sri Hari, and the devotees of the Lord, preceptors, and Santh, Mahathma, noble souls, and twice-born/Bhramin. The legs achieve their worthiness by visiting the sacred Brindhavan and adoring the supreme Lord Sri Shyamsundhar, it would multiply the pure love and devotion at his lotus feet.”
