Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham– Karma Padhdhathi / Theory of Karma

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham

Chapter – 10– Karma Padhdhathi / Theory of Karma

Oh! Jeeva, be mindful of your Karma, I shall describe the role of Karma in your life, I shall prostrate before the deities, I shall prostrate before the destiny as well,  which is powerful and pre-destined by the Karma of the Jeeva, therefore the fate is powerful than the deities. The Punya and Papakarma is the source of happiness and sorrows of the Jeeva, therefore the Karma holds a significant role in the life of an individual, the righteousness and the depraved deeds of the Jeeva causes the dispersion of the fruit of Karma, hence Lord Bhrama or deities remains silent before the Karma of the Jeeva, I shall repeatedly prostrate before that ‘Karma’.

I shall prostrate before the Karma, which caused Lord Bhrama to conduct the work of potter in the Bhramanda like huge pot, and creates the Jeeva like numerous pot which bears the fruits of its own Karma. Lord Mahavishnu who undertakes various incarnations to protect these Jeeva and explore in the dangerous woods of wild animals like Bhramanda to protects the Jeeva. Lord Mahadeva attired in ragged clothing, holding trident and skull as a vessel of alms to remove the terrible sins of the Jeeva, and Surya as the Lord of day. I shall repeatedly prostrate before the Karma which plays a significant role in the life of deities and Jeeva as well.

Oh! Jeeva, worship that supreme soul  who transformed the wicked people into virtuous, the enemies into companions, the invisible into visible, and the toxic poison into nectar. Therefore worship the supreme Lord is the source of all the righteous deeds, which is capable to fulfill all your desires. Oh! Jeeva, do not chase after the material comforts, wealth, possession, fame, and do not get over-attached to families, children, and relatives, which has impermanent nature, that could enhance Thrigunas in you. It could not provide permanent happiness to you, it has fleeting nature, and finally, it will heave you in endless miseries and sorrows and to the cycles of repeated births as well.

Oh! Jeeva, listen to me carefully I shall describe the significance of righteous deeds, your Sathkarma/righteous deeds in several births would provide comfortable living, marvelous houses, attractive women to serve you, numerous attendants with the fan, immense wealth, and it would continue in several births. Once, the fruit of Sathkarma ends, your life would end up like the crystal beads detached from its thread, which scatter and spread all over. Once, the fruit of the Punyakarma gets over, the comforts and luxuries from the life of Jeeva would disappear and push them into extreme anguish and sufferings, like the scattered precious pearl from the necklace.

Oh! Jeeva, be it good or evil deed, think before you act. The intellectuals do not hurry themselves to any deed; they think over it again and again and act wisely. Any deed performed without proper thinking would end up in disaster; it would hurt the Jeeva, like the arrow shot in the heart. Therefore take time and think before act. The sacred land on Bharathakhanda is the Karmabhoomi, which is the appropriate land on the Earth to perform all the propitious deeds which provide an abundance of meritorious rewards. Oh! Jeeva, after achieving life in the Karmabhoomi, if the person is not interested in Karma, Vratha, Anushtana, Japa, Tapa, which brings an abundance of piousness, is same as cooking the fodder of animals in the vessel made of precious gems, and the fodder of animals cooked in the flame of Sandalwood. It would be like plowing the infertile land with the golden plow and constructing a fence around the lesser valued grains, after uprooting the high quality of plantain.

Oh! Jeeva, listen to me carefully, the physical attractiveness would not yield any results, your birth in the higher clan or discipline could not help you, and the deep-rooted knowledge in Shastras and scriptures won’t help you, and your efforts to please the wealthiest and living in that money would not help you for a longer period of time. Oh! Jeeva, your good and righteous deeds only would yield results for several births. The austerities, Vratha, Tapa, Dhyana, Japa, only could make your life fruitful, remember that it was the fruit of your Poorvajanma that provides happiness and grief. Therefore, let the deluge take place and cause massive destruction, or conduct journey to the tip of Mahameru, let the enemies win over the battle, let people engage in agriculture, commercial activities, or serving the wealthiest, let people achieve knowledge in all the art forms, let all those Jeeva work hard and fly freely in the sky, whatever happens, and going to happen in this Universe are based on the results of the piousness of Poorvajanma, therefore whatever supposed to happen definitely going to take place.

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the benefits of Sathkarma, the piousness performed in the previous births would protect the Jeeva, while sleeping in the dense wood, or in the battlefields, or in the water or fire, or in the middle of enemies or while living in the hills, or even if the Jeeva is insane and stuck in the middle of crisis would come out without hurt with the fruits of Sathkarma. The people who have an abundance of fruits of Punyakarma would consider the dense wood as a palace, all the Jeevas are his/her own people and they consider the entire Earth as the storehouse of treasures. In short, the Jeeva with the abundance of piousness would consider all the life events as most promising.

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham– Dhaiva Padhdhathi

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham

Chapter – 9– Dhaiva Padhdhathi

Oh! Jeeva, Karma and its fruits decide the destiny; the mental and physical strength cannot re-write the destiny of person, therefore surrender to that supreme Lord who is the disperser of the fruit of Karma. Lord Indra who has great prowess and splendor, has Sage Brihaspati as his minister, the powerful Vajrayudha as weapon and Airavatha as a celestial vehicle, he had several thousand deities as the warriors, the abode of deities as a fortress, Lord Hari as the protector, even after all these he had to meet failures fighting against the demons. Oh! Jeeva, leave your haughtiness and arrogance, and take shelter at the lotus feet of the supreme Lord. I shall narrate the pathetic story of a mouse created a small hole in the wooden box, and hurried into the mouth of a hungry snake which was locked inside the box for several days, was about to die of hunger, the snake happily ate the mouse and got out of the wooden box through the hole made of the mouse. Therefore, destiny is so powerful, oh! Jeeva, do not miscalculate the material wealth and bondage is indestructible, it has to meet its ruin at one point in time. It is the grace of that Supreme Lord works favorable and unfavorable during these times.

Oh! Jeeva, the grace of the Supreme Lord makes the noble people rise from the fall, like the rubber ball/Kandhuka, bounce back from the Earth. Unfortunately, the people who have bad luck fall on the Earth, like the ball made of mud, and shatters into pieces. I shall describe the story of an unfortunate soul, a bald-headed person hurried under the shade of a palm tree with full of ripened fruits, to get rid of scorching heat. Alas! The moment the person took a seat under it, a large ripened fruit fell on his head and wounded badly.   This is how fate works on the unfortunate person, who lacks the grace of that supreme Lord. Hence, the unfortunate person carries troubles with them wherever they go. Oh! Jeeva, haven’t seen the powerful animal on the Earth elephants get into the trap? Haven’t seen the powerful birds, and venomous serpents get in the trap? Haven’t seen the Sun and Moon undergo eclipse? Haven’t seen the intellectuals and scholars sufferings from poverty? Therefore surrender to that supreme Lord who is all-pervasive, and omniscient.

Oh! Jeeva, Lord Bhrama who is Vidhatha creates the powerful and wise rulers, he creates Purushashreshta as an ornament to the Earth, in this way, he has created the whole Universe and its living beings with good and bad, and destroys the same at his will. Oh! Jeeva, it is impossible to re-write the destiny, Lord Chandra is the source of nectar, he is the Lord of medicinal herbs, he is accompanied and revered by the physicians/Shathabhishak, he adores on the matted hair locks of Lord Shiva, even after all these, and the Kshayaroga/waning of the moon has no end or cure. Oh! Sakha, a potter skillfully add mud on the wheel and rotates it to creates stunning pots, the Jeeva keeps strangled itself in the redundant thoughts and invites troubles, do not understand the end results of the relentless spin of the wheel of thoughts.

Oh! Jeeva, the Mahathma do not give up their courage during the hours of crisis, like the mountains Himavan, Nishadha, Vindhya, Malyavan, Pariyathraka, Gandhamadhana, and Malaya, “Mahendhro Malaya Sahayassanuman Riksha Parvatha: | Vindhyashcha Pariyathrashcha Sapthaitha Kualparvatha: ||” and Saptha Samudhra/seven Oceans, Lavana Samudra, Sharkarasamudra, Dhadhisamudra,  Ghrithasamudra, Surasamudhra, Ksheerasamudra, and Shudhdhajalasamudra do not change their characteristics until the destruction of Yuga. In this manner, the Mahathma do not give up their nature even if they meet their death.

Oh! Jeeva, stop your mad chase for the material welfare and comforts, destiny is so powerful; everything is pre-destined by the supreme Lord who is the commander of the Universe and its living beings. You are destined to receive the fruit of Karma, therefore leave your greed. The Chathaka birds quench their thirst from the raindrops, the intensity of rain may vary, but they could take up the water as it was pre-destined to them. Oh! Jeeva, we are like that Chathaka birds, the greed in Jeeva is uncontrollable, determined to take up whole rain in the mouth, Alas! It badly fails to achieve the same without the knowledge of the powerful destiny.

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham– Dhairya Padhdhathi

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham

Chapter – 8– Dhairya Padhdhathi

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the nature of the courageous people, who never give up easily and strive hard to achieve the goal.  The deities and demons together engaged in the churning of the milky ocean for the nectar of immortality, the numerous precious gems did not satisfy the deities or it did not distract them from their task, they did not stop when the Halahala poison emerged out of the ocean which was capable to destroy the whole Universe, they have continued the churning the ocean until they have achieved the nectar of immortality. The cowards do not show up the courage to initiate any task, because of the fear of obstacles; they did not accomplish the task and easily give up when the minor hindrances occur.

Oh! Jeeva, the virtuous and highly skilled people never give up the task entrusted upon them or retire, until and unless they achieve success in it. These successful people make the Earth comfortable place to live in, these people do not hesitate to  leave the worldly matters and bondage and find peace in the woods, they are not hesitant to sleep on the ground keeping their hands as a pillow, and these powerful people have made the Kingdom of great splendor with their braveness, at times they may adopt the life of an ascetics and undertake complete austerities, sometimes they may take pleasure in their own hard work, sometimes they may abandon the sophisticated life and attire in ragged clothes, and  sometimes they may attire in magnificent silk clothes. These courageous people will not fear of loss of wealth or possessions or fame or family, they are highly skilled to accommodate themselves into any circumstances. They are not attached to worldly matters or bondage; therefore they do not find difficulties in abandoning them.

Oh! Jeeva, the courageous people do not worry about the sarcastic comments of the people who are skilled in social ethics or they do not get over-excited in other’s praise, or the possession of immense wealth, in the same manner, they do not break emotionally at the loss of wealth or lose hopes at the time of the nearness of the death or the end of Yuga. These courageous people will not abandon disciplines or righteousness at any circumstances in their lives, which they have received as wealth from the Sajjanas.

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the characteristics of a courageous person as the one who does not fall for the fleeting look of attractive women, the person who does not burn in the flame of anger, the person who does not have an interest in worldly matters, comforts, luxuries, and bondage, these kinds of courageous people win over the three worlds. The people who possesses virtues, morality, free from impurities like lust, desire, anger, greed, and pride, and the interest in worldly matters and bondages remains highly respected. The courageous persons may sink in the grief, but it would not harm their braveness. The tip of fire always faces upwards, in this manner, the braveness of a courageous person is impossible to break, as it is impossible to keep the tip of the flame downwards. The courageous people will not lose their confidence even if they pushed down from the hills or mountains, or stuck under the sharp teeth of the venomous serpent, or fallen in the massive fire, the courageous people will not leave their tendency to face the danger bravely and fight against it. The person who has possessed the predominant qualities like uprightness, courage, and virtues, which are most approving qualities to the whole world,   consider the colossal fire as water, and the ocean as a small watercourse, the Mount Meru as a small heap of stone, the King of forest lion as a deer, the venomous serpent as a garland, and the toxic poison as nectar.

Oh! Jeeva, the Sajjanas are thoroughly aware of the impermanent nature of the worldly matters and the bondage, like the trees cut down comes into life after a certain period of time, the crescent moon shines brilliantly on the night of Poornima, therefore they do not take pleasure in the impermanent nature of the Prakrithi. Hence, they keep themselves blissful always, do not get over-excited or grieve over the happenings. Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the ornament to a person, prosperity and wealth is achieved with the association of virtuous, Parakrama/valorousness requires control of speech, the achievement of Gnana/wisdom is possible only with the abandonment of interest in worldly matters and bondage, knowledge in Shastras can be achieved with humility, perseverance and endurance. The wealth utilized for charitable purposes, the performance of strict austerities and vow without anger, high endurance, Dharma without deceitfulness are the precious ornaments to a Jeeva.

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham– Paropakara Padhdhathi

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham

Chapter – 7– Paropakara Padhdhathi

Oh! Jeeva I shall describe the nature of the Mahatmas / noble-souls and generous contributor/Paropakara, who are benevolent and most promising to others. These noble-souls are like the trees packed with full of fruits facing the Earth, they are like rain clouds that are too heavy but move unhurriedly, these Sajjanas are humble and good-natured, even after possessing an abundance of wealth. Oh! Jeeva, it is not that the rich fragrances or sandalwood paste adorned in the body or the ornaments decorated from head to toe adds glee to a person. The ears of the intellectuals’ shines with their knowledge in the Shastra and Purana, not with the ear ornament adorned. The hand shines with the performance of enormous charity, not with the bangles adorned in it. The kind-natured people’s body shines with their generosity and selfless service to others.

Lord Surya is the Lord of the day performs the functions as it was designed for him and causes to bloom the lotus flowers,  Lord Chandra spreads luster and causes delight in the Chakravaha, and the rain clouds cause to downpour, these are a natural phenomenon, no one can create obstacles in it. These Sajjanas are most promising, showers an abundance of kindness upon the helpless and distressed people, without waiting for their request or call for help. It is the inborn nature of the Sajjanas to understand the difficulties and requirements of others effortlessly and extend selfless service.

The Sathpurushas is the one, who abandons his own requirements and fulfill the needs of others, it is the superior act/Uththama and the people who perform the charities after taking care of their own needs are Madhyama. The people who always chase after the welfare of their own, and destroys the peace of others are Manushya Rakshasa, and some people find pleasure in causing trouble to others, How to name them? A sincere companion is the one who hinders the wicked deeds, the person who compel to perform good deeds, put a halt to all the unwarranted habits of others, add fame to his/her friend, do not abandon when the another person is in trouble, keep sharing good things with the friend are the characteristics of an ideal friendship/Sanmithra Lakshanam.

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the association with the noble-souls/ascetics, it is like the water added to the milk, that receives the whiteness as well as the sweetness of milk, when heat it on the boiling point causes the water to evaporate and diffuse in the air, immediately the pure milk rushes out of the vessel to put off the fire at the separation of water from it, if a little water sprinkled on the milk would stop to spill out and put off the fire. This is how the relationship with the Sajjana works with the Jeeva. The Sajjanas are powerless to watch the difficulties of the Jeeva depend on them, these Sajjanas are willing to sacrifice anything even their lives for the welfare of others.

Lord Keshava holds the entire Bhramanda in his stomach and undertakes Yoganidra on the milky ocean, on one side there are wicked demons waiting for their turn to harass the world, on the other side mountain-sized distressed people, on the other side the Badavagni of Mahapralaya waiting to swallow the entire creation, it is surprising to note the prowess and endurance of the vast ocean to hold all these on its surface. Oh! Jeeva, these Sathpurushas are like that vast ocean with great prowess and endurance. These Mahatmas are well capable to hold the weight of the entire Bhramanda on their shoulder, like the Koorma. Druva undertook extreme austerities and penances and attained the status of the indestructible pole star, hence all the stars circumambulate the Druva with reverence. The people who are least interested in the welfare of others would remain neither in the surface nor in the Pathal Loka and they take several births as the worms in the fruit like Bhramanda. These kinds of Jeeva is a burden and utter shame on the Earth, have no use of them for the society or its people.

Oh! Jeeva I shall describe the virtues of Sajjana, 1) They do not take pleasure in other’s wealth 2) They have great endurance 3) They have complete control over sense, especially on their pride 4) They are truthful 5) They do not engage in immoral deeds 6) They strictly follow disciplines 7) They respect and depend on the scholars and intellectuals 8) They respect people who deserve to be treated well in the society 9) They remain amicable to their preceptors 10) They keep up the respect of the clan 11) They are kind and promising to  distressed  people 12) They extend selfless service and support to the intellectuals and scholars 13) They will not have enemies. These Sajjanas engages Sathkarma with mind, words, and deeds, they are well capable to satisfy the three worlds with the nectar-like selfless services. They portrait the generosity of others into mountain size, and remain amiable always, they take pleasure in praising others and their services. Alas! These types of Sajjanas are extremely difficult to find and are very less in numbers.

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham– Sajjana Padhdhathi

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham

Chapter – 6– Sajjana Padhdhathi

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the virtues of Sajjana who constantly remains in the association of virtuous, noble-souls, saintly and ascetics engages in the self-less service to them, ultimately achieve knowledge to remove the darkness of ignorance. They respect the noble-souls, they will have humility and simplicity towards them, and they have great respect to preceptors and have a great interest in learning Sadhvishaya. They will have great control over sense and physical relationship with their wives, they do not indulge in matters or conflicts which bring disgrace to them, they will have great devotion at the lotus feet of supreme Lord Mahadeva, and they will not have an association with wicked and deceitful people. I shall reverentially prostrate before those noble-souls.

Oh! Jeeva, the inborn qualities of a noble-soul is immense courage during the hours of threat and calamities, great simplicity and humility in the arrival of sudden wealth, excellent speaking ability, extremely valorous in the battlefield, respectful in the society, great interest in learning of Shashthra and scriptures. These noble-souls have the performance of charities as an ornament to their hands, prostration before the preceptor is the ornament to head, truthful words  are the ornament to the face,  Bhujabala to win over the enemies as ornaments to hands, innocence is the ornaments to heart, listening to the scriptures and sacred texts  are the ornaments to the ears, the above-mentioned virtues are the ornaments of the Mahathma, even though they are not wealthiest.

These noble-souls will not take interest in violence to animals or humans, they will not show interest in abducting the wealth of others, they are truthful, they conduct charities as much as possible from their own capacity, they will not take pleasure in the conversation about the strangers or women, they will not have an interest in other's wealth, they will have great respect to preceptors, they have humility, simplicity, respect and kindness to all the people, they utilize their lifetime in gaining knowledge in various Shastras. The sudden arrival of wealth makes the heart of the Mahathma soft and supple as flowers, during the time of crisis and hardships their heart becomes massive rock.

The Mahatmas/noble souls strictly follow justice and discipline; they won’t indulge in wicked deeds even during the hours of the threat to their lives. They do not beg for alms before the wicked people, the noble-souls will not ask for a favor from their companions or people with little wealth. They conduct their life journey fearlessly; they are unwavering and sincerely follow their preceptors. These noble-souls are highly efficient to perform the extremely difficult ‘Asidharavrath’/conducting Tapasya standing on the tip of the sword, which requires pure concentration.

The noble souls perform charities in secret and they do not publicize their generosity, they receive guests with great humility and do all that required for them, they perform various promising deeds but do not praise them or discuss them in the public, but they highly praise the righteous deeds of others, they do not take pride in their own wealth and status, they do not even think of disrespecting others in dreams, they highly praise the righteous deeds of others, hence it is a kind of Tapasya standing on the tip of the sword. These noble-souls are dispassionate like the water poured on the hot iron that disappears in seconds, unlike the lotus leaf that holds the water droplets, and when these water droplets enter into the seashell creatures, and transforms into precious pearls. The Jeeva turns to Uththama/highly virtuous, Madhyama/respectable and Adhama/wicked are entirely depends on their association and the people surrounded by them.

An ideal son is the one who strictly follows the orders of his parents and respects them, sincerely takes care of them, and ready to sacrifice anything for their happiness. An ideal wife is a woman who sincerely follows the command of her husband, always work for the welfare of her husband, do not even think of the stranger not even in her dreams, and serve the family of her husband and the elders with great respect and love, and strictly follows celibacy. The ideal companion or relative is the one who is promising and free from jealous at all circumstances, be it in the hours of happiness or sorrows, and always work for the welfare of the companion. One thing is definite, these three things are extremely difficult to achieve, and it is available only for the people who are highly fortunate. The noble souls are highly venerable; they earn respect and fame with their strict austerities, hard work, and disciplines, not with the self-praise. They take great effort to fulfill the justifiable desires of others; they handle the disrespect from the wicked people with great endurance, they face the harsh words of them in utter silence and make them feel guilty of their behavior.

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham– Dhurjjana Padhdhathi

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham

Chapter – 5– Dhurjjana Padhdhathi

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the nature of Dhurjjana, they are famous for the act of mercilessness, constantly engages in conflicts and arguments with an intention to win over others, they are jealous of others’ wealth and Parasthree/other women, they are jealous of Sadhus/saints, ascetics and Bandhu/relatives and companions. This Dhurjjanas finds flaws in all, they undervalue the intelligent people who are slow to react due to their foresightedness, they find people who are engaged in austerities and vows are proud and haughty, they complaints dishonesty in the pure people, they complaints the mercilessness in the warrior, they complaints the boldness and the frankness of the saintly people, they find the weakness in the people who are promising to them, they challenge the people who have strength and splendor, they criticize the people who have great skill in speech as chatters, in this way, these Dhurjjanas finds fault in others and make themselves miserable. These Dhurjjanas are constantly in search of the opportunity to criticize the virtues in others.

If a person is highly educated but has above nature of Dhurjjana, he/she should be abandoned for good, the association with such people would bring ill-fame, and miseries.  It is considered as a great sin criticizing a person in his absence. A truthful person does not require the need to observe austerities and vows, and Tapasya. If the heart is pure, does it require the Theertha and Ganga to cleanse it? If a person has great respect and admiration in the society does he requires the support of army of warriors? If a person has the virtues, does he require ornaments to beautify him? If a person is highly educated does he requires wealth? The ill-fame to a person is equivalent to his death. In the above verses the poet brilliantly describes the moralities and immoralities in  a simple manner, the truthfulness is compared with the austerities Tapasya and vow,  the pure heart is compared to the sacred Theertha and Ganga, admiration and self-respect, virtues as the army of a person,  moral values as the ornaments, knowledge as wealth, and finally, the act immoral deeds as putting blame on others and sharply criticizing in their absence as a severe sin, jealous on others achievements, and ill fame as equivalent to death.

The poet describes the seven categories of the people make him sick to death 1) The lusterless moon on the day time 2) The woman who has lost her attractiveness in the latter years of age 3) The pond that has the cluster of shrunken lotus flowers 3) The attractive youth with ignorance and swollen with Maya 4) The wealthiest man who is over-proud and greedy of wealth 5) The Sajjana who constantly undergoes the sufferings of poverty 6)The wicked who works behind the King. These seven categories of the people are the abode of grief, miserable to watch. The King, who gets easily raged, is merciless and has the nature of the fire.  The fire destroys whoever gets closer to it, knowingly or unknowingly.

The person who keeps silent remains unskilled and the person who speaks a lot remains ‘chatter’. The person who stands closer considered fearless, and the person stands far are often treated as cowards, the person with endurance is considered as fearful, and the inpatient remains courageous. The servant who relentlessly serves the Master falls under sharp criticism, the Sevadharmam is an extremely difficult task often undergoes razor-sharp criticism, and cannot be understood even for the Yogis. An unwise King honors the wicked and deceitful people in the assembly, and offer a great position to them, he opposes all the righteous deeds, and give an abundance of supports to immoral deeds, he does not keep count of his mistakes or does not even remember them, these type of King has attained a wealth of the Kingdom with mere luck which he is not deserved, he never respects people who should be treated with great admiration. Therefore, people who live in the association of this kind of a King cannot live a happy or peaceful life.

In this verse, the poet speaks about the relationship of a Dhurjjana and Sajjana which has fleeting nature.  The association/friendship with the Dhurjjana/wicked and Sajjana/virtuous is like the nature of the shadow, it would be pleasurable and lengthy/ stretchy in the beginning, and then it would lessen, it won’t be consistent, therefore it is worthless. The relationship with these two kinds of people never be successful, it would bring endless miseries. Surprisingly, these kinds of relationships will not last for long, it would break involuntarily.  The Sajjanas are like fishes and deer, the fishes in the pond that depends on the water and air, and the deer that depends on the grass to wave off its hunger. The Durjjanas are like tribal hunters and fishermen; they hunt animals to wave off their hunger, these kinds of people remains enemies to all. Therefore the relationship with the Dhurjjana and Sajjana will not last forever.

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham– Arththa Padhdhathi

Neethi Shathakam – Sri Bharthruhari Virachitham

Chapter – 4 – Arththa Padhdhathi

Oh! Jeeva, I shall describe the nature of the people who chase after the wealth and worldly matters with the false notions that, let the differences in the caste and creed disappear in the Rasathala, let all those Guna and Ganas/virtues and moralities disappear below the Pathaloka, let the disciplines descend from the Mountains to Earth, let the virtuous and noble souls burn into ashes, let the enemies face a terrible death by the hard-hit of lightning, let me have all those wealth, fame, richness, possessions, companions, families, and happiness. Oh! Jeeva, the excessive interest in worldly matters and bondage would hurl the Jeeva into endless miseries, and force them to believe the virtues as Trina.

Usually, the noble souls who possess immense wealth, belongs to the higher clan are intelligent, will have a lot of admiration and respect from the society and well known for their virtues, must be excellent in speech, and remain respectful in the society. All those virtues, fame, intelligence, virtues, humility, simplicity, depending on the size of the wealth. Oh! Jeeva, the association of the wicked minister would bring destruction to a Kinga, excessive interest in the worldly matters /Bhoga would destroy an ascetic,  superfluous love and care of the child would destroy its virtue, Bhramin without the knowledge in the Veda would meet his destruction, wicked son bring destruction to the entire clan, the association with the deceitful people would bring destruction to morality, the interest in intoxicating drinks would bring shame to the individual, and the wealth utilized for charities without proper thought would harm the wealth.

Usually, the wealth meets three fates, either it may go to the noble souls/ascetics for Punyakarma, or it may be used for the comforts of the luxuries of the person who owned it, or it meets ruin without the usage of it. The diamond that gets rubbed to the sharp surface would get polished, the warrior who achieved victory in the battlefield and wounded badly would achieve the greatest honor, the male elephant lived a majestically serving the society and meets its latter years of age with dignity, the river once attractive and served the people with its brimming water would be admired always, even though that has little water flow due to the autumn season, the crescent moon gets all the admiration on the day of Purnima, a young woman who have undergone physical abuses strive hard to build her life with self-respect, the rich people who have lost wealth serving the poor and needy will be remembered and respected always, in this way all those noble souls shine in their own ways.

The poor Jeeva depends on the barley grains during the years of poverty dearly would love the Earth to wave off its hunger, once he attained wealth abandons the Earth and treats it as grass. The size of the wealth decides the approach of an individual to the things and the people surrounded. Oh! Rajan, if you want to milk the cow-like the Earth, takes care of your subjects as the calves. If the subjects of the Kingdom are well treated, protected, and safe-guarded, the Earth would definitely provide an abundance of natural wealth. Therefore, the country where the people are treated fairly would become the wealthiest and developed as well. Oh! Rajan, the Rajaneethi is like a prostitute, it may utter truth, sometimes lies, uses harsh words, sometimes words of promising, unpleasant, and kind, it is greedy of wealth, it provides charity, it is highly expensive, and represents richness, etc. Oh! Rajan, listen to me carefully,  a King should be wise, capable to impose law on his subjects, should have admiration from his people, should protect the twice-born/Bhramin, should provide an abundance of charities, should have thorough experience and knowledge in Rajaneethi, should be capable to protect its people as well. If the King does not possess the above virtues, what’s the use of his service to the Kingdom? Therefore the King should have the Shadgunas rule a Kingdom wisely.

Oh! Jeeva, why you chase after the wealth with your limited knowledge? The wealth of the Jeeva is predestined by Lord Bhrama, therefore, if a person strives hard in the desert which is lack of water to quench thirst, he would achieve the wealth which was already destined to him, definitely not more than that. Even if he approaches Mount Sumeru which is the storehouse of gold and minerals with greed, the funniest part is that he cannot achieve more than that was destined to him. Therefore be courageous and hopeful, do not be jealous of other’s wealth and engage in the wicked deeds. Oh! Jeeva, the vessel could carry only the water of its size, be it from the ocean or the well.
