Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The impurities of the mind such as jealousy, ego, pride, anger, lust, and desire would throw the Jeeva into constant grief and agony

Chapter – 173-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The impurities of the mind such as jealousy, ego, pride, anger, lust, and desire would throw the Jeeva into constant grief and agony

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Brijanath/Lord of Vraja, what would be my fate? I have not practiced devotion or worship of your lotus feet, I haven’t taken up austerities, vows, celibacy, non-violence, truthfulness, self-control, Astheyam, Shama, Dhama, Dhanam, Dhaya, Dhyanam, etc. I have not sung in praise of your glories or listened to your glorious legends, I have not taken shelter at your lotus feet, I have driven afar from your meditation and contemplation while chasing after the worldly matters of fleeting nature. Oh! Prabho, I have wasted my entire life, and the three important phases of childhood, adulthood and youthful chasing after the material and physical pleasures of infinite sound, appearance, touch, smell, and passion of impermanent nature, I was drenched in lust, desire, ego, pride, jealousy, Ahamkara and Mamakara that shoved me into constant grief and agony. Oh! Prabho, kindly oversee my sins, and liberate me from the grief and sufferings of worldly existence, Oh! Prabho, kindly allow me to consume your leftover Prasadha/offerings, and constantly engage in the selfless service at your lotus feet.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The recitation of Sri Ramanama is significant in the Kali era

Chapter – 172-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The recitation of Sri Ramanama is significant in the Kali era

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, how could you liberate me from the sufferings of worldly existence? I am reluctant to leave the chase for physical and material pleasures, I am a grave sinner by words, mind, and deed. My intellect is unwilling to leave the interest in worldly matters of possession, richness, fame, money, children, wife, companion, and relatives of fleeting nature. My day and nights are spent for the prosperity and fame of my clan and family. Oh! Prabho, my sins are countless, if Lord Ganesha makes an effort to write down the list of my sins, using the Prithvi/earth as paper, Kalpavruksha/wish-fulfilling tree as the pen, and ocean water as ink, I fear he could not complete it. Oh! Prabho, you have liberated Gajendra, the elephant that took great pleasure in its herds, finally, it was caught on the leg by the crocodile in the pond made several attempts to release was failed, ultimately it was left alone by the family, children, wife, companions.  Oh! Prabho, you have liberated Ganika, the prostitute who was aged, abandoned by the crowd, finally, she took great care of a parrot brought from the house of a devotee of Lord Hari, mere listening to the Harinama from the parrot, she has attained liberation from the worldly existence. Oh! Prabho, the twice-born/Brahmin Ajamila was got attracted to a prostitute in the forest while he was collecting Samith/dried and brittle wooden sticks used for the fire sacrifice. He forgot his family, and aged parents and started living with the prostitute for several years, the couple had children, the youngest one was named ‘Narayana’ who was too fond of Ajamila. At the death bed, Ajamila cried out calling for the youngest son Narayana and got liberated from the clutches of emissaries of Yama. Oh! Prabho, I have committed heinous crimes that cannot be compared to Ajamila, Gajendra, and Ganika.  The Lord Chithraguptha would get tired of counting my sins, the illustrious sages and Maharishi Brighu would get disappointed listening to the list of Aparadha/sins, and the Lord Yama would get annoyed listening to it and wouldn’t let me live in hell too. Oh! Kripanidhan,/merciful, you are the purifier of souls, your sacred names are capable to liberate the Jeeva from the sufferings of worldly existence, fear of death, Thapathraya, and repeated births. Oh! Prabho, after listening to your endless glories I have gained the courage that I would get rid of impurities of the mind, sufferings of worldly existence, and repeated births by mere chanting your sacred names, along with your compassionate grace.”

Chapter – 171-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The supreme Bhramam/Lord Sri Hari resides as a soul in the Jeeva is the knower of All

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, you are Pathithapavan/savior of distressed, alas! I am a grave sinner, kindly overlook my sins and protect me from the grief and sufferings of worldly existence, so that you can protect the promises to your devotees. Oh! Prabho, I have taken several births in different yonis/womb, each time I have committed various sins with my tongue that was constantly used for gossips, I haven’t uttered a single name of you with the tongue. Oh! Prabho, I am a bundle of grave sins, I have disrespected santh, Mahathma, noble souls, and preceptors, I was always chasing after material and physical pleasures of infinite sound, touch, passion, appearance, and smell, alas! I haven’t been satisfied yet. Oh! Prabho, I have driven afar from you, and I was wandering aimlessly begging before the wicked and greedy. A blind cannot take help from blind, I did it. I was associated with deceitful and selfish people and turned out a wicked and morally wrong. Oh! Prabho, I was not fortunate, the noble people seek the association of Santh, and Mahathma who have completely renounced the worldly matters of fleeting nature, such as possession, money, wealth, fame, children, companion, wife, relative etc., and have no interest in worldly matters. Oh! Kamalalochan/who has beautiful eyes resembles lotus flower petals, Oh! Karunamaya/merciful, you are that supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, you are the knower of all, you are omniscient, omnipresent and omnipotent, Oh! Prabho, kindly listen to my prayers, I am a grave sinner, wicked and merciless, I have no one to protect other than you.”

Chapter – 170-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The pitiable state of later years of age of human

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Dheenanath/protector of distressed people, now it’s your turn to save me from the sufferings and grief of worldly existence, you have promised to your devotees to protect them from all the troubles, hence kindly keep up your promise alive. Oh! Prabho, I have wasted beautiful childhood days in various amusements, therefore I did not practice meditation or devotion at your lotus feet. Unfortunately, I have wasted my youthful days too, I have been chasing after worldly matters of physical and material pleasure, and in this way I have driven afar from you. Oh! Prabho, I have reached the later years of age, my limbs are not co-operating with the mind, I have become fragile, my movements are restricted, the senses are not working like before, I have become a burden for others and helpless, now I have understood the concept of Bhakthi/devotion, Gnana/wisdom, and Vairagya/renunciation, but it is too late for me to take up any austerities, vows, Shama, Dhama, Sathyam, Shaucham, Dhaya, Dhanam, Dhyanam, Bramacharya, Swadhyaya, etc. hence I am crying out for help. Oh! Prabho, my children, wife, companions, and relatives have abandoned me due to my aging, and illnesses. Oh! Prabho, even the skin started shrinking, I have become deaf, my feet are unsteady, eyes are overflowing with tears of grief and guilt, my hairs have gone grey and left me bald-headed, my throat is obstructed with the mucus, I cannot breathe at ease or speak, I am restless day and night, sadly my desires or illusion which are the source of grief is not leaving me. Oh! Prabho, there is no one who can save me from the grief and suffering of worldly existence, Oh! Karunasagara/ocean of mercy, you are the savior of distressed and desolate, kindly protect me.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj – Sri Sur – Vinaya – Pathrika – The kindness and compassion of Lord Sri Hari

Chapter – 169-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – The kindness and compassion of Lord Sri Hari

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Madhav, Oh! Karunamaya/mericiful, Oh! Keshava, you would easily forgive the thousands of sins of your devotees, you are too kind and compassionate to your devotees, you won’t pay attention to the mistakes of your devotees, like the unborn child that kicks inside the womb of mothers, even though mothers undergo unbearable pain while giving birth to a child, she won’t shed tears of pain, or never show hatred to the newborn, she would affectionately hold the baby close to her chest and nurture the child with great care and love. Oh! Prabho, you are too kind to your devotees, like the sandal tree that spread coolness as well as fragrance, even if it was cut down by the wicked and greedy, it won’t stop spreading its coolness and fragrances. Oh! Prabho, you are like the Prithvi/mother Earth, the farmers do plow, level, and manure the fields before sowing the seeds, they create tiny water courses to provide enough water to the crops, and finally, the compassionate mother Earth bearing heat and cold provides excellent crops to the farmers. At times, the tongue gets hurt by the teeth, but it does not stop providing the different tastes of the meal. Oh! Dhayanidhi, Oh! Prabho, you are the cause for all the causes, Oh! Prabho, I am helpless, worn out of grief and sorrows of worldly existence, I am ashamed as well as afraid of the sins committed by words, deeds, and mind. Oh! Prabho, I have already surrendered at your lotus feet, kindly protect me from the Kalikalaroopi/dreadful Kali era/ mouth of death resembling the giant crocodile, kindly protect me from the Thapathraya/three kinds of grief, 1) grief from illnesses, aging, fear of death, and separation from beloved ones and wealth 2) grief from the attachment to possession, wealth, richness, money, fame, children, wife, companion and relatives 3) grief from the natural calamities, famine, drought, flood, epidemic, wildfire, etc. Oh! Prabho, kindly protect me from the repeated births.”

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, you have done injustice to me, Oh! Prabho, you have given me the precious and rarest birth as a human to observe righteousness, truthfulness, celibacy, non-violence, kindness, compassion, self-control, Shama, Dhama, Sathyam, Dhaya, Dhanam, Dhyanam, etc. I am a grave sinner, have wasted my whole life, and did not use the important three phases of life childhood, adulthood, and youthfulness to achieve the fruitfulness of life. Oh! Prabho, you protected me while I was hanging upside down, suffering from extreme heat and cold in the dark tiny space in my mother’s womb/Garbhavasa Dhukham. Oh! Prabho, you did not put my delicate body burn in the Jadaragni/the fire that burns the food consumed, you have given me beautiful limbs that resemble precious yellow metal. Oh! Prabho, I have committed various sins chasing after the material and physical pleasures of infinite sounds, appearance, touch, passion, and smell, I have been chasing after worldly matters from the day of birth, hence finding no way out of grief and suffering. Oh! Prabho, I am a sinner, but you are the protector of distress and desolate people, you have promised to your devotees to protect them from the grief and suffering, hence kindly protect those vows.”

Chapter – 167-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – All the material matters have impermanent nature, either they will leave or have to leave them

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Prabho, I have been drenched in illusion, hence I have considered all those worldly matters of wealth, possession, money, richness, fame, children, wife, relatives, and companion as mine and permanent. Alas! it was neither mine nor permanent, all those worldly matters were either they abandoned me or I had to abandon them. Oh! Dear Lord, Oh! Sri Hari, my excessive interest in worldly matters has driven me afar from you, so I am completely unaware of your kindness and compassion. Oh! Prabho, I have been visiting sacred places, forgetting your all-pervasiveness, I was ignorant, I forgot your omnipresence. Oh! Prabho, you are the Lord of the Universe and its living and non-living things, you are beyond the description of word, mind, and deed, I forgot your all-pervasive nature. Oh! Chapter – 166-  Sur -Vinaya – Pathrika – Owls do not value the brightness of the Sun like the ignorant does not know the significance of the practice of devotion

Sri Surdas Maharaj speaks “Oh! Dear Lord, Oh! Gopala, I am ignorant, hence I do not understand your kindness and compassion to your devotees who are surrendered at your lotus feet. Oh! Prabho, you are all-pervasive supreme Bhramam resides as a soul in the Jeeva, I did not realize the ‘self’, even after obtaining the precious Harinamaroopi Mahamani which is the source of happiness and welfare I did not understand the auspiciousness of the same like the owl does not know the value of brightness of the Sun which is the source of living beings on the Earth, likewise, the eye illness cannot be visible for the eyes. Oh! Prabho, I have been soaked in lust, desire, ego, pride, jealousy, anger, Ahamkara, and Mamakara, which made me chase after the unworthy physical and material matters of fleeting nature, eventually driving myself miserable and disappointed. Oh! Prabho, I am unfortunate, ignorant, and dull-minded I have been drenched in the toxic poison of worldly matters of possession, richness, wealth, money, children, wife, companion, and relatives; hence I have not achieved the Sri Harinamaroopi Mahamani which is the sole wealth of Lord Shankara, beloved of Santh, Mahathma, noble souls, and the Veda and Puranas highly describes the endless glories of it.”
