Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12 Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable through the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.



Sutha speaks “The above are the thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahakala , whoever recites or listens to it would be purified from all kinds of sins, whoever reads or listens to it for a week would be blessed with virtuous offspring, whoever reads or listens to it for two weeks would conquer the world, whoever reads or listens to it for three weeks would be blessed with abundance of wealth and grains and  meritorious reward, whoever recites the glorious thousands of sacred names of Mahakala sitting under the Vadavriksha/peepal, would become true ascetic/sage, whoever recites or listens the sacred names of Mahakala for three weeks and thrice a day would be blessed with all  kinds of Siddhis/supernatural powers, whoever recites or listen the sacred verses of Mahakala sitting under Ashwaththa or Tulsi or on the banks of river or pond or shrines of Hari or Hara,  and following austerities would get all their desires fulfilled,  whoever reads or listens sitting under Ashwaththa or Vadavruksha, or on the banks of sacred rivers or ponds would be enriched with supreme wisdom and knowledge, whoever reads or listens to these sacred names of Mahakala with utmost sincerity  and devotion would attain all that they desired, remembrance of Lord Mahakala would bring abundance of pieties,  Oh! Mortals, listening and reading these sacred thousands of names of Mahakala would fulfill all your desires, whoever reads or listens to these sacred names of Mahakala for hundred times would attain innumerable merits, and make it possible things which are difficult to accomplish, or illness which are incurable or  tasks which are difficult to be conquered or matters difficult to be reconciled, whoever reads or listens to these sacred glorious names of Mahakala during the auspicious days of Shivarathri following strict fast and austerities, and recites these sacred verses hundreds of times during the mid night hours would get all their desires fulfilled, whoever reads or listens to these sacred names of Mahakala for thousands of times sitting under Ashwaththa or on the banks of sacred river would attain Bhukthi/happiness/pleasures and Mukthi/liberation from repeated births in this era of Kaliyuga, whoever reads or listens these sacred names of Mahakala during performance of ceremonial rite or homage to ancestors, would get purified and attain all kinds of Siddhis, whoever reads or listens the sacred names of Mahakala would get back their lost Kingdom and glories, childless would bear virtuous offspring, person afflicted with leprosy would be blessed with healthiest body, whoever reads or listens to these sacred names of Mahakala would remain beloved of Lord Mahakala and with his grace the worshiper would attain all kinds of Siddhis, I  repeatedly affirms that  it is a  real blessing during the evil effects of Kali era, Oh! Vipra, reading or listening to these sacred names of Mahakala would bring the piousness of bathing in Koditheertha/thousands of million sacred rivers, dip in the Rudrasaras/Rudratheertha which would remove the most incurable leprosy, whoever reads  residing in Siddhapeeda would conquer the Universe, whoever reads sitting on the  banks of sacred Kshipra would attain abundance of wealth and grains, whoever reads or listens during the hours of dawn, noon and dusk would overpower their enemies, whoever reads or listens these sacred names of Mahakala in the shrine of Bhairava would be relieved from accidental death or untimely death, virtuous who reads sitting under the shade of Vadavruksha  would be blessed with virtuous offspring of long life, reading thousands of sacred names of Mahakala during the hours of dusk would  be relieved from the evil spirits, whoever reads or listens sitting near the Gayakoopa/Gayatheertha would get their ancestors greatly pleased, whoever reads or listens sitting on the river banks Gomathi would attain the abode of Lord Vishnu, whoever reads or listens residing in Angapatha would be relieved from all kinds of sins, whoever reads or listening in residing Gadgathasangamam/indistinguishable during the hours of dusk would be benefitted with Gadga Siddhi, whoever reads or listens the sacred names of Mahakala on Yamathadaga/pond would be relieved from the fear of death, whoever reads or listens the sacred names of Mahakala on Navanadhi/new rivers would be bless with highest fortune, whoever reads in front of Yogis would be free from Mahamari/incurable diseases, it should be recited with sons and grandsons  sitting close to the aged, while reading the sacred names of Mahakala, the place should be lit with earthen lamp and after completion of recitation the Bhramin should be served with food, number of Bhramins served may vary from eleven or five or three or one, whoever yearn to attain all kinds of Siddhis should perform the act of charity, whoever reads or listens to the glorious thousands of names of Lord Mahakala with utmost faith and devotion,  or remembering the splendor of Lord Mahakala and strictly following the austerities, would be blessed with abundance of auspiciousness.

I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Mahadeva who is personified as Mahakala, he is decked in serpents all over his body, he is the Lord of realms of serpents, he is decked in serpent as jewels, he is decorated with the serpent as Yajjopaveetha/sacred thread across the chest, he is the Lord of serpents, he is the protector of serpents,  he is worshiped by the serpents, he is Naravara/flawless,  he is decked in marvelous anklets, he is Chandeshvara, he is Nagadhipa/commander of serpents,  he is beloved of  blue waters of sacred Ganga on his matted hair locks, he is the Lord of sacred Ganga, he is Prithukesha/who represents ancestors and Prayagesha/Lord of sacred land of Prayaga as well, he is Paththanesha/Lord of sacred cities and he is Parashara/destroys sins of the worshiper as well, he is Pushpadhantheshvara, he represents morality, he is Pingaleshvara/fire/golden colored, he represents ancestors, he is the Lord of spirits, he is Pannagesha/Lord of serpents, he is Pashupathishvara/Lord of animals, he is beloved of all, he is worshiped by Parvathi, he symbolizes Prana/soul, he is the Lord of Prana, he is the destroyer of sins of worshiper, he is beloved consort of Parvathi, he dwells as Prana in living beings, he dwells as Prana, he is flawless who represents sacred scriptures, he symbolizes passion, he is omniscient, he is the Lord of Goddess Parvathi, he symbolizes sacred rivers and he has the luster of blue lotus flower, he is the Lord of sacred rivers, he is the provider of virtuous offspring and piousness to worshiper,  he is flawless, his eyes has the resemblance to lotus flower petals, he is smeared in the pollen of lotus flower, he is decorated with lotus flower, he is attired in directions as garments, he is decorated with the serpents, he is the Lord of Phani/serpents, he consumes unique kind of meal, he has the luster of crystals, he is the provider of  fruits of auspicious deeds, he is the Lord of Bhadhri/full moon, he is powerful, he consumes plentiful, he is venerated by Balakhilyas, he has child like form, he represents Bhramam, he is worshiped by Bhramins who follow strict practices in acquiring knowledge of Veda and supreme Bhramam, he represents Bhramin and  Lord Bhrama, he is supreme Bhramam, he is the knower of Bhramam, he is beloved of Bhramins, he is embodied as supreme Bhramam, he is the protector of Bhramins, he is personified as supreme Bhramam, he is the Lord of Bhrama, he is delightful in the presence of Bhramins, he destroys the wicked who commit Bhramahathya/killing of Bhramin, he is Bhrama who is worshiped by Bhramins, he is the Lord of spirit, he is the protector of spirit, he is smeared in sacred ashes all over his body, he has colossal form and he is valorous as well, he destroys the worldly bondage of worshiper, he is Bhairava who destroys fears in the worshiper, he is gracious, he is supreme Lord who is the source of Universe, he is the Lord of the Universe, he represents highest peaks, he symbolizes prosperity, he is Lord of expressiveness, he is Bhujangesha and Bhaskara as well, he is personified as Bhindhipala/expert in archery/catapult, he dwells as Prana in living beings, he destroys fear, he is Bhanu/Lord Surya, he promotes the welfare of Universe and its living beings, he is the provider of liberation from repeated births.  The above are the thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahakala, May Lord Mahakala bless us.

I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Mahadeva who is personified as Mahakala, he is Lord of Lords, he is the provider of abundance of boons to worshiper, he is the annihilator of demons, he is Dhineshvara/Lord of Surya/day, he is compassionate, he disperse the fruit of Karma, he works for the welfare of the deities and protects them,  he is Dhivaspathi/Lord Surya, he represents Dhamodhara, he is attired in minimum clothes, he bathe in milk and very fond of butter milk, he represents Devaraja/Lord Indra, he is Lord of Surya/sky/heaven, he is supreme deity, he is beloved of all deities, he is Devadeva, he symbolizes charity, he is fond of Dhoorvadhala, he is eternal , he is attired all directions/sky as clothes, he is embodied as Earth, he is Digambara who is the destroyer of poverty of worshiper, he is closest companion of distressed people, he is difficult to be propitiated, he destroys perils and wicked people, he is son in law of Dhakshaprajapthi, he crushed the pride of Dhakshaprajapathi and inflicted sorrow, he is supreme Lord, he eradicates pairs of sorrows, he is pure and irresistible, he is Dhurdhareshvara/unstoppable, he represents charity and provider of abundance boons, he is Dhivakara who is divine and illuminates the whole Universe with his radiance, he destroys deceitfulness, he is Dhakshajapathi/ Lord of Durga, he is Dheepthiman who has supreme brilliance,  he is wielded in bow, he carries bow and arrows, he is valorous, he symbolizes grains, and he is the provider of abundance of grains to worshiper, he symbolizes righteousness, he is supreme Lord embodied as Dharma, he is auspicious, he establishes the law and order, he strictly follows righteousness, he is Dhaneshvara/Lord of wealth and provider of wealth to worshiper, he is Dhoorjadi who showers  prosperity on unfortunate, he is pious and he symbolizes wealth, he symbolizes Dharmaraja/Lord of righteousness, he is Dhanadhara/Lord of wealth, he is Dharadhara/embodied as Earth and mountains, he is the Lord of Dhara/Dharapathi, he is profound in Dhanurvidhya/art of archery, he is divine smeared in dust particles, he represents bow and he is wielded in bow and arrow, he is consort of Dhara/Dharanatha, he is the commander of Earth/Dharadheesha, he symbolizes wealth, he is the provider of abundance of wealth to worshiper, he symbolizes righteousness, he reinstates and protects the righteousness on Earth, he is Dhanakara/Lord of wealth and provider of wealth, he represents Narmada who causes immense bliss, he originated from the sacred river Narmada, he is the Lord of happiness and pleasure/Narmadhesha, he is Nripeshvara who is  Lord of Kings.
