Shiva
Gitimala was composed by Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi ( 62nd Seer of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peedam),
it consists of 20 enthralling verses known as Ashtapadi praising the
pleasurable moments of Lord Ekamreshwarar and Goddess Sri Kamakshi. This beautiful composition portraits
the desperation, devotion and dedication, of individual soul/Jeevathma, attain
union with the Supreme soul/Paramathma in order to achieve eternal bliss. Shiva Ashtapadi/Shiva Gitimala begins
with the veneration of Lord Ganesha. The
entire verses illustrate the miserable state of separation of Goddess Parvathi
from Lord Shiva. Goddess
Sri Parvati underwent severe penance on the river banks of Kampa in order to
unite with the Lord Shiva. The
divine couple undergoes unbearable pain of separation; Lord Shiva came down to
Earth and resides under a mango tree where Goddess Sri Parvati undertakes
penance was observed by faithful companion of Goddess and was duly
informed. The state of
remorseful, desertion, guilt and the messages exchanged through the
companion of Godess Sri Parvati etc.. are beautifully depicted in the
Ashtapadi. Ultimately Lord
Shiva appears before Goddess Sri Parvati and apologizes profusely, after an
initial harshness between the couple and blissfully unites.
In this
verse, Sri Chandrasekharendra Yathi describes the desperation of Goddess Sri
Parvati out of separation from her consort Lord Shiva; further she spoke to her
faithful companion in utter desolation about the amorous sport of Lord with
young maiden who has no shelter in the forest on the river banks of
Kampa. Her enthralling feet
surpasses the beauty of red lotuses that was devoured by Lord; she was
emaciated by the cupid flower arrows of Lord Manmatha. Lord Shiva decorates her beautiful
long curly hair with the fresh alluring flowers of various fragrances that was
surrounded honey bees. Her
unparalleled beauty and physical features attracted him frenziedly; he applies
musk on her body and raised bosom which devour his intellect, he decorates her
with jewels and flower buds. Her
beautiful face with radiant smile, shining teeth and attractive lips were
arrested Him, resulted in drawing strange pictures on her face with the sandal
paste. Lord Shiva engrossed
in the riveting beauty of the young maiden in the moonlight, her golden colored
clothes slipped off from its place which revealed the beauty of her thin waist
decorated with finest jewels. Lord Shiva engaged in the amorous
sport with the young maiden who has raised bosom, devouring the sweet scented
nectar from her lips, finding immense pleasure in her lovely face and gives out
a smile in forlorn, eventually the couple engaged in a passionate sport in the
moon light and gentle breeze.
The above
verses of Sri Chandrasekharendra Yativara, ardent devotee of Lord Shiva would
dispel the dreadful sins of His devotees.
Further
Goddess Sri Parvati reveals her anxiety surmounted by despair and
uncontrollable desire for Lord Shiva to her faithful companion, worries about
the absence of Lord Shiva; ultimately she pacifies herself with the promising
thoughts about Lord’s return and taking shelter in her.
