Sri Yamunashtakam by Sri Vallabhacharya – Lyrics & meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

I shall prostrate before the sacred river Yamuna ! who is the provider of all the auspiciousness, the widespread sands on the river banks shines like the lotus feet of Lord Murari, fresh alluring flowers on the woods close to the river banks makes her waters aromatic, she is venerated by Sura and Asuras as well, she is capable to provide all the auspiciousness to whoever remember her glories.  She dwells on the peak of Kalindhigiri, and descends gracefully through the peaks with waters streaming down elegantly; she enhances amorous sport of Lord Mukunda, Victory to Yamuna!  Who is Daughter of Lord Surya.   I shall prostrate before the sacred river Yamuna! who is most beloved to Lord Krishna, she descended to earth for the purification of the Universe, parrots, peacocks and swans relentlessly serves her streaming waters like the cowherds who fervently served their beloved Lord Krishna, her waves are gorgeous hands which is decked in magnificent sand bed as bangles and the river bank is her attractive hip.  She has endless virtues, she is venerated by Lord Shiva, Lord Bhrama and deities, she has the shade of dark clouds, she fulfilled the wishes of Dhruva and Sage Parasara, she is situated on the sacred lands of Mathura which is surrounded by cow herds, and she is the manifestation of compassion, Oh! Yamuna, kindly blesses us with eternal happiness.  Oh! Padmaja, you are most desirable to Lord Murari, your confluence with other sacred rivers multiplied its auspiciousness, you are resembles to Kamalaja, who is the consort of Lord Hari, Oh! Kalindi you are most beloved to Lord Hari, hence I shall pray for your eternal presence in my heart.  I shall prostrate before the sacred river Yamuna!  Your myths are marvelous, and therefore whoever consumes your sacred waters would remain your most beloved and freed from the hellish tortures of Lord Yama.   Oh! Yamuna, even a sinner would remain purified after consuming your sacred waters, like cowherds to Lord Krishna, Oh! Yamopi Bhagini/sister of Lord Yama, how could Lord Yama harm your children after consuming your sacred waters?  Oh! Mukundapriye, I have realized a great transformation in me before your divine presence, therefore it will not be difficult to attain the grace of Lord Muraripu as well, and I shall praise your glories of confluence with other sacred rivers which is eulogized by the whole Universe.  Oh! Yamuna, who is beloved to Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi, whoever venerates you and Lord Hari would be blessed with happiness and liberation from the cycles of birth and death, your glorious myth is eternal, your sacred waters represents the perspiration of cowherds while their glorious amorous sport with Lord Krishna.

Oh! Yamuna/Surasuthe, whoever recites or listens to your glorious verses would be free from grief and miseries, and remain in eternal bliss with Lord Mukunda.  Whoever recites or listens to your magnificent verses would remain blessed with virtues and Lord Murari will be pleased to them.  Thus ends the glorious verses of Sri Vallabhacharya praising the sacred river Yamuna.
