Sri Chandi Kavacham – Sri Varaha Puranam – Lyrics and meanings

The sacred armor of Goddess Sri Chandi was composed by Bhrama Rishi, it has Anushtup as Chandhass, presiding deity is Devi Chamunda, and Anganyasokthamatha as Beejam, Dhigbandham as Devatha, and it is recited to please Sri Jagadamba.


Markandeya speaks “ Oh! Pithamaha, kindly narrate the highly confidential and propitious hymn which is capable to protect all the living beings in the Universe.”



Bhrama speaks “Oh! Vipra, I shall narrate the sacred armor of Goddess Sri Chandi which is highly confidential and promising to the living beings, Oh! Mahamune, listen to me carefully.  I shall meditate upon Navadurga, firstly Shailaputhri/daughter of Mount Himavan, secondly Bhramacharini/undertakes extreme penances and austerities, thirdly Chandhraganda/adorned in crescent moon, fourthly Kooshmanda/embodied as Universe, fifthly Skandhamatha/mother of Lord Skandha, sixth Kathyayani/daughter of Sage Kathyayana, seventh Kalarathri/dark hours of the night, eighth Mahagauri/fair complexioned, and  ninth Siddhidhathri/symbolizes Siddha, whoever recites these sacred names of Navadurga  with intense faith and devotion would remain protected from fire and enemies, while travelling, miseries and sorrows, intense fear and anxieties, and worshiper would be blessed with Siddhis.  She is Chamunda who is mounted on corpse, she is Varahi who is mounted on Mahisha, she is Aindhri who is mounted on elephant, she is Vaishnavi who is mounted on King of birds, she is Maheshvari who is mounted on Vrishabha, she is Kaumari who is mounted on peacock, she is Bhrami who is seated on swan, adorned in various precious ornaments and gem decorated ornaments all over the body, she is lustrous,  she is Devi who is fierce, wielded in  Shankham, Chakram, Gadha, shakthi, Hala, Musala, Khedakam, Thomaram, Parashu, Pasham, Kuntham, Thrishoolam, Sharngam, etc..  in order to destroy the Dhaithyas and protect the destitute and desolate people who are surrendered at her lotus feet, she has wielded in various weapons in order to protect the Devas from the enemies, she is Mahabala/mighty Goddess, Mahothsaha/extremely enthusiastic, and she eradicates extreme fears and anxieities, Oh! Devi, kindly protect us from the enemies, she inflicts intense fear in enemies, Oh! Aindhri ,kindly protect me from the east Oh! Agnidevatha, kindly protect me from south-east, Oh! Varahi, kindly protect me from the right, Oh! Khadgadharini kindly protect me from  south-west, Oh! Varuni kindly protect me from the west, Oh! Mrigavahini kindly protect me from north-west, Oh! Kauberi kindly protect me from the north, Oh! Shooladharini kindly protect me from north-east, Oh! Bhramani kindly protect me from the above, Oh! Vaishnavi kindly protect me from the below, Oh! Chamunda who carries corpse, kindly protect me from ten directions, Oh! Jaya, kindly protect me from forefront, Oh! Vijaya, kindly protect me from the backward, Oh! Makudeshvari, kindly protect my bile, Oh! Padmavathi, kindly protect my cells, Oh! Choodamani, kindly protect phlegm, Oh! Jwalamukhi kindly protect the sparkling on the nails, Oh! Abhedhya kindly protect all the joints, Oh! Kindly protect the sperm, Oh! Cchathreshvari kindly protect my shadow, Oh! Dharmacharini, kindly protect my intellect, mind, ego, soul, five vital airs, etc.. Oh! Lakshmi kindly provide eternal fame and admiration, Oh! Vaishnavi, kindly protect me always, Oh! Indhrani, kindly protect my Gothra, Oh! Chandike, kindly protect my cattle, Oh! Mahalakshmi, kindly protect my offspring, Oh! Bhairavi, kindly protect my companion/wedded husband or wife, Oh! Kshemakari, kindly protect me from all the paths I have to move around, Oh! Vijaya, kindly protect me from everywhere,  Oh! Jayanthi,  who is the destroyer of sins,  I am helpless without any protective shield, kindly protect me.  Whoever reads or listens or wear the sacred armor of Goddess Chandi would remain successful in all endeavors, worshiper would get fulfilled all that desired, he/she would be blessed with all kinds of wealth and auspiciousness on the Earth,  remains fearless and successful in battle field and  remains unconquerable, he/she would be honored in the three worlds with the grace of the sacred armor of Goddess Chandi, these are highly propitious hymns which is not easily accessible even for the deities, whoever reads or listens to it during the hours of dawn, noon and dusk with utmost faith and devotion would remain victorious, worshiper would be blessed with long life of hundred years, he/she will be protected from accidental and untimely death and all kinds of critical illnesses.  The sacred armor of Goddess Chandi would eradicate all the evil effects caused by the living things that are visible or invisible from Earth, sky, and water,  it eradicates troubles from Sahaja, Kulaja, Mala, Shakini, Dakini, Yaksha, Gandharva, Rakshasa, Bhootha, Pishacha and the afflictions caused by planets etc… worshiper would attain supreme intellect, wisdom, knowledge, and eternal fame.  It is customary to read Sapthashathi before the commencement of sacred armor of Goddess Chandi, worshiper would remain blessed with  Puthra/sons and daughters and Pauthra/grandchildren, ultimately liberation from the repeated births with  the grace of Mahamaya  which is difficult to attain even for the deities.”
