Nirvana Dhashakam by Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

|| Shankara ||

I am not a part of Bhoomi/Earth, or Thoyam/water, or Agni/Thejas, or Vayur/air or sensory organs or do not belong to any of these groups but I shall remain an aspect of Lord Shiva even though all those perishable things dissolves in the state of deep sleep.  I have no Varnam such as Bhramin, Kshthriya, Vaishya and Shudra, I have no Varnashramadharma such as Bhramacharya, Gruhastha, Vanaprastham and Sanyasa, I have no specific way of practice of Yoga or meditation, I am not  dependent to soul, I shall remain an aspect of Lord shiva when all those “I” concept disappears.  I am not Mother, or father or Universe, or Deva or Veda, or Yajjya or sacred waters, when I merge into the state of deep sleep I shall remain an aspect of Lord Shiva.  I am not a part of Sankhyam or  Shaivam or Pancharathram or Jainam or Meemamsakam, when I experience the presence of supreme soul in a state of ecstacy, I shall remain an aspect of Lord Shiva. I have no specific colors like white/Shuklam or black/Krishnam or crimson/Raktham  or yellow/Peetham, I have no specific shapes like Kubjam/bend, Hrusvam/short, Dheergam/long, I shall remain formless/Aroopam and exists in the form of a light/Jyothi, ultimately I shall remain an aspect of Lord Shiva.  I am not Shastha or Shasthram/sacred scriptures, or disciple/Shishya or Shiksha/learning, you and I are not this Prapancha/Universe/visible world, when the real sense ignores the false notion, I shall remain an aspect of Lord Shiva.  I am not a part of awareness or unconsciousness, I am not the Universe, or brilliance or important one, I shall remain the fourth one which is free from ignorance, and ultimately I shall remain an aspect of Lord Shiva.   I am not connected to the principle of up and down, inside or outside,   horizontal or vertical, east or west; I shall remain an aspect of Lord Shiva which is all pervading with various forms.  I shall remain as aspect of Lord Shiva who is different from all features of pervasive nature and has unique characteristics in this lowly world, and always remains extraordinary.  How shall I describe that it is not that one which is not the second one, unusual or usual, vacant or occupied, it has the characteristics of Advaitha philosophies but similar to Sarva Vedantha as well.
