Sri Gangashtakam by Kalidasa – Lyrics and meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

I shall prostrate before Ganga whose single touch makes the animals like snakes, horses, deer, and monkeys to attain the abode of Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu.  I shall prostrate before Jahnukanya/daughter of Sage Jahnu, whose sacred waters has the luster of crescent moon, resemblance to the brilliance of Lord Parameshwara, she is unblemished, and she is eulogized by the Sages Vashishta and various Rishis.  Whoever takes holy dip in her sacred water, whether he is sinless or wicked would attains equal honors, they would be transported in celestial vehicle to the abode of Lord Shiva which is difficult to achieve even for the Lord Indra and deities.  Lord Indra who is immersed in the sensual pleasures with the celestial Apsara Rambha, extremely proud of luxuriousness of the Indhraloka and his vicious weapon Vajrayudha, is yearning for residing in a hermitage on your river banks.  Your sacred water droplets sprinkles from the matted hair locks of Lord of Lords, and  it makes Goddess Parvathi who has immense delight to be known as the consort of Lord Shiva, creates ripples on your water with her hands, but that too won over by your powerful water current.  Oh! Jahnukanya, I shall meditate upon your sacred water current which is blended with the vermilion that washed off from the forehead of Airavatha while taking holy dip in your water, it is combined with the supreme fragrance of lotus flowers. I shall get purified and remain sinless by the touch of cool breeze that carries the dust from your sacred river banks, I shall consider and honor them as superior to the status of Lord Indhra.  I shall prostrate before Goddess Ganga whose lotus feet has the luster of the magnificent gem studded crowns of all the deities who venerates during Thrisandhya and she gracefully dwells in the matted hair locks of Lord Shiva.

Whoever recites or listens to the Gangashtakam praising the glories of Jahnukanya which was composed by Kalidasa during dawn, noon and dusk would be praised by Lord Indhra and deities ultimately attain the abode of Sri Vaikundham and would be freed from repeated births.
