Sri Durga Sthuthi: by King Yudhishtira – Lyrics and meanings

This is one of the wonderful verses praising the glories of Goddess Sri Durga by King Yudhishtira after the arrival in the marvelous city of Virat.  The supreme Goddess Sri Durga who is the safe haven of her passionate devotees, she is instigated from the womb of Yasodha at the will of Lord Narayana, she is born in the clan of Nandagopa, and she is the provider of all the auspiciousness and protector of the clan.  She destroyed the   pride of Kamsa and she is the annihilator of demons; she rose to the sky when she was whipped to the stone.  She is the sister of Vasudeva and she is decked in various precious ornaments and flower garlands, she is wielded in Gadga and Gedaka, she is personified for reducing the burden of earth, she provides piousness to people who always meditate upon Lord Shiva, she eradicates all the sins of her devotees like a cow protected from swamp. King Yudhishtira eulogized the glories of Goddess Sri Durga with various sacred hymns.


“I shall prostrate before Goddess Sri Durga who is the provider of various boons to her passionate devotees, she has dark complexion, she is youthful and follows strict austerities, she has the radiance of Lord Surya in the hours of early morning, and she has the luster of full moon.  She has four hands and four faces, she has attractive limbs, she is decked in feathers of peacock as ornaments, she dwells in Padma/lotus flower, she is the consort of Lord Narayana, she is unblemished and follows strict austerities, she has the complexion of dark clouds and has the resemblance to Sankarshana, she is wielded in Pasham, bow, wheel and various weapons, she is unblemished on Earth, she carries lotus flower and bells, she is decked in magnificent earrings that multiplies her beauty, her face has the luster of moon, she is decorated in magnificent crown on her beautiful long hair locks, her beautiful thin waste is decked in marvelous waist belt resembles to Mount Mandhara tied with the serpent, she has majestic look and manifested as young maiden to sanctify the three worlds, she is  eulogized and worshiped by Trinities, she has personified as Mahishasura Mardhini in order to protect the three worlds, she is ever pleasing and she is superior among the deities, Oh! Shivaa/consort of Lord Shiva, kindly showers your mercy on us.  Victory to Goddess Vijaya, who is the symbol of triumph, kindly provide us victory in all endeavors and provide us various boons, she dwells in the highest peak of Mount Vindhya, she is the provider of various boons to her passionate devotees who are surrendered at her lotus feet, she is personified to reduce the burden of Earth, whoever worship Goddess Sri Durga in the early hours of morning and prostrate before her would remain blessed with children and wealth.   Whoever meditates upon Goddess Sri Durga would be relieved from mountain sized miseries and sorrows, they would be protected from unfathomable sea and wilderness of the woods as well, you are the safest haven for the people while crossing the ocean or woods, Oh! Devi, you are the symbol of fame, wealth, Siddhis, wisdom and intellect, Oh! Devi, you represent dawn, dusk, state of sleep, brightness, radiance, patience and mercy.  Whoever venerates Goddess Sri Durga would be relieved from worldly bondages, desires, accidental death of offspring, destruction of wealth, severe illnesses, untimely death, fear etc…  Oh! Padmapathrakshi/Goddess who has the eyes resembles to lotus flower,  Oh! Bhakthavathsale/compassionate to her fervent devotees, I shall completely surrender to your lotus feet”.  In this way,  Pandava eulogized the glories of Goddess Sri Durga and she appeared before King Yudhishtira.


Goddess Druga spoke “ Oh! Rajan , Oh! Prabho, listen to me carefully, you will have all the success in future, Earth is relieved from the burden of Kauravas, Oh! Rajan, you will live a happy, healthy and prosperous life with your brothers.  Whoever reads or listen to these glorious verses without any pretense would be blessed with Kingdom, long life and children.  Whoever reads or listen to these sacred verses would be protected from the troubles of all the external territories, cities, wilderness of woods, unfathomable ocean and mountains, whoever remembers my glories would be blessed with my immediate presence.  Whoever reads or listens to the above sacred verses would attain success in all the endeavors.”
