Sri Bhagavathi Ashtoththarashathanama Sthothram – Lyrics and meanings

The glorious verses praising the splendor of Goddess Bhagavathi was composed by Dheergathama Rishi, it has Kakup as Chandhass, presiding deity is Bhagavathi who has incarnated as Shoolini Durga,  I shall prostrate before Durga who is wielded in powerful trident, she is worshiped by Deva and Asura as well, she is the source of happiness, she is Mahayogeshvari, I shall pronounce the sacred syllables Hum Phat and earnestly pray to Goddess Vindhyavasini, who is wielded in trident, she showers abundance of boons, she is the slayer of wicked demons, she is worshiped by Deva, Asura, and Siddhas, she is fond of battle fields.

Dhyanam –

I shall meditate upon supreme Goddess who is wielded in powerful trident,  she holds Shoola, Bana, dagger, Gadha, Chapa, Pasha in her lotus hands, she has the complexion of  dark clouds, she is adorned in magnificent crown which spread intense luster, she can be formidable, she is adorned in various ornaments all over the body, she is mounted on the back of lion, she has marvelous form with four hands, she holds Kheda, she is youthful, she is the destroyer of wicked demons, Oh! Matha, kindly eradicate our extreme fears and anxieties.


I shall prostrate before Goddess Shoolini, who has personified as Durga, she showers abundance of boons, she is Vindhyavasini who is the slayer of wicked demons, she is worshiped by Deva, Asura, and Siddhas, she is fond of battle fields, she is supreme bliss, Oh! Mahayogeshvari, I shall earnestly pray to protect us.


I shall prostrate before Goddess Bhagavathi  who is personified as Gauri/fair complexioned, she has golden color complexion too, she is the creator, preserver and destroyer of Universe and its living beings, she is the essence of Universe, she has various incarnations, she is most desirable, she has hundreds of powerful arms, she has great arms, she is adorned in serpents as ornaments, she resides in the Shatchakra, she penetrates through the Shatchakra, she has the complexion of dark clouds, she symbolizes body, she has incorporeal as well as bodily appearance too, she is supreme Goddess, she has lovely face, she is forebearing, she is Moolaprakrithi, she is Eshvari who has no birth/ Aja, she has fair complexion, she is the provider of Purusharththa/Dharma, Arththa, Kama and Moksha, she is the preceptor of the Universe who imparts the knowledge of Bhramam, she has the complexion of blood red, blue, dark clouds, black, yellow etc.. she is too compassionate, she represents desire, thirst, greed, age, wise, joyful, elderly, youthful, merciful, rythym, art forms, measure of time, auspicious hours, seconds, era, etc.. she has the complexion of precious yellow metal, she symbolizes sense organs, eyes, skin, touch, air, sentiment, aroma etc.. she is fond of rich fragrances, she is smeared in highly fragrant musk, she is soft and tender, she resides in the intellect, she has navel and eyes resembles to the antelope, she takes immense pleasure in the fragrance of camphor, she represent Padmayoni, Kosha/cells, Linga, wealth and prosperity, she is adorned in various precious ornaments, she symbolizes Yonimudra, she is Durga who is all pervading, she resides in the heven, she takes immense delight in the consumption of nectar, she is Madhavi who is adorned in various fresh alluring flower garlands, she is soaked in the consumption of nectar, she is enthusiastic, she is Mathangi, she holds parrot in her hands, she is extremely valorous, she is Mahashvetha, she is fond of Vasu, she has attractive complexion, she holds lotus flower, she is adorned in pearl decorated ornaments, she takes immense delight in the scent of camphor, she is Padmini who holds lotus flower and adorned in lotus flower garlands, she is supreme Goddess Shakthi who is wielded in Khadga, she has powerful hands, she is wielded in Bhushundi, Chapa, Shoola, Bana, Shakthi and various powerful weapons, she has peacock as celestial vehicle, she showers abundance of boons, she has embodied as Earth, she is valorous, she has powerful arm wielded in vicious weapons, she is the source of wealth and prosperity, she symbolizes success, she is the protector, she symbolizes triumph, she is ShivA who symbolizes auspiciousness,  and wealth, she is Bhagavathi who has personified as Mahalakshmi, she is highly honorable, she is extremely skilled warrior, she resides in the woods of Mandhara, she is youthful, she is Kali who holds Kapala, she has personified as Kapila and Krishna as well.
