Vidura Neethi – Sri Mahabharath - Chapter
2
Chapter – 7 - The conversation between Vidura and King
Dhritarashtra 1 -20
Dhritarashtra speaks “Oh! Thatha, I have
completely worn out of anxiousness and sleepless, I have lost peace, kindly
advice me. Oh! Child, you have profound knowledge in Dharmashasthra, you have
deep knowledge in the subjects of Dharma and Artha, and you are sinless. Oh!
Vidura, kindly advice me which is fruitful to Yudhishtira, and promising to all
of us, I am worried of the forthcoming destruction of the clan, I am mentally
exhausted with the countless sinful deeds of Kaurava. Oh! Prominent one, kindly
advises me about the future course of action of Yudhishtira.”
Vidura speaks “Oh! Rajana, I shall
consider it is my responsibility to speak frankly and guide you properly,
whether you would like to hear it or not. It may be auspicious or inauspicious,
or it may be favorable or unfavorable, but I consider as it is my duty to reveal
the same. I shall speak a few of the most promising things that are advisable,
and should follow by the Kurus at this crucial moment, listen to me carefully.
Oh! Bharatharshabha, do not fall for the fruits earned by improper means. Oh! Rajan, an intelligent person will not
grieve over his failure or get disappointed, even though it was performed in a
meticulous and proper manner, because an intelligent will foresee all the sides/positive
and negative sides before the performance of a deed, and they do not perform
deeds in a hurry without proper assessment. Oh! Rajan, it is advisable to perform any deed
after learning all sides of it, after the thorough assessment of the capacity
of the performer, and the nature of the deed, etc. Oh! Rajan, a wise ruler should
have a thorough knowledge of the current status of the Kingdom, its growth or
destruction, the wealth of the Kingdom, people’s choice, methods of punishments, etc.
otherwise, a King cannot rule his Kingdom wisely, hence the ruler who is completely
aware of the status of the Kingdom would protect the Kingdom and its people. Oh! Rajan, the person who has no control over
sense/Shabdha, Sparsha, Rasa, Gandha, undergoes constant afflictions like the
evil effects caused by the movements of the planets, the person who is soaked
in material matters and bondage, have no control over sense would undergo
endless trouble like the Chandra during the waning period. The powerful ruler
will have perfect control over his enemies; the king who has perfect control over
sense could easily control his warriors and Praja as well. Oh! Rajan, a powerful King should have perfect
control over sense, great control over his army of men, capable to impose
punishments upon the culprits, performs any deed after thorough study, and have
great endurance would achieve success. Oh! Rajan, the human body is a chariot,
Athman is the Sarathi/charioteer, and the sense organs are the horses which are
the source of the movement of the chariot. The enthusiastic and careful traveler,
who travels with the high breed and well-tamed horses, achieves success in the
journey. If the Jeeva is not cautious and has no control over sense, would lead
to permanent destruction, Oh! Rajan, it is impossible to conduct a journey
without excellent charioteer and well-tamed horses. The Jeeva drenched in material welfare and
bondage would consider important aspects as silly and vice versa remains under
the false perception, consider grief as happiness. The Jeeva who is soaked in
material welfare and bondage, and no control over sense, would completely ignore
Dharma and Arththa, eventually lose wealth, respect, fame, wife, and possessions.”
