Viveka Choodamani – Sri Shankaracharya Virachitham – The Shivakara/auspicious and Shavakara/inauspicious nature of Athman and the body

Chapter – 40 – Viveka Choodamani  - 391 – 400

Preceptor speaks “ The supreme Bhramam is Advaitha/has no dualities, and it is the eternal truth as well. Shruthi eulogizes that supreme Paramathma Parambhramam as eternal truth and all-pervasive. Mahathma /noble souls contemplate upon that supreme Bhramam as vast sky, that has no specific appearance or color, Akhanda/indestructible, Nishchala/free from changes, Nirvikalpa/beyond perception, Nirmala/pure. Shruthi affirms the Universe is the essence of supreme Bhramam, it is Advatheeya, the Jeeva is that Bhramam, hence the Bhramajjani’s take pleasure in the ‘Aham Bhramamsmi’, getting rid of all those worldly matters and bondage. They constantly contemplate and meditate upon that supreme Bhramam, and achieves union with the Chaithanyaswaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam. Oh! Mune, abandon the interest in worldly matters and bondage, and impurities such as Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha and Mathscharya, and abandon the pride in the body and I consciousness, and contemplate upon that Anandha Ghanaswaroopa Paramathma Parambhramam, and take pleasure of Bhramanubhoothi. I shall explain the Shavakara and Shivakara of body and the Athman. The body represents ‘Shavakara’/corpse in the absence of Paramathma in it, and while alive it undergoes constant suffering of aging, illnesses, and death, it could give sufferings in all possible manner to yourself and others, hence the body is inauspicious. The Nithya, Sudhdha, Mukthaswaroopa Paramathma resides as soul/Athman is auspicious/Shivakara and eternal bliss, the attachment to the body and material matters causes constant grief and sufferings, therefore abandon interest in the inauspicious body and related matters, and get attached to the Nithya Muktha Anandhaghana Swaroopa Paramathma with the constant contemplation and meditation, and it is Mukthi. The Maya in the Jeeva causes the attachment to Prakrithi/material matters, richness, possession, wealth, fame, money, people, etc. the abandonment of interest in worldly matters and bondage would make the Jeeva perceive that Adhvatheeya, Poornna Pramathma who is sole witness, free from Kriya. Prapancha is Vikalpa/diversity, the illusion causes the mind and intellect to get attached to worldly matters and witnesses infinite Nama and Roopa. The mind and intellect fixed on the Paramathma Parambhrmam, get relieved from redundant thoughts, and the interest in material matters get annulled. Samadhi/meditation is the process of getting rid of Dhrishya/Nama Roopa, and redundant thoughts, and fixing the mind and intellect upon the supreme Bhrmam resides as soul. The Prapancha is Maya/Vikalpa, which cannot be true. The supreme Bhramam is Adhvaitha/no dualities, is Nirvikara, and Nirvishesha, all those Nama Roopa Dhrishya has fleeting nature. Bramham is free from changes, Nirakara/free from emotions, cannot be Dhrishya, Dhrishtya, Dharshana.  The supreme Bhramam is changeless as the vast ocean where all the living and non-living things submerged at the time of deluge in the Kalpantha, it is Poornna/flawless, Yeka/no duality, Nirvikara/changeless, Nirakara/no forms, Nirvishesha/beyond comparison, Bhramam without any attributes or Vikalpa/diversity, manifoldness.”
