Sri Harisharanashtakam by Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics & its meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

|| Shankara ||

I shall meditate upon supreme Lord Shiva, who is sole entity that appears as various forms in our mind such as Goddess Shakthi, Lord Ganesha, deities and Lord Surya who causes day and night.  Therefore I shall surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Shankapani who carries conch in his hand.  Oh! Shankapane, I have no brothers/sodhara, or father/Janaka, or Janani/mother, or Jaya/wife, or son/athmaja, or kulam/family or valor/vipulabalam, and I have definitely not seen any of these as necessary or ready to lend a hand.  Therefore I shall surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Shankapani who carries conch in his hand.  Oh! Shankapane, I have not served my preceptor who imparts the knowledge of Bhramam, or I have not venerated any of the sacred rivers with utmost reverence, I have not worshiped any deities with prescribed rules and regulations.  Therefore I shall surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Shankapani who carries conch in his hand.  Oh! Shankapane, I have been chasing by the wicked thoughts, my body and mind is completely burnt by various illnesses, my very life has been in the hands of others at all times.  Therefore I shall surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Shankapani who carries conch in his hand.   Oh! Shankapane, I have committed various sins which create intense trepidation and pain, you are prominent in cleansing the sins of the wicked people, and therefore I shall surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Shankapani who carries conch in his hand.  Oh! Shankapane, I have been tortured by grief, aging and various illnesses, and I have been taken various repeated birth as Kaka/crow, Shva/carnivore, Sookara/wild boar, and undergone acute distress, consequently I have completely forgot to memorize you.  Therefore I shall surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Shankapani who carries conch in his hand.  Oh! Shankapane, I am a deprived person, completely tainted with various sins, and disgraceful, therefore if you say I am yours atleast for once I shall treat it as supreme heaven.  Therefore I shall surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Shankapani who carries conch in his hand.  Oh! Shankapane, the sacred Vedas, scriptures, Agamas, Ramayana and Puranas strongly pronounce that you are the safest haven.  Therefore I shall surrender at the lotus feet of Lord Shankapani who carries conch in his hand.
