Sri Raghavashtakam by Sri Adishankaracharya – Lyrics & meanings

I shall prostrate before Sri Raghava who has the magnificent charisma of an elephant, born in the superior clan of Raghu, he is the symbol of mercy, he is worshiped by Rishis and Sages, he is venerated by deities, he is the cause of immense delight of Janaki like lotus flower blossoms in the sun light, he is the treasure house of virtues, he is venerated by the son of Vali, he is adored by Hanuman, he has the eyes resembles to lotus flower, he causes trepidation in the demons.  I shall prostrate before Sri Raghava who has the magnificent charisma of an elephant, he is most precious blue pearl which decorate the bosom of Mythili, he has given protection to younger brother of Ravana, he is superior in the Raghu clan, he is my favorite deity, he brings immense delight to the daughter of Medhini  like Lord Surya to lotus flower, he is the cause for the welfare of Surya dynasty. I shall prostrate before Sri Raghava who has the magnificent charisma of an elephant, he is decked in golden ear stud, he has attractive neck, he is the destroyer of enemies, he is decorated with various precious ornaments, his eyes has the beauty of peacock, he is decked in attractive anklets, kausthubham and various onaments, he is the cause for the welfare of Banuvamsha/Surya dynasty. I shall prostrate before Sri Raghava who has the magnificent charisma of an elephant, he enthusiastically explores the land of Dandakavanam, he is the safe haven for deities, Siddhas and Yogis, he protects the virtuous people, he was praised by valorous Vali, he had successfully cut down the snake like hands of Kumbhakarna in war field, he is too affectionate to his younger brother Lakshmana.  I shall prostrate before Sri Raghava who has the magnificent charisma of an elephant, he is decked in fresh alluring flower garlands made of Kethaki, Karaveera and Jathi, he is Sridhara who adorned Lakshmi on his chest and eventually it turned out the color of vermilion from the bosom of Mythilathmaja/daughter of Mithila, he is the Lord of Lords, he is attractive and Lord of the Universe/Jagathpathi, he is the safe haven of his passionate devotees. I shall prostrate before Sri Raghava who has the magnificent charisma of an elephant, he is worshiped through Yaga, Dhana, Samadhi Yoga, Japa,  recital of Veda and various devout act by the intellectuals, he is the slayer of the demon Thadaka and valiant Vali who is the Lord of Angadha, he is most pleasing to ancestors.  I shall prostrate before Sri Raghava who has the magnificent charisma of an elephant, he destroyed the demon Khara and Dhooshana, and various demons effortlessly, he is Lord Achyutha who beheaded Ravana, he is surrounded by millions of monkey warriors, he is Lord Hari who is the protector of the Universe, he works for the welfare of the deities.   I shall prostrate before Sri Raghava who has the magnificent charisma of an elephant, who is prominent in the usage of Asthra and Shasthra which was taught by Sage Kaushikha/Vishwamithra, he has attractive smile, he is dearest to all the people in the Universe, he is the slayer of demon Ravana who is the enemy of Vasavadhi/Lord Indra and Suraris/deities, ultimately provided salvation to him, he has the complexion of dark clouds. 

The glorious verses of Raghavashtakam provides the abode of Lord Achyutha, it also provides Bukthi/fulfillment of desires, and Mukthi/liberty from the repeated births, Wealth/Dhanam, Dhanyam/abundance of grains, and virtuous offspring.  Whoever recites or listens to the above mentioned splendid verses with utmost faith and devotion, and completely surrendered at the lotus feet of Lord Ramachandra would be blessed with his merciful grace.



I shall prostrate before the supreme Lord Rama ! Victory to Lord Ramabadhra ! I shall prostrate before the supreme Lord Rama !  Victory to Lord Raghava ! I shall prostrate before the Lord of Lords! Victory to Lord Devaraja ! I shall prostrate before Lord Vasudeva ! Victory to Lord Veeraraja !



My humble salutation to supreme Lord Rama who is a precious gem in the lake of Agamas/Veda and sacred scriptures, he is always most desired precious gem in the minds of virtuous people, he is a precious gem symbolizes virtues, he is a precious gem that has the resemblance to Janaki/daughter of Janaka, it is the precious gem that encircles and carries the whole Universe, it is the precious gem that easily attainable for all and it is the most beloved gem of Mythili.
