Sri Mahakala Sahasranama Sthothram – Sri Prakrishtanandhokthagama - Lyrics and meanings 1 – 10

Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12 Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable through the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.


Rishi speaks “ Oh! Suvratha/illustrious student, carefully listen to the glorious verses of thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahakala, that was described to a devoted disciple.”


Sutha speaks “There was an illustrious Bhramin Sudhama who was extremely devoted and righteous attending tutelage with Krishna/Gopipathi who is the Lord of cowherds of Vraja, under the guidance of Maharishi Sandheepani in Avanthika, they were together attending lessons on 64 art forms and various subjects in sixty four days living in the hermitage of Maharishi Sandheepani.”


Sudhama speaks “ Oh! Krishna,  Oh! Sathvathampathe/supreme Lord who has sathvik disposition, kindly narrates to me about the sacred hymns which are appropriate for the veneration of Lord Mahakala with the sacred bale/bilva.”


Sri Krishna replied “ Oh! Mithra/closest associate, Oh! Mahaprajja/wise, I shall narrate to you the glorious thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahakala who is Kalakala/death of Lord Yama, it is highly confidential, it was always recited by the Bhramins with high reverence and devotion, and veneration of Lord Mahakala with the bale leaves would provide immense bliss, it was recited  by thousands of Rishis and Sages strictly following to its metre/Chandass, which was predetermined for the recitation of sacred names of Lord Mahakala, along with the meditation upon Lord Mahakala who is supreme Lord all pervading.

||Hari Om || Sri Mahakala Sahasranama sthothra is highly propitious was composed by Lord Krishna as its Rishi,  it has Anushtup as its meter,  it eulogizes the glories of Lord Mahakala who is supreme Lord/Paramathma, these thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahakala is recited to please him.


I shall always meditate upon supreme Lord Mahakala who is smeared in Kumkum/vermilion, Agaru/fragrant agarwood, and Kasthoori/rich fragrant musk, he is decked in various fresh alluring flowers of rich fragrances, he is decked in bale leaves on matted hair locks, Lord Nandi is seated in front of him and Goddess Sri Parvathi/Girirajakumari /daughter of Mount Himavan on his left, he is always surrounded by numerous Bhramins.
