Sri Shiva Sthothram - I – Lyrics and Meanings

|| Jai Sriman Narayana ||

|| Shankara ||

I shall meditate upon Lord Shambhu who is the consort of Goddess Sri Uma/Umapathi, he is the preceptor of the deities/Suraguru, he is the cause of the Universe/Jagathkaranam, I shall meditate upon Lord Shiva who is decked in venomous serpents as ornaments/Pannagabhooshanam, he is attired in elephant skin/Mrigadharam, I shall meditate upon Lord Pashupathi/who is the protector of animals, he has soorya, chandhra and agni as eyes, he is most desirable to Lord Mukunda/Mukundapriyam, he is the safe haven for the virtuous people and provider of abundance of boon, he is Shankara/symbol of auspiciousness. Oh! Maheshwara, I have no safe haven other than you, therefore kindly protect me with all those compassion,  I shall meditate upon Lord Mahadeva  who is the consort of Goddess Sri Uma, father of Lord Subramanya and preceptor of all the deities.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Rudra who won over Lord Yama/Mruthyunjaya, he has bluish throat/Neelakanda, he is omnipresent, and he is the elixir of nectar/Amrithesha.

I shall meditate upon Lord Mruthyunjaya, who is seated on the magnificent gem studded throne under the Kalpavriksha in Mount Kailash, he has the brilliance of camphor and crystal, and luster of moon, he is venerated by Goddess Sri Karthyayani, he has attractive matted hair locks which carries the powerful water current of sacred Ganga, he is the ocean of mercy, he is decked in King of serpents/Vasuki as ornament around his neck, he is the kala of Lord Yama.   I shall meditate upon Lord Mruthyunjaya, who is decorated in sacred ashes and Rudraksha all over his body, he carries deer, trident and Rudraksha, he crushed the pride of Lord Yama with a boisterous voice ’Hum’,  he is decked in venomous serpents, crescent moon and river Ganga, he is the provider of abundance of boons to his ardent devotees,  he is the destroyer of enemies and all the illnesses, he is surrounded by the Bhoothaganas, spirits, Pishachas and serpents.

I shall meditate upon Lord Neelakanda who has bluish throat due to the presence of dreadful toxin, he has five faces, he has the luster of moon and glacier, he is Gaurivallabha/darling of Goddess Gauri, he is decked in venomous serpents as ornaments.  I shall meditate upon Lord Chidambara who is the ocean of mercy/Kripasamudhram,  he is charismatic, he has three eyes, he has attractive matted hair locks, he has Goddess Sri Parvathi on his left side, he is Sadashiva and Rudra as well,  he is eternal.  Oh! Shivashankara, while the emisseries of Lord Yama torture me with cruel words and imposes severe punishments during my death bed, Oh! Kalakala, Oh! Bhagavan, I shall earnestly pray to reside in my heart along with Goddess Sri Parvathi, and protect me from those hellish tortures.  Oh! Gaurivallabha, who is Kamari/slayer of Lord Kamadeva, he has gracefully swallowed the deadly toxin, slayer of demons of Thripura and Lord Yama, I shall earnestly pray to protect us from the world of Samsara.

Oh! Shambho who is the consort of Goddess Sri Parvathi, dwells as soul/Prana in all living beings, human body represents your sanctum, all those actions and reactions are equivalent to your worship, sleep is considered as Samadhi, places I walks around with my legs are Pradhakshina/my humble prostration before you, each and every words I utter would be your sacred hymns, ultimately all my actions are my humble offering to you. Oh! Shambho I shall earnestly pray to kindly bless us with effortless death and graceful living, foremost of all bless us with firm devotion at your lotus feet.  Oh! Neelakanda, I shall earnestly pray to provide us an opportunity to recite your glorious myths, eulogize your splendor and veneration of your lotus feet in all our births.  I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Shiva, who is omnipresent, he is the symbol of auspiciousness, he dwells as soul in all the living beings, ultimately liberates from the repeated births.  I shall prostrate before Lord Shiva along with Goddess Sri Parvathi, who is eternal bliss.  Oh! Nandhikesha Oh! Mahabhaga, who imparts the supreme knowledge and belief in Lord Shiva, I shall request you to grant us permission to serve Gaurishankara persistently.
