Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is
sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12
Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred
names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate
Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord
Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable through
the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.
I shall prostrate before supreme Lord
Mahadeva who is personified as Mahakala, he represents six ill conduct such as lust, anger, greed, delusion,
pride and jealousy, he dwells in
Shadchakra/Mooladharam, Swadhishtanam, Manipoorakam, Anahatham, Vishuddhi, and Agneya he penetrates through the Shadchakra,
he is Shadanana who has six faces, he represents Shadanga/ six limbs such
as proportion, expression, Aesthetic scheme, similarity, Color scheme,
and Shadrasa/six tastes/sweet, sour,
salt, pungent, bitter and astringent, he is Hara and Hadakeshvara as well, he
is supreme ascetic, he has the luster of precious yellow metal, he is Herambha,
he symbolizes fire sacrifices, he graciously accepts oblation from fire
sacrifices, he assumed the form of Haya/horse, he symbolizes prosperity, he is
attired in the skin of elephant, he had provided abundance of boons to Haha
Huhu/celestial Gandharva, he is Hadakesha who is fond of oblation form the fire
sacrifices, he symbolizes oblations as well as fire sacrifices and the
offerings of grains in the fire sacrifices, he is Hiranyaretha who symbolizes
virility, he is Hadakeshvara who has the luster of precious yellow metal, he is
graceful, he is the Lord of Hanumath, he is Hara who it eternal bliss, he is
Hara who symbolizes Siddhi/cure, prosperity, intellect, prosperity and skill,
he represents glacier, Mount Himalaya, celestial Gandharva Haha and Huhu, he is
the cause for the origin of Universe and its living beings, he is powerful and
provider of wealth, he symbolizes sacred shrine, he is the principle deity in
the shrine, he symbolizes prosperity and well – being, he provides prosperity
and happiness to his worshiper, he symbolizes forbearance and augments
endurance level of his worshiper, he
represents milky ocean, he graciously accepts milk as a part of oblation, he
gets easily pleased, he is the Lord of the Universe and its living beings, he
is fond of honey and milk, he get easily pleased to worshiper and provides
various Siddhis, he symbolizes supreme intellect, he is the provider of wisdom
and intelligence, he is wise and provider of knowledge, he is unborn, he is
eternal, he remains invisible, he is primordial, he is the provider of bliss,
he dwells as soul in living beings, he absorbs the Universe and its living
beings at the end of Kalpa,he is unconquerable, he is the leader of the
Universe and its living beings, he is Athmabhu/self manifested, he is
primordial, he is distant and devoid of illnesses, he is
uncommon/supernatural/devoid of worldly bondage, he is extraordinarily
beautiful, he is omnipresent, he symbolizes knowledge of self, he is watchful,
he is Athmasakshi/dwells as Athman and thoroughly witness all the actions, he
is Anandhi/he has no beginning or end, he dwells as Antharathma/soul.
