Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12 Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable through the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.



I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Mahadeva who is personified as Mahakala, he resides on the river banks of sacred river Gauthami, he is beloved of Gopathi/Lord Krishna, he has brownish black colored complexion, he represents Gokarnna and Gopathi, he is magnificent, he is  valorous /Gajari/lion,  he is beloved of Garuda/King of birds, he is decked in sacred Ganga on matted hair locks, he symbolizes virtues, he is charismatic, he represents wisdom and knowledge, he is supreme Preceptor, he is worshiped by elephants, he is Gopala, he is beloved of sacred river Gomathi/tributary of Ganga, he is the provider of virtues and works for the welfare of living beings, he is Ganesha who is the remover of obstacles, he is worshiped by Ganas, he represents Gana, he is highly respectable, he embodied as celestial bull, he is worshiped by celestial Apsaras and Gandharvas, he protects cattle and pregnant women, he represent human body and provider of house/ body, he meditates upon sacred scriptures of Gita, he is Lord of sacred Gaya, he is the Lord of cows, he represents excellence in speech and virtues, he is Lord of sacred river Ganga, he is Lord of mystical powers, he symbolizes planets and milky way, he is the Lord of planets, he is approachable for the virtuous people,  he eradicates all the evil effects caused by the changes in the planetary positions, he is Ghaneshvara and he represents solid forms, he is Ghushmesha who symbolizes divine sounds, he represents foremost among mass, he is decked in bells, he is Ghadadheesha, he destroys the most incurables like epilepsy/illusion, he is Ghushmesha who represents the cries of victory, he represents boisterous noises, he fond of offering of ghee, he is excellent smeared in ghee, he represents Ghatothkacha, he had offered various boons to Ghatothkacha, he is Ghadeshvara who represents Gadajanma /originated from the moat, he represents the sacred syllables of Gakara, he represents Charachara/movable as well as immovable, he is Chithanandha/eternal bliss and Chinmaya/pure, he is Chandrashekhara who is decked in crescent moon on matted hair locks, he is Chamaresha who is embellished with Chamara, he is the Lord of Charachara/movable as well as immovable, he is supreme Lord.
