Sri Mahakala Sahasranama is
sacred verses praising the glories of Lord Mahakaleshvara, one of the 12
Jyothirlinga Kshethra located in Avanthi/Ujjain, these thousands of sacred
names of Lord Mahalakala was narrated by Lord Krishna to his closest associate
Sudhama while they were under the tutelage of Maharishi Sandheepani, and Lord
Krishna concludes with the abundance of the meritorious rewards attainable
through the recitation of Sri Mahakala Sahasranama.
I shall prostrate before supreme Lord Mahadeva who personified as Mahakala/fierce and he has colossal form, he is the Lord of Universe, he symbolizes wisdom and knowledge, he is Mahashambu who is the provider of happiness and welfare, he is Mahesha who destroys worldly bondage and excessive desires of the worshiper, he is highly revered and he is the destroyer of Manmatha/Lord Kamadeva, he is attractive and he destroys untimely death, he is worshiped by Madhava/Krishna, he is the provider of liberation from repeated births, he symbolizes salvation, he eradicates accidental and untimely death, he represents time, he is worshiped by Rishis and sages, he has assumed the form of Manu and superior to Manu, he destroyed Manmatha, he is wise, he is eternal bliss, he is selfless, he is Lord of Rishis and Sages, he is supreme ascetic who uphold asceticism, he is prominent, he is the commander of the Universe, he symbolizes Mount Mainaka and he is worshiped by Mainaka, he is the dearest darling of Madhvari, he is the Lord of Mahalaya/great universal spirit, he symbolizes salvation, he is the Lord of Meghanatha, he is Mukthishvara who is the provider of liberation to souls, he is Mahamuktha/dispassionate/liberated, he has profound knowledge in sacred hymns, he symbolizes sacred texts and auspiciousness, he is the provider of auspiciousness to worshiper, he is the Lord of Madhyadhesha/mid land and he is illustrious, he is highly enthusiastic, he symbolize Manmatha, he is Mathanga who represents mountaineer, he is the Lord of Malathi, he is the Lord of the Mathura, he dwells in Mathura, he is Malavadheesha who is fierce some, he is Mrida who represents Maruthi, ascetic, Markanda, and zone, he is fond of nectar, he takes ablution in nectar, he is fond of luscious meal, he has the luster of lotus, he is charming, he is powerful, he symbolizes joy and he is the provider of happiness, he is the provider of salvation, he symbolize repudiation, he is decked in pearl garlands, he represents Mrikanda/surya, he symbolizes Yajja/fire sacrifices, he is the Lord of Yajja, he is Yajjesha, he destroyed the Yajja of Dhakshaprajapathi, he has the effulgence of fire sacrifice, he symbolizes fame, he is supreme ascetic/Yogi, he is the Lord of Yoga who provides aspiration in Yoga.
